good coffeegoffee even
What's the best way to make coffee? What's the best coffee powder?I've been going to the local Tim Horton's for coffee or boiling water dumping coffee powder into the pot.Teach me, /ck/.I don't care about the price of coffee machine as long as its not too expensive. Or is boiling hot water in a pot and dumping coffee powder the best way?

>>21814620buy the p1 and shut up about it
Do I really have to buy a $400 espresso machine when $100 delolghis exist?Do I really have to run a bunch of water through the machine to warm it up and even preboil the handle because it can't possibly be my technique or coffee grind, no it's the brew temp ruining my coffee.Do I really have to waste a bunch of coffee dialing in with a an autistic scale and timer perfectly timing the shot myself and whisking the puck and using spring loaded tampers because unpressurized aftermarket portafilter are soooooooo much better you're just gonna make sour coffee if you use the included pressurized double spouted portafilter they're for the unwashed plebs who buy preground but not you, you're special and need to make a 20 minute ritual out of making 40ml of black swilly'know what I think I'll stick to my nespresso thanks

>>21815227I like brewing coffee, most of the steps are completely optional and people act like they're not.
>>21815227I was in a foul mood because my hand grinder handle broke and then like 1 minute later the bottom compartment that holds the grounds wiggled from the force of the grinding and came loose and spilled like 15+ grams of almost-completely-ground beans all over my carpet.I don’t want to have to go spend $200 on a grinder, it’s a depressing thought.

Should I get a Kingrinder k6 for 13,000 jpy ($83)Or a 1Zpresso K-ultra for 32,000 jpy ($204)I do almost just pour over but if I have a quality grinder I wanna start fucking with my mokapot more. Always using specialty coffee I roast myself at home. Wondering if The K6 is “good enough” or if it’s better to take a buy once cry once approach and if the extra price is worth it.

trying to think of why I would regret a picopresso over a manual lever like a flair and failing to come up with anything. even workflow I don't think it really wins cause the counterspace detraction from all other kitchen workflow makes it favorable.
>>21816414what about heat management?
>>21816416oh it's got bad retention? that might be a problem yeah. desu even flair seems not ideal in that regard
>>21816414Seems like it would be super annoying as your only espresso machine but its only like $100 so might as well get it and give it a shot. At least if you don't like it you can use it for travel or whatever and just buy a flair for home use.
>>21816425>oh it's got bad retention?i have no idea, but im just askingand the fact that you dont know is reason enough to hold off and do a little more research.i do know that usually portable espresso machines have at best annoying heat management so i assume the pico is the same waythe flair needs to be preheated in some way as seen herehttps://youtu.be/Ye5Amz7ddYw?si=Sihn287yjybSOoBi&t=208and in lance's video of the pico he does a preheat toohttps://youtu.be/yZnQ67SyUYg?si=TIWJ56lHS_TPug7M&t=295you dont need to preheat to pull a good shot but it seems that everyone recommends it.and preheating espresso machines is so important its the whole reason flair has an electric version thats sole purpose is to preheat the brew chamber with as little work from you as possible.but considering how cheap and small it is, that annoyance might just be worth it for you.
>>21816436I don't travel, I just worry about finding space for a flair, would have to remove it from my kitchen counter when not in use which seems not very nice, the pico seems very easy to stash away in a kitchen cabinet, got a pressure gauge and a quickly assembled stand, very appealing. I would pretty much exclusively use it for lighter roasts though so if it can't retain heat that's fucked
>>21814350>a cortadoThank you and good morning. I'm having mine right now in Florida. Oh, and "Vive la libertad Venezuela!"
>>21816444Isn't there also a portable flair now? I'm pretty sure there is and it packs up fairly flat. That might be another option. I would say though that if you are drinking espresso every day it might be worth thinking about making some counter space. Perhaps something is there now that you aren't using daily. >>21816447Morning cortado friend.
>>21816414>failing to come up with anything. even workflow I don't think it really wins cause the counterspace detractionAs long as you have enough space for your cutting board without repositioning, I would say good coffee is #1 priority in the daily life. Go for it. If countertops have depth, you can always park it farther back and use a moving tray to bring it closer. I have a vacation house with an electric IMUSA moka that I keep on top of the fridge when not in use. It's for 3PM moods.
If pavoni did an esperto version without the boiler and retrofitted for the modern manual lever kettle based workflow they would absolutely OBLITERATE everything else in that market category. Probably could do it cheaper than flair 58 too.
>>21816589>couldwould they tho?i have a feeling they would make it niche and more expensive.also i dont see how it would "OBLITERATE " the flair.i would argue they would make the same coffee but look aesthetically different.arguably the flair would make marginally better coffee because of the heater.

