How to avoid back pain as a tall person working in a commercial kitchen?Former wageslave here. Have done sous, prep, line, expo, dishie, nearly every job there is BOH, sometimes all at once if the owner suckedI got out because it was thankless work that was destroying my back (plus, no benefits kek), making me miserable, and truly sapping the joy from one of the few things I genuinely enjoy in life. I figured it just wasn't worth it. >now a happy home cook with jacked up prep tables and work areas>love cooking again>went back to school on grants>finished an associate's degree>fucked up my calendar and missed the deadline to submit some paperwork for continuing a bachelor's at a more prestigious university that'd accepted me (that's on me)>realized grants allow for TWO YEARS of leeway in case you fail. a lot.>mfw 4.0 gpa (have a feeling that we've seriously watered down at least the first few years of a tertiary education so that dumb zoomers' parents will keep paying. watching them fail even at cheating is insane, the learning curve is fucking flat. some of them are alright, but holy shit we may have completely devalued a graduate degree)>ain't gonna need that leeway, like holy fuck>very happy with/proud of my skills as a chef that i've acquired over the years, but have never considered myself a strong baker>trade school has patisserie program, accepts grant funding>essentially getting paid to learn something that i'm interested in while I wait until next semester>times out perfectly, aww yea>enroll, begin, go trough a whole bunch of food safety stuff that I know like the back of my own dick>finally spend the day actually making stuff once everyone's learned temps and the like>spend maybe 7 hours baking>back pain comes back full fucking force like i've been in the dish pit for 12 straight hours>all i was doing was slightly hunching over to knead, prep, and pipe. What the fuck, man? I was so stoked about this Any tall anons who've hacked it?help
>>21106254You want to get fag butt raped?
For what it's worth, I'm not a giant or anything.Just a little over 6'.Thanks for reading my blog. But seriously, if any tall-ish anons have some advice other than "horse stance" and jacking up the tables there (I will not be able to do that), for the love of all that is holy, pls do share.I'm in so much pain that I would legitimately consider yoga.Drinking an absolutely insane amount of liquor is not an option, unfortunately.
>>21106262Nah. not really.Polite of you to the offer, though.
>>21106266It wasn't a question or an offer
>>21106254OP, I worked in a laboratory. Lab tables raise and lower to save your back. Also, clogs have a heel, for a reason. Saves your back. This is why chefs, doctors, nurses, and lab workers traditionally wore them, not just because you could autoclave an sterilize them. End of day you wear OOFOS. Trust me. Marathon runners end the day in them.I once bought a house from my in laws. SUCKED because pre construction, she had them lower the kitchen counters for her 5'4 height. I couldn't do dishes without a backache. I secretly knew I had to sell the house or remodel the entire thing, from bathrooms to kitchen. Every single house I buy ever since instantly gets a plumber to raise the toilets, and counter tops. Even doorknobs for short people are stupid. Do I drive a short person's car, nope. Do I pay more to fly, or move to the exit row, sure! Just get over it. Your back hurts because of lack of core body strength, or that you're fat, or it's simply done for life and time for a desk job. Be the owner next. I suggest myofascial release massage, then a chiro to reset the muscles.
>>21106266*to offerEdited the original reply and accidentally left that in. >>21106270It had a question mark. Even if rhetorical, why even ask?
>>21106288I'm gonna sex you boy
>>21106281Holy shit custom, even further lowered counters sounds like hell.I'm glad you were able to re-do the place, anon.Actually holy shit congrats on buying more than one house, you're crushing it.I'm well aware that I'll likely never own a home, but that's always been a dream of mine to custom design a sweet ass kitchen for tall people. >re: ur suggestionsI actually have a lot of massage credits (something ridiculous, like 15+ that someone keeps gifting me. I don't go more than twice a year), and was planning on scheduling one soon.I'll take a note about that technique and ask about it, thanks. Going on a post-it, on my wall. The shoes I'll look into, but I'm pretty broke for recovery shoes. I'm already gonna be pretty pained financially just finding nonslips that don't fuck me up further. I threw my old ones out.Chiros sketch me out and idk if my insurance will even cover that, but I'll also be seeing my primary care physician in a couple weeks.I have horrible ADHD and there's a fair chance I would legitimately forget to ask him about it even if in active pain, so thanks again.Once I get adjusted to this new schedule/ all the "new year, new me" folks filter out I am going to work on my core. Not fat, fluctuate from 165-170 and do exercise regularly, I just don't really do anything for my core. Any suggestions?I've heard good things about something called a "hollow body hold" that I can do at home. All constructive suggestions, ty b0ss.
>>21106281>>21106323(once all the "new year, new me" folks filter out, going to work on my core as in going back to the gym routinely)With how early this program starts, I would have to be up at 4:00am to get in a decent gym session, which I am actually excited for because I usually go at 2-3am, it's just gonna take a little while for my circadian rhythm to adjust.
