What is the second-best budget bourbon behind Old Grand-Dad 114 and its girthy BWC?
Grand Dad?
What would be a good American whisky to take to Europe and share with a friend over there? I was going to take Woodford double oaked since I've been wanting to try it myself, but it might already be available there.
>finally get rid of the drunks by removing alcohol general>"hurr durr we can get around it by making it specific alcoholz"
>>21082837>the second-best budget bourbon behind Old Grand-Dad 114Wild Turkey 101
>>21083200That is definitely there. Are you both used to drinking Whiskey?
>>21083200Oddly enough there is some bourbon in Europe that can be difficult to find in the US just due to the lack of interest to most European consumers. That said if you can find a nice Sagamore rye that would probably be harder to find in europe. Especially if you can get a cask finished series or their new 9 year rye.
Stagg jr > EH Taylor Single Barrel > Eagle Rare > Weller Antique > Blantons
>>21083250This is the correct answer.
Is elijah craig small batch supposed to be good bourbon? Its smooth and tastes nice but in my novice tongue its just kind of bland. Am i crazy?
>>21083686It's like $30/bottle, the fact it's not off putting should be enough. If you want depth of flavor and complexity, you're spending $45-60+.
>>21083702Lately my favorite has been yellowstone select and i can get that $30 a bottle
>>21083707That's great, but that's VERY one note as well, just a different note.
>Drink 100+ proof bottles exclusively for a while>Try something 90 proof againMan, you can really tell the difference, in a bad way. Almost feels pointless to drink it.
>>21083702Nah.Any high-rye bourbon is not going to be one-note.
>>21083686It's a good mid shelf bourbon. Their rye is better but hard to find
>>21083686Their old stuff was amazingThen they started making cask strength editions, so the normal stuff got diluted and the great stuff (cask strength) is expensive
Is bulleit good?
>>21084004>the great stuff (cask strength) is expensiveI mean, compared to the rest of the bourbon market, Elijah Craig is at least widely available and usually doesn't go over MSRP.Batch proofs are $65-75Single barrels are $75-85Which for 8-12 year old cask strength bourbon isn't bad at all.
>>21084009Fair pointI'm outside the US, so prices are probably higher here.My biggest problem with them is that the old stuff was easier to get than their new cask strength is now
>>21084007fuck off Diageoshill
>>21084017Well, being in the US, and an area that buys a lot of Elijah Craig, I guess I'm just spoiled for choice.I can walk into any liquor store in my area and walk out with an Elijah Craig batch proof or single barrel at MSRP.They might not have multiple single barrel choices, or multiple batch proof choices, but I can basically always find a batch proof release, or a single barrel release.
>>21084041I can walk into multiple liquor stores and buy that and Old Forester and RR single barrels as well as overrated shit like blantons and eh taylor small batches at MSRP. God is a California fan
Is this a good rye for 30€?
>>21084125Yes.
>>21084113>buy that and Old Forester and RR single barrels as well as overrated shit like blantons and eh taylor small batches at MSRPSame here, though the blantons and EH Taylor would likely require me to wait 10-15 minutes on the allocated release day for that month. But still readily available within 10 minutes of my house at MSRP once per month. The others are on the shelf at MSRP any day of the week.
How do you buy BTAC and Pappy at MSRP?
>>21084520For me the local government controls all liquor sales and any profits get reinvested into the liquor board, prices are required to be set at MSRP, to make things fair, rare bottles get announced in advance, how many will be at which stores, and you can choose to go wait in line (or participate in a lottery drawing) or not.I've had Stagg, pappy 12 & 15, and eagle rare 17 just in the last 2 years all at MSRP.
Can you taterfags stop buying my favorite tequila? I hate the fact that it's easier to get most buffalo trace products than Fortaleza
>>21084565>FortalezaAllocated release in my area
>>21084565
>>21082897Bonded 100 though, not regular OGD.
>>21084559>Camp or lotto grimI love me a good bourbon but this is just too silly. I'll be sticking with other liquors and snagging rare bourbon when the opportunity shows up but there's no way I'll be camping with gear overnight.
>>21084660Ive never waited in line longer than 45 minutes, and that was for Stagg. Usually I'm waiting 10-20 minutes at most and still able to get what I want.