I want to get a ‘prosumer’ espresso machine E61 style. Are all these Italian built ones sourcing the exact same parts? I had a ‘consumer’ one that broke after two years and I was annoyed with the poor temp consistency and pump pressure and of course it being broken so fast. I think a single boiler E61 would be fine but idk if it’s worth paying more for a brand or whatever. ECM seems ideal. I do espresso daily and steam milk a few times a week and I do a lot of drinks for guests every few months
>>21818617>I had a ‘consumer’ one that broke after two years and I was annoyed with the poor temp consistencyif im not wrong, temp consistency is a problem in all e61s since there's always a big temp mismatch between the boiler and the grouphead, wouldn't it be better to get a non-e61 in that case?if you really want a e61, i heard good things about the lelit mara x, it's on the cheaper end and the pid is set by temperature, but still it looks like a great machine that isnt wildly expensive
>>21818630The ‘consumer’ models generally use a thermal block system to heat and they’re good because they got hot quick but they’re bad because they break. Mine broke. It doesn’t get hot anymore and the manufacterer doesn’t care. The prosumers heat up the water isntesd if sending cold water through the heat block. The heat exchangers use a heated boiler with a pipe running through it that cools down the hot water for the shot and if you pull successive shots too quickly you will run out hot water but if you give it 30-49 seconds between shots you’ll be ok. The issue with non dual boiler E61s is you’ll not be able to pull shots successively like in a shop because your water temp drops as it flows through the machine. So the consumers issue is the heat block system is fast and breaks. The low E61 issue is the water needs time to heat up at first (10-30mins) and then every shot and steam you cycle water though the colder machine and it drops a few degrees and needs to be rewarmed. The heat exchangers can even sit and get too cold in the group head so you have a purge to flow warm water in to get it ready. It’s a little more micromanagement but in exchange you have reliable parts that can be wrenched in and out if they fail. It’s very annoying to spend $500 and it breaks within two years with no fix. The Breville types also get way too much pressure and I don’t see anyway to limit it to 9 bars unlike the E61 which have a pressure Valve you can customize to your liking.Lelit Mara X looks like the best option for the best price. I just didn’t know if I was missing something important. Also. The consumer models are fine but I use it probably 20+ times a week and it’s really not built for that. You can get good espresso fast but it’s oddly a lot more tricky to get consistently excellent shots and I’m at the point where it’s annoying and I can taste 12 vs 7 bars. I may try to get a used Linea Mini. Is it worth it?

>>21818766>Can’t wrench lol. The appeal of these to me is you can fix them yourself. >>21818791What would you get in my shoes? I don’t have any nostalgia for E61 or any snobbery about it or and attachment to brand. I just want to get a great shot every time. The Mara X looks really good to me but the ECM that’s around $1200 looks good
>>21818891Fixing them yourself is fine. A $6000+ light commercial machine shouldn't be running you an extra $280 a year. Full stop. Thats about a used gaggia a year. Have fun working on that instead. Spend the other $5700 on your grinder and nice coffee.
>>21818891>What would you get in my shoes? I don’t have any nostalgia for E61 or any snobbery about it or and attachment to brand.Breville dual boiler.
>>21818955I’m thinking ECM brand; Breville died right after warranty with no parts to fix
>>21819168The dual boiler is a very different machine to your thermoblock. You can probably get one to repair and mod for v e r y cheap. The only ECM I'd consider would be a Puristika(to easily put in a rotary pump) but you want a steam wand so thats a non starter.https://www.home-barista.com/espresso-machines/breville-dual-boiler-mods-and-maintenance-t61421.htmlhttps://espressoaf.com/manufacturers/breville/rotary.htmlhttps://www.home-barista.com/repairs/breville-dual-boiler-bes920bs-rebuild-t96296.html

