What are we drinking for Christmas?
>>21796676Good coffee through a blade grinder.
>>21796651>Awake yet?yes :)>How's the coffee?its *ssiiiipp* festive :)and good
do you really need more than cowboy style?
>>21796659:)
Off work until at least Monday, maybe I can actually open this fucking thing that's been sitting on my table for weeks because I've been too tired and busy to fuck with it.
I don't have "espresso" beans. This is what I got. What should I use, the honey processed?
>>21797093you should rest it first
>>21796651best decaf instant coffee?been drinking nestle decaf but it's shit and I'm tired of it
i haven't drink coffee in 3 weeks, the first 3 days were a bit rough but after that i became 100% coffee sober the only noticeable difference is that my teeth look whiter than beforethoughts on my experiment?
>>21797418Report back in 3 months.
merry christmas from australia:)hope everyone has good coffee today
>>21797549Merry christmas. I think I'll make some fantastic espresso and not help the tard.
>>21797091This will be my first expresso, im happy with plunger for now though
>>21797341I buy decaf from aldi. Its in a small jar made in belgium.
>>21797549Merry Christmas. Guess I should get up and make a brew.
>>21797689Why are you replying to me?
>>21796651well this isn't jolly or festive at all
>>21797694okay, I'll check it out
Got some fancy Honduran single source beans and they suck. Thought I would like them because Costa Rican beans are some of my favorite. Had to turn the grind size almost to max and do a 2min bloom + a single pour to make them not come out all bitter.
My $20 espresso maker exploded and they sent me another one and this one has poor sealing on all the screw on plastic parts including the grind basket so it doesn't actually make espresso just rapidly extracted sour water, the components from the exploded maker actually do form a seal and make espresso so now I have a nice functional unit that makes espresso without stalling for $20, not gonna buy another one it this one explodes too, I'm the QC would be just as shitty if I spent $200 instead.Merry Xmas!
>>21796651After trying a bunch of whole beans vs. pre-ground coffee, I think people drastically overstate the importance of grinding your own. The best cups of coffee I make are the ones I get from the Peet's coffee that I ask them to grind for me. If anything the consistency of the professional grind you get from a coffee shop vs. any reasonable home grinder is enough to outweigh the difference in freshness.
>>21797931you're buying stale supermarket coffee that was probably roasted years ago, of course you're not seeing any difference

>>21796676Had these today, Panaman natural process geisha Really expensive but really good
>>21798548Glad you enjoyed it. I personally don't spend a ton of money on expensive coffee. I've had cheap stuff that's good and expensive stuff that's good.

Did you guys get anything good for Christmas?
>>21799743yesbut not like any physical things.except a good dinner if you count that.oh and a good cup of coffee.:)
>>21799743This cup is so good. Probably the best I've had.
>>21796651Hello I need help. I have a french press I've never used. What's a well priced coffee to use in my press? I prefer dark coffee nut I don't know if I should use ground coffee or beans I grind myself or what?
>>21800227yes
So before I buy a P2 is there anything else I should look at that may be better for a few extra dollars. I dont know much about grinding my own coffee, but the reviews of coffee sticking to the grinder through staticness has kinda put me off a little.
how many coffee beans would i have to eat to die from caffeine poisoing?
>>21800551a lot. you're better off taking a bottle of caffeine pills
>>21800227literally doesn't matter what kind of roast you use, just make sure it's a coarse grind that you preferably do yourself

If I ever get some real coffee making equipment, that's what I want to make.
>>21801996my relatives know what specialty coffee is
So anyone been to Yaw Farms Coffee Roasters? I wanted to go but they were closed because they gave their workers off for the holidays.
Blooming muh kofi
I got a home espresso machine for christmasI'm trying to make lattes, I can do the espresso alright I think (not as strong as I'd like, but oh well), but how do I do the milk thing? I've been watching videos, and mine always turns out way too foamy on top and then liquidy below the foam. What am I probably doing wrong?
>>21803010thats a big bloom
>>21803133depending on the machine you could simply be moving too slowOR too fast.