>>21084660try living in a state (MI) where lottos are illegal so your choices are museums with obscene markups, be a "Grand Reserve" Total Wine Member, get insanely lucky, or have an in with someone who has connections. I don't know if stores here even get tier-1 stuff like Pappy/KoK, though I know places like TW get the more standard BTAC stuff.
>>21084660what kind of flyover town do you live in to camp overnight? I literally can get stagg by the end of the day because our state gets a quite a bit of "allocated" bourbons every month
>>21083713Yeah, 90 proof is great during spring or summer though.

this thread does not need a general. it's only the same 4-5 posting and samefagging.
>>21085089hey now, sometimes it's a scotchfag thread and sometimes it's a bourbonfag thread, it's not ALWAYS the same
Euros please slap yuuuge tarrifs on our bourbons. We barely have enough at home so this could shift more supplies to domestic market.
>>21085213More expensive bourbon for more expensive scotch was the dumbest trade deal in history, lets get Wild Turkey 101 under $25 dollars again.
>>21085280>lets get Wild Turkey 101 under $25 dollars againat $25 for 750ml you're at ~30ml per dollar. The 750ml is $28.99 in my area, (about 26ml per dollar) and that tracks with inflation from 2020. $25 in 2020 is ~$30 today. But in any case, my local store has WT 101 for $47 for a 1.75L, or 37ml per dollar, which is better than even the 750ml at $25.inflation is a bitch though, I wouldn't expect to see $25 unless it goes on sale.
>>21085293I'm in Georgia and after tax a 750ml of 101 costs 32 bux. Insane.
>>21085297Not insane at all.Again, with inflation over the last 5 years, the fact you're ONLY paying $32 is honestly a pretty decent deal.
Once again, what are some bourbons that taste like makers mark lost recipe and eagle rare? basically SWEET and some body. higher proof is better
>>21085380Double Eagle Very Rare
>>21085380Your taste in bourbon is that of a woman or faggot.
>>21085451Not him but sweet is good. If you don't like sweet I don't know why you'd even drink bourbon.
>>21085380Maybe Wilderness trail Wheater for the Makers Mark.Idk, but it's a good one.Just try to get something that is barrel proof.
>>21085472Not referring to the sweet part as much as the wheated and low-rye part.
>>21085568So what? Why don't you just drink rye then? Are you a woman?
>>21085570I do drink rye.
>>21085575If you like anything weaker then that means you're a bitch, sorry. Maybe go get a martini next time.
>>21085579Rye>bourbonI'm not arguing with you.
Thoughts on old forester single barrel rye for 89?
>>21085941>Since the release of Old Forester Rye in 2019, fans of the brand have been clamoring to try it at barrel strength, and weʼre excited to deliver. For the first time in the brandʼs 150 year history, Old Forester is elated to present this new expression, unfiltered, as a single barrel at barrel strength.Sounds like it's not even any older or anything than the standard ~$25 rye (which I adore). Sounds like it's literally the same whiskey only from a single barrel and at cask strength.Kinda ridiculous price for that, and again, I absolutely adore their standard rye.
getting a bottle of morrison's mac-talla mara next week, heard nothing but good things about it
>>21086161If you're actually drinking and enjoying your bourbon, you're not a tater, even if you're chasing the "trendy" bottles. Taters just want big collections so they can flex on social media with how many bottles of Pappy they have.
Today's haul:Baker's 7 Single BarrelJim Beam Single Barrel 108 proofNelson Brothers ReserveOld Ezra 7 Barrel Strength
I tried Johnnie Walker Black Label for the first time last night. I thought it tasted chocolatey so I ate some M&Ms then took a sip. It was incredible! Such harmony from the two. I plan on trying this again, but with peanut M&Ms(hopefully the salt enhances this experience even more).
>>21086901A bold and original combination
>>21086869Yum
>>21086901Chocolate makes most whisk(e)y taste very good if you eat it before sipping. It's probably the single most reliable pairing with whisk(e)y. Has nothing to do with the specific whisky you had.
>>21086901as the other anon said, that's just a classic standard whiskey pairing.
