It doesn't contain the anti-dessicant chemicals present in cigarettes because it is assumed you will keep it sealed in a bag. Smoking a pipe is a nice quiet meditative skill, you can sit quietly and smoke for an hour and watch the world go by then bop out the dottle and go back to your human business. Taking care of your pipe is its own little ritual, I have some Missouri meerschaum corncobs that are closing in on eight years. Give it a try.