>>21803139....you're supposed to move? The guide I read said to put it just below the surface for a few seconds, then go lower until it heats up. But yeah that's probably not right for this machine
>>21803143by move i mean how fast you are at completing the necessary steps.as in moving through the process.could you simply tell us the machine.you also have to use the right amount of milk
>>21803174Thanks, it's this one:https://www.amazon.com/DeLonghi-Espresso-Cappuccino-Stainless-EC260BK/dp/B08C96BG9H?th=1I waited for it all to heat up properly. I also watched some videos for it (on Amazon and YT) and they all seem to be showing making a cappuccino with lots of foam. The instruction manual is pretty useless too.
>>21796651Hello fellow coffee enjoyersI'm looking to upgrade from my nescafe classic + milk comboI was thinking of getting the Bambino (not the plus version) and Eureka Mingon FiltroIs that a good combo for starting out? I'm going to make mainly capuccino with occasional espresso
>>21803219Well, how competent are you at frothing milk? If the answer is "not very", get the plus for the automatic frothing. 200 extra dollary doos is nothing to sneeze at ofc, but you did say you were planning on drinking mostly capucinnos
coffee was mid today
Just learned that coffee at starbucks is like $9.makes me feel a lot better about my beans that cost $5 a cup
>>21803193>$99.95 sorry brother but foam is all you're going to get with that machine.also looking at their own image it looks like they themselves made a drink with lots of foam.
>>21803193Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJDmF3zl0ug You just need to take the frother off. You can also spend $10 on the aftermarket metal tips like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CL5WV5PT or if you are a little more mechanically inclined you can buy a rancilio silvia steam wand and replace the whole thing with that but you have to take the machine apart.
>>21803901Thanks, I'll try it without the little frother thing and just the rubber nozzle. Maybe I'll get the metal one too, we'll see.>>21803876If ^^^ doesn't work, I guess I can get used to foamy drinks, or just drink shots all the time
Delonghi fools another one
>>21803936It will work. My nephew wanted to get into espresso last year and I set him up with a similar machine(an ECP model) because he had a very small budget. Its just going to take you a minute to figure it out. Make sure you purge the steam at first, then if you look at the top of your pitcher divide it into 4 in your head and hit the center of one of those quadrants. Submerge the tip and then cut it on, raise the tip a bit so you are aerating it just below the surface, once the pitcher matches the temp of your hand(no longer feels cold) then submerge the tip a little deeper and this step will incorporate the foam and make microfoam. Make sure its got a good spin on it. You can angle to jug a bit if needed. Then purge and wipe the steam wand. Also make sure you are using an appropriate sized pitcher. Its hard to get nice silky milk if the pitcher is too big or small for the amount of milk you are using.
>>21803950It was a gift from my job. They used some service where we could choose one item, there was literally nothing I wanted and just picked this because whatever.>>21803952Ok thanksI guess I should also get a metal pitcher... It didn't come with one
>>21803954If you want mostly lattes/caps for one person/drink at a time I would get a 350ml pitcher.
>this entry level espresso machine is soooooo good u just have to mod the steam wand and mod the grind basket and replace the portafilter and all the bundled accessories and get a scale and a WDT thingy and a....you know what i think i'll stick to my nespresso thanks
>>21804128>entry levelit isntits cheap trash intentionally designed to fool retards.entry level is the Breville Bambino.or something like a flair neoor a rok gc(poor mans cafelat robot)
>>21804144if you have to keep buying aftermarket shit to compensate for poor accessories, it's not a good entry level either
>>21804155>keep buyingwhat?
>>21804144what makes breville bambino better over other automatic thermoblock espresso machines like delongli dedica which are like half the price?
>>21804170>delongli dedicawe've been through this alreadycheck past threads.tldr: the bambino is everything the dedica is but better.>but-you are welcome to compare them yourself but the fact you are asking the question in the first place means you wont be able to understand what you are even comparing, so just steal someone else's opinion on the matter and move on with your life.
>>21804170If you aren't picky get a delonghi machine with a screen and hot milk frothing (Magnifica Evo Next or Eletta Explore if you can find one) and you'll be happy.
Unfortunately this tastes better than all the coffee I've ever had in my life
>>21804386you must've been drinking some bloody awful coffee then
>>21804128>and get a scalengmi
>>21803952Ok I tried and this time it didn't make may foam lol, just warm milk. I might have overcooked it too since I'm using a plastic pitcher. I also think I pulled too much espresso.Overall, the drink is... fine
>>21804676Grim.