>>21086949>Has nothing to do with the specific whisky you had.Really? When I've had Chivas Regal I didn't pick up an chocolate notes, but I did taste something more fruity on the citrus end. I haven't tried Chivas with chocolate, but from my instinct I don't think it would pair as well as Johnnie Walker Black Label
>>21086869>Baker's 7 Single BarrelWhen I did a flight at the Beam distillery, this was pretty much tied with the Knob Creek 9 year and I ended up getting a bottle of the latter, but I need to grab one of these too because I really liked it.Has anyone had any of the Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proofs (either the whiskey or rye)? I keep hearing how good they are
Where do you sell and trade bourbons?
>>21087419I don't, but people do that crap on Facebook. You're likely to buy a fake bottle btw.
>>21087419As the other anon said, facebook, there are also some discord groups that might have some of that too.
>>21086161Finding these bottles isn't terribly hard, but I'm not paying 2.5x MSRP for them. Shame too cause I'd like to try them. Blanton's is $150 at my local liquor store, fucking insane. Oh well
>>21087683Eagle Rare is $80 at one of mine, lol (they also had Weller Antique 107 for $124, which was weirdly less offensive). Another has a bottle of Stagg for $600
>>21087683NTA, but i've managed to buy most of these within the last 12 months at MSRP from my local stores.I've drunk them all though, I don't collect.
How do I find an alcoholic gf to support my vice?
>>21087693Yeah pretty much impossible around me to find any of these at MSRP. Closest thing would be Buffalo Trace at around $30. I remember seeing Eagle Rare for like $37 dollars in 2019 and now it's $75 minimum.
>>21087917I just bought a bottle last month for $38.Eagle rare and Blantons are the two my local stores have basically EVERY month, at least a dozen bottles per store, at MSRP.

Sipping on Port Charlotte 10 I can see why peeps prefer this over Laphroaig 10 but I still think 10 cask is more interesting and unique than this. About the same price too.
>>21087163>but from my instinct I don't think it would pair as well as Johnnie Walker Black LabelIt will.In fact, most whiskies will pair better than with that one because that one is a bad whisky.
>>21088146That's just like your opinion man
>buying whiskey less than 100 proofnever
Got a new Russell's reserve private selection from a very good local liquor store and it's the best one I've had out of the 5 I own.
buddy sent me this from Ohio over the break. I like it a lot

This was pretty good, especially for how cheap it is. Would be nice if I could find the cask strength version.

>>21088919Sorry for your loss anon, I'll raise a glass to him
>>21089009Thanks, i'll be finishing off the bottle of Willett to remember him, as we opened up for his birthday back in August.
>>21089015I'm jealous, Willett is basically unobtainium here aside from the odd super marked-up 4 year rye
>>21088919My condolences, never nice however good an innings they had
>>21089118>aside from the odd super marked-up 4 year ryeI bought a bottle of this today since I saw it on sale, hopefully it's good.
>>21089151NTA, but the 4 year rye is regularly on the shelf at MSRP around me so I've had it a few times and it's enjoyable, if a slightly different rye than a normal rye.
>>21089153Yeah I've heard it's a little unusual so that's why I want to find one. Unfortunately, the only one I've seen was $99 and lmao no thanks
>>21089161Yea fuck that, my locals all have it in stock and it's $78 which is the new MSRP. It WAS $65 until a few months ago. But Willett increased their MSRPs again. It's expensive for a 4 year rye, but as you noted, it is a bit unique and just has something to it that I like enough to go back for.
>>21089164I was able to get it at $60 (>>21089151)
>>21089166Yeah that's a good price and i would happily pick it up on sale at that price. As it is at $78 i'd only buy it once every 4-5 months probably.
>>21089164Shit, if $78 really is the new MSRP then maybe $99 isn't ridiculous if I don't see it anywhere else. Even at MSRP though that's not something I'm going to buy regularly unless it blows me away. For that I could probably get an Elijah Craig barrel pick or something that's a better value.
just tried stagg jr and yeah i'm def never going under 100 proof again. i'm just going to give my blantons and weller pours to my guests
>>21086161>buffalo trace x 13this is why
>>21088919RIP, I hope he got to enjoy those whiskeys with you.