I do agree though it would be wise to avoid the marketing and spending ladders and just get a good machine. Like someone else pointed out the LMLM costs $6k and still needs the cost of a Bambino every few years in maintenance on top of it. That’s just sad. I don’t like the consumable throwable nightmare of cheap machines but I don’t like that the nice ones are built in the EU and have the mudslime welfare taxes built in to the price. >>21819407being poor is sad
>>21818617For reference I have an Astra Gourmet, a CT1, and an old LP I rebuilt. Based on your comments here I would recommend an Astra(either pro or gourmet) for a few reasons. Its more light professional than prosumer and its really built to last. It is also super easy to work on. More or less every single part can be bought at any hardware store in the US. The pump is a Procon pump which is easy to buy online, 2000w heating element which is higher than basically anyone else, 4L boiler. All flare fitting and made in the US if you care about that. I've had mine for well over a decade with no problems. Most places really do not make them like this especially these days. They are also pretty easy to find used. >>21818753Are you sure put together and tightened properly and you are using it correctly? If so send it back for a replacement. >>21819254Its a 1 kilo batch size drum roaster. Unless you want to drop a lot more money that's the best you are going to get.

>>21821064I see. Maybe I should try my Aeropress then since that uses paper filters. Instead of my french press which has a metal filter.
>>21821002>instant coffeeThere's your issue. All the major producers of instant coffee overextract to the point of extracting insoluble 'woody' compounds. About 30% of a roasted coffee bean is soluble, normal brewing extracts up to 22%, but instant coffee production can extract up to 50%. These insoluble compounds are indigestible and are known to cause issues in people. Even metal filtered won't give you the shits the same way instant does.

>>21822616>Still having adverse reactions to coffee from time to timePalpitations/Migraine from an insufficient quantity of coffee to get the caffeine shakes for you = mold and/or pesticides. Avoid Light & Medium roasts (Dark burns out the acrylamides). Don't buy giga-roaster brands. Don't over-steep the been ratio. Have Benadryl on hand if it persists. If it's the caffeine, then Vitamin B1 supplementation may help (strips it, so does too many carbs, and alcohol). Also-- look up the seasonal bean harvests by world region, then try to get store brands that list the origin for freshness. Freezing halts the gassing process, so you can just chuck them in if you're paranoid about mold in a humid environment.