How come all the cheap but not total garbage machines are boiler models and ppl on reddit go on and on about their rock solidness and ease of repair over decades meanwhile thermoblock machines are incredibly easy to clog up with limescale and their parts are only made to last a few yearseven just having the boiler already puts it at an advantage because it heats up the whole brewer assembly unlike thermoblocks and doesn't result in sour pulls from heat loss.
>>21804782what's the point of this post?
not sure if i'm using my timemore grinder properly.i turn it counter clockwise until it reaches "0". it's pretty difficult to turn at this position. i do 1 click, its still a bit difficult, but doable. then after a 3 clicks it just becomes fully loose. is that supposed to happen? each click is supposedly a tenth of a circle.
>>21805135At "0" your burrs are touching.>then after a 3 clicks it just becomes fully loose. is that supposed to happen? As you adjust coarser your burrs separate, allowing for larger grinds to fall through the now widened gap. What are you asking?

>>21804944its a bump disguised as mental retardation.
>>21805334I use a Searchpean Ariel. Other good options are 2oz amber glass spray bottles. Couple bucks on amazon.
>>21805334>any water bottle?any spray bottle?surebut the finer the mist the betteryou dont want fat droplets of waterif you have fat droplets then just cup your hand over the bean dosing vessel and give it a couple shakes.same goes if you dont want to spray at all and just drop a droplet or 2 of water directly into the beans.

>>21805987>pressurized portafilters just a tech we haven't perfectedi wonder if a valve that opened once it reached a certain pressure would work better than just a small holelike the brikka.
>>21805991so like an immersion brewer basically, but under high pressures in a closed system. I have no idea how that would turn out. and how would you filter it if the pressure is released before it gets pushed through a basket? sounds interesting though, I have a feeling that soaked and extracted grounds+coffee suddenly going from espresso pressure to ambient would foam up really bigly. throw a little magnetic stirring rod inside for just a tiny bit of agitation maybe..
>>21806047>so like an immersion brewer basically, but under high pressures in a closed system.yesi have never used a pressurised basket but from what i hear it just seems like a contact time or immersion time issue.of course during a regular shot the puck is immersed and saturated with waterand also with a pressurised shot but the water simply passes through too quickly or unevenly to really extract properly.>and how would you filter it if the pressure is released before it gets pushed through a basket?it would be a normal pressurised basket so the outlet is already past the filter and then the valve would sit at the outletsee in this image, just replace that small hole after the filter with the valve.the outlet could be connected to a short piece of pipe/tube that the valve could sit inside of.

>>21807617For me it’s prolog but I do enjoy a coffee collective bean
>>21807746I will try them out next time I afford myself some specialty coffee
>>21803488I can make around 22 cups from a 12 oz bag, cost from 22-25 bucks per bag. So about a dollar and some cents per cup. I also use expensive milk when making cortados and such.
>Cafe bustelo instant>heated water>hazelnut creamerIt's a simple life.
happy new year /ctg/ :)
>>21807885first coffee of the year!:)its *ssiiiipp*... good and tastes like honey nut crunch cereal, at least what i remember it tasting like 15 years ago when i last had it.
>>21807787Pretty much the same but using a bags that are $50/200g
Went back to normal v60 from switch... switch sucks
>>21808293But muh immersion
>>21808411should put a pressure valve on it.
>>21798856Cringe roasts.
>>21808420should have got some Daddy's Girl.
Are automatic grinders worth the cost? Specifically for espresso. A lot of videos I've seen these youtubers all have automatic shit. I mean, when I manually grind it takes maybe 30seconds? Maybe you could just use that extra cost for an automatic to get a better manual grinder?
>>21808434The cost ranges from about $150-$10k. The range of "worth" really depends. What grinder do you have and what grinder are you looking at?
>>21808421+2
>>21808438I have a cheap timemore C3. Haven't done a lot of research yet on automatic grinders but I'd probably have a budget between $100-$200 for a new automatic/manual grinder.
>>21808469$200 will get you a top tier Kinu M47 Phoenix. $230 will get you flat df54. $169 gets you a Shardor 64mm flat.