>>21090449We did get a chance to sip all 4 before he passed. He's the one who got me into whiskey as he always had a single malt scotch collection while I was growing up and anytime I visited for the holidays he'd offer me a taste of some of them. So I've been drinking his whiskey for 25+ years and i guess he left me a few bottles to finish off for him.
>>21088128If you ever get the chance, try the octomore
>>21091085I never had an Octomore but from the reviews I watched they seem rather hit or miss. Some with absolutely disgusting smoke, other where it's really well balanced and integrated - and that for ridiculous prices.
>>21091201I'd say it's worth trying, it's unique enough that even if you don't LOVE it, it's something new you wont get to try anywhere else.
I only ever buy OGD 100 and Rittenhouse rye because I just make cocktails with whiskey. Is there anything else in their price range that might be worth trying?
>>21091212Old Forester Rye - 100 proof and ~$25.Wild Turkey 101 Rye.
>budget bourbonI bought and tried picrel for the first time last week....was good. It was around 22$ for 1.75L if I recall
>>21091231I hear this used to be better before the recipe changed. It's kinda hard to fuck up bourbon because of the laws which dictate what can be sold as bourbon. Even the cheapest slop is still likely going to taste good, if not a little watery and boring. You have to fuck up pretty spectacularly to make a bourbon that can legally be sold as bourbon and actually tastes bad.
>>21091260spoken like a true alcoholic
>>21091328Haha I'm actually a one dram every two or three days kinda guy. I'm not wrong, though. Even bottom shelf swill like EW black label doesn't taste bad. It's just watery, one-note and boring, but that one note is not a bad flavor.
>>21091334The worst I've had in recent memory was a bottle of Crown Royal that was sitting in my cupboard half empty for 10+ years. People tell me it was bad because it sat open for so long, but I'm not really convinced. I think Crown Royal is just that bad.
>>21091372Crown Royal is a Can*dian whiskey and not bourbon though
>>21091393Ive only had it once and it was probs 8+ years ago but when i tried Makers Mark i was disappointed....it tasted bland and "cheap", if that makes sense
>>21091421Meant for>>21091372
>>21091421Wheated bourbons are blander than normal and high-rye bourbons to begin with, and it's a low-tier wheated bourbon so it's extra bland.
>>21091421That's because it is bland. It's an entry-level bourbon and its sales are mostly thanks to unique packaging that stands out on a shelf
>>21091421If you ever want to try it again get Marker's Mark 46 which is a bit better, or move up to the 101 proof or cask strength bottles.
>>21091498Yeah I haven't had one myself, but I hear the 46 Cask Strength in particular is quite good.
>>21091438Interesting >>21091479Yah like i said it was many years ago and they must have been really pushing the advertising for it at the time because it did seem quite hyped up>>21091498Will do, thanks for the tip :)
>>21091085Yeah it's on my list but local prices on them are rough.
>>21084007Yes it's my favorite bourbon. However I never drink Whiskey neat, I only really sip neat Gin. I'm not 17 anymore chugging a fifth of Jack Daniels and smoking a half of hydro to myself and trying to fight my friends at the skatepark. Bulleit old-fashioneds, Bushmills out the bottle for Mad Sweeney bullshit, Henny or Dussé on ice for feeling hoodrich, Gin for actual serious drinking.
>>21091205Cheapest Octomores by me are the 15.1 and 15.2 for like $200. The rest are over $500. Think either of those are worth pickin up?
>>21092243>However I never drink Whiskey neatWell, thank you for letting us know your opinion is worthless. That was very helpful of you.
>>21092710on principle alone it's not worth. sure its unique, but its gimmicked price(and bottle) is for idiots only.
>>21092827Poser. Try the Glengoyne it mixes very well with doctor pepper. Other than than that the sherry casking will make you puke.
Bastards
>>21092710$200 in the US isn't horrible, i'd pick one up to try personally. Worst case you find out you don't enjoy it and wont buy another.
Today I drank the gay juice for the first time and it tasted better than every single malt I ever had. wat nou?
>>21093384Sherry casking is best casking.