>>21106323whatever a chiro does to adjust you won't hold in place, until you finish some massage first. Wait. But, they have some good machines that do feel great. I only work for good insurance. I'm sure they've invested a couple million in my lifetime. Never go without, k? Always have a to do of Qs for the doctor appointments so you don't forget things. Docs love when you don't waste their time. Be organized like it's a board meeting.I have found the back feels best if you alternate heel height up and down every other day, and have good shock absorption. Those oofos are $100 but patented. All the older researchers and scientists are in clogs.
>>21106254i'm tall and frequently had severe back pains for things like that. some foods were causing my back and joints to hurt, and being low on some nutrients. it's not going to completely make up for everything but i'm able to do a lot more before noticing any pain now. getting more vitamin c in particular has made a big difference.
>>21106254Nothing is designed for tall people, anon. It's really annoying.
>>21106368I know. It's something like <5% of the world population are over 6' tall.It varies country to country, of course. I bet we'd be comfortable in The Netherlands, shiiiet.>>21106345When I go to the doc I have all my quips, qualms, and conundrums listed in a moleskin notebook.I keep a running list of shit in my phone of things to ask them about and I'll refine that onto a notebook page the night before my appointment.Mostly because I'd feel like an asshole scrolling through a phone, but I carry the thing with me for other notes pretty much everywhere anyways.Problem is, I get sidetracked so easily that some stuff doesn't even make it into the phone list.Like I'll think of something important and then get distracted in the time it takes for me to open the app.I have absolutely no idea how I'm able to do well in school, I guess I just absorb and retain information quite easily when it's presented. >>21106364Heard. I bought some vitamins a while ago and forget to take them for months at a time. That's going on a post it note, too.Thank you for the suggestion, that coupled with regular exercise would worst case scenario just be good for me in general. I might draft up a morning schedule or something and really try to stick to it (again). My time management is so shit that I'm always in a massive rush, I really gotta improve upon that.
>5"9'>tallKek
>>21106473That's kind of the point. You'll make it if you're 5'10" and have good posture, but anything past 6' and your posture must be sacrificed for performance. It's like they literally don't even consider that people over 5'9" exist, it sucks.Quick poll: how many anons have slammed their head into a hood vent corner by simply existing in a kitchen?
>>21106323You have back pain as a result of weak and inflexible lower back/hipsCore exercises will help substantially, I’m 6’2 and have lived with the pain until I went down the rabbit hole.Clam locks PlanksSide planksWork on your glute muscles.Lrn2deep squat and use proper lifting technique.Squat university and kneesovertoesguy on YouTube will get you started.
>>21106507I'm 6'4 and did do yoga with me deep release for the hamstrings, hips and lower back pretty religiously for a while. Nothing else helped. It's on YT, check it out.
>>21106507>>21106531Thank you both, I really appreciate it.Bodyweight stuff is awesome.
>>21106540Just keep up the flexibility. I'm actually redoing my kitchen now and am curious what height my cabinets should be now. I'm guessing like 34 inches.
>>21106550Nope, dead wrong there. More like 40.
Gordon said his infertility was caused by the heat of the stove being too close to his balls
>>21106254Have you tried wear a back support or brace? Also congrats on the career change, sounds like you’re doing well and I hope things work out for you.
>>21106472>I bet we'd be comfortable in The Netherlands, shiiiet.I've wished I could visit one of those tall countries just to be able to buy clothes that fit properly lol.
>>21106617the heat of the stove cooks the balls
>>21106254simply order the manlets to do all your work for you, as is your divine right.
>>21106264I'll give you a tip: home kitchens aren't either. Nothing is.
>>21106875One day all the Stacies will get their way and implement Total Manlet Death and the Tall shall inherit the earth.
>>21106264>horse stanceI'm 6'2" and this is how I used to do the dishes when I worked at Chipotle.
>>21106264Squat as much as you can get away with and build up core strength.Crunches, especially weighted ones suck and butterfly kicks are gay but that has helped me a lot with back pain.
>>21107510Woke up early and did like 15-20 minutes of stretching and then did horse stance all day. Still in pain but not nearly as intense. >>21107515Gonna work on building core strength, but at minimum I’ll add some planks and crunches to my morning routine until I’m able to go to the gym in the morning. Thanks m8.>>21106875Yeah it kinda sucks because while we do have “big and tall” sizing here that does not fuckin’ equate to big OR tall.Does jack shit if you aren’t fat as fuck. When I find a pair of pants I genuinely like, I just buy 3-4 pairs, because 30-34 pants are fucking next to impossible to find most places over here (let alone 28-34 or 29-34, those are like unicorns). >>21107508Mane from a genetic perspective that would take thousands and thousands of years to occur through natural selection alone, but I’ll entertain it.Even if that did happen in my lifetime, nobody’s really building new shit. Just hoarding real estate and renting it to whatever sucker will pay top dollar so they can take the L on their many, many empty properties and still profit.Shit’s fucked and my back hurts.A little less than yesterday, though.I still didn’t expect it to suck this bad though lmao, this was supposed to be super fun.If everything goes tits up, maybe I’ll get out the full leg splint I have from a previous injury, buy a cheap wheelchair, and then test just how accommodating they are to those with disabilities.