Another day of good towel coffee.
dude just eyeballs coffee grounds and pours a v60 without a scale or timer or any ritual, he just dumps the water in there, and this freaks out the coffee redditorshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyKXKDADM7c
>>21808499I don't even know why he bothers with a gooseneck if he's going to pour like a twat. Just fucking dump that water in. Agitation max.
>>21808499lmao that's the way I make pour overs, 1:25 ratio, 190F, dumping the water in with a gooseneck and coming back a minute later when it's done, throwing the used filter in the garden.Someone cue the obligatory 'grim' I get every time I post I here.
>>21808499I do this and it tastes fine
I do this and it tastes like shit
>>21808499based normal person
is it a skill issue that I get better results with kalita than v60?
this might seem controversial, but the entry level should be considered a modded gaggia or a manual one like a flair/robot. I really feel like anything below is e-waste most of the time.
>>21808499that siphon is going to flow over when the reservoir is empty..
>>21809084>kalitanomaybe you just like flat bottoms more.
I hate onyx, probably the least deserving "household name" in specialty roasting. I have a feeling they wouldn't be recognized at all if they didn't acquire some lot exclusivity and tokenism because NA doesn't have enough seats at the table. at least Sey is competent.
How many fluid ounces should one shot of espresso be? Two?I got a machine and one is too little but two is too much…I think, can’t tell
>>21809559as many as you like :)
>>21809567I don’t wanna sound dumb but wouldn’t that effect the caffeine or is the amount extracted the same just different concentrations
>>21809581not in a meaningful waylike 60g of espresso pulled from an 18g puck isnt going to have a meaningful amount more than 30g.(i could be wrong)
last coffee of the year
>>21809581If you've ever used a nespresso, you'll notice the crema becomes whiter and more transparent the longer you hold down the lungo button, eventually you're just extracting water and no coffee solutes, this is a lazy way to make an americano but don't tell the coffee redditors that, they'll insist you're extracting the undesirable parts of the grounds too and that you should heat water separately.
>>21810116>If you've ever used a nespressoGrim.
>set kettle lower>coffee is watery and boring>set kettle higher>coffee is bitter and extreme..... I have to buy a stupid fancy kettle don't I.
>>21809581I mean if you pull more water through the grounds then you will extract more coffee but the concentration will be lower. desu most espresso extracts about 20% of the solubles and no matter how much water you push through you'll never get much more than 25%, so just do what's tasty, something within a 1:1 to a 1:3 ratio, personally I like 1:2.5>>21810379for pour over? I couldn't imagine using a non-pour over kettle, but at the same time I'm sure you can get a good result. maybe try to manually stir the grounds a bit with a spoon? it's just one form of agitation after all.
Hypothetically if you were to open up a tiny coffee shop, do you need pour overs or could you survive on espresso and lattes?
>>21810379just get a kettle with a thermometer, I got a hario clone kettle with a thermometer built-in and while it shattered from repeated heat shocks, the thermometer is still good, just keep it at 190F and never boiling.>>21810529People would come in expecting sugary dessert drinks like starbucks and dunkin and would get annoyed if you used the language of sugary dessert drinks without actually shoveling in the sugar.
Do people typically use dark roasts for Espresso? I've tried using a dark roast and a medium-dark roast, I think I preferred the former. Maybe the medium-dark roast bean just sucked?
>>21810767dark roasts produce more crema and espresso redditors want as much crema as possible, crema is the goal, crema crema crema you can never have too muchoh except when the machine literally centrifuges the coffee to make crema, then it's far too much
>>21810529you will die if you dont make matcha coffee and other wildly sweet drinks.
gouda and coffee :)
I love my coffee like my women, hand picked by Juan Valdez, stuffed in a sack, tied up and slung over the back of a donkey.
>>21810379>finally dial in a bean>it changes mid bag
>>21811079>I love my coffee like my womensamehot and black
>make some good espresso yesterday>use the same settings today>extraction timing is off by a few secondswhyyy
>dumb oxo grinder gets jammed doing anything less than medium grind>got used to having pourovers with medium grind>fixed and cleaned it out and now it does fine and espresso fine without clogging>turns out I don't like coffee at medium-fine anymore, it tastes weaker and more acidic and tastes like wood and even smells like wood desuIs this what dialing in espresso feels like?