I walked into the liquor store to buy my weekly knob creek and this was in the spot. Only one. Rang it up and it was the same price as just the bottle. Like a little gift from God, now I've got some neat Knob Creek glasses.
>>21093807That's pretty normalLots of companies do releases with a free glass, or pair of glasses. And they're almost always the normal MSRP or a couple of bucks more at most.
>>21093818Ok, but it was cool that it was the last one. After a really bad week it was a cool treat.
>>21093764Hah, gay. I'm glad they called the best rum Gay so nobody else buys it, it's always in stock. Their regular bottle blows out equivalent $20-30 bottles of rum.
>>21093807I have some knob creek double walled glasses I got from a box set a while ago. The logo on the glasses did not survived the years in the dishwasher so they are basically clear now.
>>21094050>putting whiskey glasses in the dishwasher so they can get detergent film on themnopenopeSame with beer glasses.Just rinse with hot water and wipe clean, or wipe with rubbing alcohol (which evaporates very quickly and does not leave behind anything toxic) and wipe dry.Do not apply soap/detergent to whiskey/beer glasses.
>>21094063>has a shitty dishwasherthat sounds like a (you) problem
>>21094063How does it leave a film if I handwash them with detergent, thoroughly rise it all off, and then hand dry them?
for the most part, the free glasses you get in a box are low quality. the knob creek logo on my glasses were supposed to look like frosted glass, but they obviously were not.all you need is some nail polish and a stencil and you can make the same quality glass
>>21092710NTA My area those go for 220 and 260...Finedram has reasonable shipping prices but kinda mediocre prices on Octomores. Still cheaper than buying locally.Cheapest I've seen online for the 15.1 was 130 with 60 dollar shipping, 15.2 for about the same. With 2 bottles shipping was only 80 so next time I order online I'll throw in some Octomores to the order. I want to try 8.3 or whatever their most peated version was.
>>21094050>>21094063I just rinse and wipe with a paper towel. Have for years
>>21094088They also have 12.2 and 13.3 but those are way too expensive for me over $500 each. I might pick up the 15.2 at some point.
>>21094476Yeah those are obscene prices brother.Look at some online stores, reddit swears by this site but I think you can do better if you search around.Im not trying to shill a particular online vendor so do your research.
>>21094503Well shit I didn't realize fine drams had it that much cheaper. I haven't ordered from here yet mainly because of the shipping cost but desu depending on the bottle its definitely a great option compared to the local price gouging. Cheers anon
>>21094328>>21094063this one knows the way>>21094648nta but I'd much rather spend my cash locally but the options pale in comparison to the online shops and the price after shipping is only about $20 per bottle if you ship 3 bottles. more and more the local shops don't even appreciate the business from those who aren't schmoozing the asses of management for the allocated shit.
>>21094688>nta but I'd much rather spend my cash locallyTrust me so would I. I used to purchase bottles frequently prior to the big whiskey boom but I can't justify buying some of these at their current pricing. I will say some of it is not entirely on the shops, some distilleries have changed their direction in the last few years to market to the new crowd of whiskey consumers which is also driving up the cost (i.e., Glendronach)
>>21094725Still five shops on Wine Searcher selling Glendronach 12 for under $50.I will lament the day the price actually goes up but it hasn't yet.
>>21094751Glendronach 18 was my absolute favorite bottle. Used to buy it for $130 and now its about $250 lol. The 12 is still priced well though, but the removal of "non-chill filtered" is questionable. Still natural color at least.
>>21094773>The 12 is still priced wellIt's crazy how low it's priced for the amount of sherry cask flavor it delivers.
>>21083400really buffalo tracepilled huhI will say EH Taylor Single Barrel is a flawless bourbon. Great mouthfeel, rich and fruity, zero offputting flavors, not too high proof'Shame its so expensive
I got a half bottle (375ml) each of JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof Whiskey and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked, want to try each before I commit to a full bottle
>>21083400Is Stagg JR that much better than Blanton's?How about Blanton's Gold?
>>21095050I've given up looking for reasonably priced Blantons Gold or SFTBThey have the name Blantons so they'll never be priced fairly. Plenty of other single barrels that are way cheaper. Russell's Reserve, Knob Creek etc, every major distillerly pretty much