>>21816236I just do french press, so thinking a P0 will suffice, but maybe a P2 just to make it a bit more universal if the need arises
>>21827237Too late saar…I have purchasing the 1z k-ultra…
Anyone else ever feel like even with all the expensive gear and coffee that you’re just LARPING and can’t actually taste the difference between a G1 Ethiopian Yirgacheff and Maxwell house?
>>21826854>No you don’t understand the only good coffee is 96+ cup graded specialty coffee from hyper limited lots in a Nordic light roast ONLY.this is essentially a statement of fact>Coffee should taste like thin watery tea and acid, everything else is basically Folgers.yes I have an issue with that part, his extractions are too low, most people don't find that pleasant.
>>21827254Not at all.
>>21827254I dunno. I just got into coffee and I think Im making a better coffee than all my friends that have had fancy coffee machines for years. Im not sure whats up with that?
>>21827254no
>>21827258> this is essentially a statement of factGb2plebbit Every person I’ve ever met irl who unironically thinks this way always looks like the quintessential skinnyfat estrogen filled Redditor. Real Chads know that proper coffee should have noticeable body and that roast flavors aren’t inherently bad.
>>21827284You can have plenty of body with light roasts, do you think light roasts magically become watery and thin despite pulling out just as many solubles in just as concentrated an espresso shot? and even a wendelboe coffee has roast flavors, it's just got other complexities going on.
>>21827201>didn't bloom
>>21827357thats not what i saidi just called you a retard because resting has nothing to do with blooming
>>21814381Too many brown ppl at Tims. Even my parents stopped going
I want to become a producer! man they are doing some interesting stuff these days, but the definitions of what makes something a true natural vs washed vs honey is getting muddled with all the sorts of fermentation and messing around with years and more going on.
>>21827173> How Taiwan is becoming a specialty coffee playerーNHK WORLD-JAPAN NEWS
I use a timemore c2 grinder and a melitta ceramic 102 pourover. I use 7g of beans (usually trader joe's JoeTM medium roast coffee) in 350g of water heated to 180F. I don't have a gooseneck. I don't know what blooming is and I don't care either.
>>21827391Use 21g of beans.
>>21827173I think it's a genetic thing that only scandinavians can properly handle premium beans. "pushing into" specialty roasts makes about as much sense as indians "pushing into" 100m sprinting
>>21827395Did you even watch it? Its about cultivation.
>>21827395Nordic roast is a meme and you only think it tastes good because Reddit told you to. If Lance reddit man told you retards that the only proper way to serve coffee is actually if it is completely un roasted you would all immediately start brewing with green coffee.
>>21827386Why would you ever want to be a producer? You’d have to work with brownoids all day.
>>21827401no I didn't watch it. but also isn't taiwan too low lying for specialty beans? I just assumed roasting cause people in east asia do kinda love that part of the market even if they're second grade at it
>>21827405correction, I guess it's not that it's too low but too cold. either way, seems like an unrealistic aim, I thought they were already kinda at max capacity
>>21827405Altitude is a meme, do you think the coffee knows that it is living at higher altitude so it decides to make itself taste better?Altitude is only important because it helps naturally control the temperature; how when the sun is out and cool at night. Taiwan is an island, not a shithole desert like Africa, winds from the coast have a cooling effect like how higher altitude coffees are chilled at night. Why do you think Kona coffee is so good despite it growing in low altitude?
>>21827402I'm the same anon that shat on lance earlier in the thread. >>21827410less oxygen and atmosphere also affects growth. not to mention that the island breeze/massenerhebung effect thing is very conditional and I assumed they were already using the limited places that applied. there's a reason hawaii isn't producing 20% of the worlds coffee, I assume taiwan is the same.
>>21827404you don't want to make your own varietals of your own flavors and experiment, sharing these discoveries and tastes with the world?
>>21827409Man its like a 4 minute video. Just watch it. They literally address everything you've asked. They already grow coffee and have been for a while. They have a few different regions that are good for growing. Until now it was mostly for domestic consumption. Many of these farms are now focusing on specialty coffee, interesting varietals, and wanting to pivot to international distribution.
>>21827410>altitude a memeholy moly anon, please learn about basic biology>>21827414I'll have to go back and check, what don't you like about lance and who do you like/rec instead?
>/ctg/ - 4 minute video watching general
>>21827423>I'll have to go back and check, what don't you like about lance and who do you like/rec instead?see >>21826280he's obsessed with 16-17% extraction, he hates body, and most of his advice is aimed at reaching that goal, and I don't think that's helpful for the vast vast majority of people that like light roasts. sure, he caveats and tells you what to do to influence what, but most people are stupid so I think he's a bad ambassador for specialty coffee.
>>21827422but I don't want to..
>>21827427fair fair, yeah he also leans utlra-light. I don't follow coffee people, if anyone I follow farms, but the only ones I know into coffee are my freinds/roaster-owners and they're biased in their own ways even if it's only a little bitWho do you like and any roasters and coffees you rec?
>>21827427I wonder how many people have been scammed into spending $200 on a ZP6 to make coffee they hate because of Redditor coffee YouTubers kek.
>>21827434I lean ultra light too, my preferences for preparations are just not the same. I need the sweetness and his extraction just doesn't get much of it imo. >>21827435can't go wrong with getting an zp6 no matter what coffee you settle on imo. unless you're frail and don't want to mill your own beans
>>21827440what's your recipe anon? I use a Switch and a K6, 1:15, very simple stuff on my end as I go into it last year
>>21827444same ratio, just a jx-pro and an orea, sometimes an aeropress. I'd like a switch but realistically I can't imagine it makes a huge difference from an aeropress.
dutch roasters suck
>>21827254difference in coffee is so on-the-nose im genuinely astonished you canr
>>21827499is that true? I was gonna try manhattan coffee roasters
>>21827254I can 1000% tell, some days at work I drink from the shitty Folgers premade machine out of boredom and it’s obviously much much worse.I can tell the difference if I let my pourover brew for 10-15 seconds longer than usual. What’s wrong with you?
>>21827519their high end coffees are perhaps good but their low end stuff is overpriced
having a horrific weekbut at least the coffee is good :)
warning, there will be slurping.slurrrrp
>>21827254No. I don't have a lot of expensive gear, and I mostly use a switch. My coffee taste fantastic and I can taste each and every single flavor.
When is juicy strawberry coming back.

Qrd what do I buy for an espresso machine on a $500 budget? I already have a Baratza Encore ESP grinder. A bambino? I previously had like a $130 Amazon espresso machine and realized I was never properly making espresso for like 4 years. Also I drink like 12 shots a day is that too much