These niggas drinking beans
>>21811498Espresso is just simply superior.
Bruh
>>21811844hey free shipping, nice.
>>21811844guess I'm never checking out what this roaster is about. also very garish branding
>>21811045had some more for breakfast:)
anybody here tried freezing their beans and tried them side by side with the same beans that were not refrigerated? why is my brew with the frozen beans more bitter ceteris paribus?
>>21811920whatever just give me the coffee. better site than native.
How will the US bombing of Venezuela affect coffee in the region?
>>21812525They don't grow coffee in Caracas.
>>21812525Venezuela doesnt grow good coffee so it doesnt matter.
I got a burr grinder. A metal pour over. I get my beans green and roast them to a light roast, and am capable of roasting them to a NLR with the logs I have from Artisan. I then degass that light roast for seven days. I temperature control my coffee to 185 degrees farenheit. I use a 1:17 ratio(1:16 ratio if I'm using a French press). The water I use is crisp mineral water filtered just enough to remove excessive minerals - like the water you'd use for a really good tea. And finally, I brew using the non agitation method after blooming with approximately 40 grams of water. Have I defeated coffee finally? Have I slain the beast?
New to this hobby and I seemly cannot make a not sour cup of espressoTried several beans and even replaced my machine in the worry it was defective however it seems im the one who's defective. Using a eureka mignon notte currently using black cat intelligentsia beans. I've tried just about every setting adjusting the burrs. The expresso maker works fine with just basic café bustelo expresso preground so It must be what im doing with the grinder. The water is boston city tap water run through a filter and using a Brevil Babino for the pour.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
>>21812760>Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.sorry but you need a Manument to get non-sour espresso.hope this helps
>>21812760Simple fix - grind smaller. You're probably under-extrating the espresso. Increase yield size slightly so if it was 18 grams in, 36 grams out change it to 18 grams in, 40-45 grams out. Aim for a temperature of 200 degrees farenheit. Tell me what dose, yield, shot times, and roast to brew date you've been using and I might be able to help you further
>>21812748I don't know. Does it taste good?
>>21812822Did some more tests to get about what you reccomended.Start was about 11g (as thats what the line is on the filter basket.) Yield 29g time to pour 30.6 seconds. No idea the roast date as it dosnt say on the bag. Temp is 200 on the brevil by default. Defiantly less sour by following your instructions but it's still there. I assume I need to make it slightly smaller grind to to make it good?
>>21812911You’re under-extracting. Sour = not enough extraction.Stop dosing 11g - that’s too small. Ignore the basket line and use a scale.Try 18g in, 40–45g out in ~30–35s at 200°F. Grind finer until you get there. If it’s still sour, increase yield before grinding even finer. Also note: Black Cat has some acidity by design - it won’t taste like Café Bustelo. If you want zero sour, use a darker roast.
>>21812760https://www.baristahustle.com/the-espresso-compass/>black cat intelligentsia beans>bostonyou can walk to george howell or little wolfgeorge howell even does free coffee classes https://www.eventbrite.com/o/george-howell-coffee-16906976150
>>21812918So i got it to 18 grams yielding 43g at 35 seconds. Was still pretty sour. I tried increasing yield. Getting 60 grams at 45 sec 80 at 50sec and 103g at 60sec. Was kinda sour the whole way through until 103g at 60 sec which seemed decent although pretty watered down. Is there somthing else that could be the problem?
>>21812760>eureka mignon nottelmao
So today I learned that the grind of the bean will affect the flavour and I am thinking this might explain why coffee shops using the same local roast can be miles apart in taste when using the same locally roasted beans. My absolute favourite coffee and my worst come from different shops using the same bean. I will have to be sure to experiment when my first grinder turns up next week. I am going to buy a bag of the exact beans they use and see what sort of results I can get myself.
How many grams of coffee to use in a single cup of coffee using french press? Or grams to ml of water ratio I guess I would like to know, baring in mind I probably. Also, if I add 70ml of milk to my coffee do I need to take this into consideration for my ratios.
Grind quality is the only thing that affects coffee quality, not weight, nor extraction time, nor pressure gradient.
>>21813516TRVKE
>>21813516For me its the Timemore C2.
>WHAT BURR GRINDER SHOULD I BUY?><$50 > Timemore Chestnut C2it's $80 what happened
>>21813636>it's $80 what happenedi get a kickback every time i recommend one so they increased the price to compensate.
>>21813432I will never understand people going to coffee shops that don't roast their own. Whats the point? I understand if you are out somewhere and just want a coffee but to deliberately be like, I want a coffee lets go to X" and its just somewhere buying in beans like why?
>dialing in your grinder for a bag of beansif this the biggest fucking lie or whati have to grind ever so slightly finer EVERY SUBSEQUENT FUCKING TIME to get a good pullwhy the FUCK can't this shit just be consistentfresh beans or 1-2 months old, same story
>>21812525>he doesn't exclusively buy ethiopian beans
God I love the yearly christmas filtering.
>>21813951skill issuei dont do that and i pull better shots than you
>>21813966did i get filtered?
>>21813978all coffee is filtered in some way
total adjustment amounted to ~2.5 markings on a DF64 over the course of about a month for a 1 kg bag or about 1/10 of a marking or 1/3 of a degree rotation per day
>>21813993>1 kg bagdont buy thosebuy 4 250g bagsthey last longer and taste betterwhich leads to less adjustment per dayretard.realistically you would only need to adjust once or twice per bag.
>>21813993wow i fucked that up somehow kekmeant to replay to >>21813975 and say i promise you don't pull better shots, i've mastered mr roboto and by a "good pull" i mean the best pullperfectly serviceable coffee without adjusting but it's measurably different (and tastier) with adjustments>>21813999i'm telling you there are measurable differences in extraction time one day to the next with same beans, same grind setting (with aligned ssp burrs), same ratio, etc.you don't NEED to adjust it, but if you want to maintain the same taste profile and extraction you shouldi'm a research physicist man, if there's anything i know it's reproducibility, and just doing everything the same was not enough to get the perfect pull back to back to back, the grind needed to change ever so slightlymaybe it's the torque from the motor slightly unscrewing the top cause that's how the grind adjustment works on the df64 so the change is really bringing it back to 0 but for me at least to get the perfect pull every day i need to tweak the grind by a cunts hair
>>21814010extraction time is meaninglesstaste is all that matterswell that and aesthetics.also that robot looks nakedput some clothes on him please.
>>21814042>taste and aestheticsunfortunately these seem to be diametrically opposed for memy best looking shot is probably picrel, but i remember it tasting like bland nothingand my best tasting shot was a ~10 second turbo that looked like the foulest liquid shit from a deathly ill animal
>>21814060what i mean is i think people should go for taste first, then aesthetics and everything else like ratios and extraction % are all meaningless.
>>21814072obviously taste is the benchmark, but ratios and extraction times are easy and measurable metrics people can use as a starting point to finding their ideal tasteit would be pretty hard for someone to accidentally stumble upon the fact that they like turbo shots from light roasted african beans without some guidancei mentioned the time of the pulls cause it's quantifiable, so in addition to wondering why my pulls weren't as quite as perfect as the day or two before, i could see a measurable difference in how long it would take to pull a shot, even if it was only 2 seconds differentthat's when i tried adjusting slightly every morning and tasted just that little bit better
>>21814109dont you think you could be fooling yourself into thinking you made a good shot because you hit the mark after adjusting even though in a vacuum the shot wasnt actually as good as you thought it was.i guess the only way to know for sure is to have someone else make the coffee and you score it independently and then say at the end of a month compare notes from what they did for each shot vs what you tastes for each shot.then you could see if your tastes lined up with actual data and you would know its not because you are aware that a change was made.
just drank vista hermosa from coffee collectivei remember the last batch i tried being really finicky: i had to underextract to be pleasent and still it wasnt really goodthis batch is really pleasent however! it's a nutty coffee but with a delicious acidity, the more it cools it reminds me of cinnamon, but in a way only washed coffees remind me (co-ferments are usually too linear to feel it)recipe: 15g, 250g, 5 pours with boiling water
thinking about coffeebut perhaps i should just go to bed...
