More Chardonnay.
Give it to me straight. Is the Burgundy/Bordeaux glass difference for light/full body a meme?
>>21927259I've been wondering this myself, I need to A/B some wines with glasses of equivalent quality.
>>21927259height of a bordeaux glass is helpful for wines with aggressive alcoholotherwise the opening size of a glass can be beneficial in letting wine breathe. Getting further into the autism besides 2, maybe 3 types is not worth the headache.
>>21927084holy kek
>>21927259Yes Just get a universal and be done with it
>>21927259Yes, it has more to do with the nose and tannin perception than body
I feel like body is the biggest fucking meme on evaluating a wine. Like ok perceived acidity or sweetness, red/black fruit (or stonefruit/citrus), tannin grip, nose approach and finish, secondary/tertiaries, etc. are all important, but what the fuck is the “body” supposed to contribute? Oh it feels THICK in texture. What is that even supposed to fucking mean. Especially if tannin content is being considered a separate phenomena. So what does that leave, viscosity? Outside of ultra thick dessert wines most wines have the consistency of, you know, wine- which is close to water. While writing I thought of a good extreme example of a mango puree or smoothie. That would have a thick mouthfeel compared to water, but I haven’t exactly encountered a wine skewing in that direction. Even if I did, how would that impact my enjoyment of the taste? I will end this rant with a conciliatory notion that I’ve had my share of gross outs when gulping an unexpected large clump of bottle dregs from either beer or wine
>>21928181Trvke
>>21928181Body is real but it is grossly overvalued, i perceive body as the weight of the wine, like literally how heavy it is for my tongue to lift the wine around my palate. Like I find the weight of Viognier to be absolutely revolting.
>>21928181>>21928290
>>21928181just because your palate isn't good enough to evaluate body doesn't mean it's a 'meme', plebe
>>21928290>how heavy it isidk man it all seems to have basically the same density to me and I bet if you float a hydrometer you’re looking at variances in a few percent. Good to bring up viognier though because that refreshed my memory of perceiving it as “oily”. So maybe the presence lipophilic substances can add to this texture phenomenon. Some googling also mentioned the difference of skim milk vs. whole milk or cream which I think is illustrative enough. Still it seems like such a minor, minor constituent in your perception idk why it’s mentioned in like every fucking evaluation. Reminds me of picky eaters with things like mushrooms of “oh it’s not the taste that bothers me, it’s the TEXTURE”. Which I guess I can understand in extreme examples like slimy eggwhites or my previous one of bottle dregs, but I couldn’t imagine drinking a wine and going “oh well the acidity, fruit profile, etc. all good but NOPE the mouthfeel (disregarding tannins) is too THIN” then hurling the glass to the floor and shattering it
>>21926245I drink 3 figure wine every day>the 3 figures are 4.99
>>21928323just because you replied to my post without addressing any of the points and asserting aloof superiority doesn’t make you correct, faggot
does /vin/ like Line 39? I tried it on Amtrak once and really liked itidk shit about wine so if this is actually bad tell me, perhaps i grew to like it because i was on vacation
>>21928290>Filtered by the oily sensation of Viognier Yikes
>>21928471You like drinking a slug? I like oily Italian whites no problem, I like marsanne Rosanne too, Viognier is a minor blending grape at best.
>>21927536No I like to have different glasses to spice it up. I have 4 pairs mainly (white, sparkling/champaign, burg, bord glasses) and some generics for the plebs
>>21928754these wines are good but they've gotten too expensive for what they areand I say that as someone who will spend a lot if the quality's there
What the hell is "leather flavor"?
Alcoholic here. Usually I spend every weekend getting buzzed with Gin or Vodka. (Not shitfaced mind you, I just ride a buzz for 4-6 hours) Should I switch to wine? Is it healthier or is that just a meme? I figured you guys would know.
>>21929241I think it can be healthier, I find when I cook for myself and have a wine with dinner I often slow down a bit, enjoy things more and overall consume slightly less than when I used to binge brown and beer and get junk food delivered and wake up feeling destroyed. >>21928970I think some of Tablas “entry” level single varietals or whenever they put out a new single vineyard (not their Pinot) is where the best value is for that producer. Like the Marsanne in the background was my favorite white when I visited and it was one of the cheapest.
>>21929241I used to be a big rum and rum cocktail guy but recently I've switched over to red wine and I've found that I sleep better and I haven't had a proper hangover in a while, it's still very bad for my blood pressure though. ymmvidk shit about red wine btw but I've taken a liking to malbecs and cabarnet sauvignons and things on the drier side, I have absolutely no idea how to describe their tastes in any depth beyond "hmm, that's red and dry"
>>21929234brunello with serious age on it
>>21929241Wine is a poor alcohol for vast consumption IMO>healthierI guess technically but it's still shit for you
>>21929241>>21929964Adding onto this though if you just get buzzed on the weekends you're not an alcoholic. If you do insist on drinking lots of wine for cheap try to hit a minimum price of about $15 dollars, anything less and you risk added sugars which will send you to headache city

>>21929969>$15 dollars, anything less and you risk added sugars which will send you to headache cityEven if the wine is dry and has no sweet taste at all? I used to buy cheap wine from supermarkets and it didn't taste like it had sugar at all. (Though it did taste bad but whatever.) Don't they have to write on the label if they have added sugars?
damn who knew Grolleau could actually taste good when the guy making it isnt bad
>>21931271Looks like some Natty shit.I never trust labels like this lol.
>>21931662Its actually good natty shit. Better than Babass’ Grolleau. Camille Saillant is the winemaker. He does amazing Chenin and Sauvignon Blanc as well.
>>21931678>CheninWhats with Natty producers always trying to ruin this based grape?
>>21931736You do know that most top Chenin are natural right?Nicolas Joly is borderline natural.
Clos Selene allocation arrived :)
I'm not actively participating in this thread out of pique. I cannot afford three figure pinot noir and I feel that the topic is an attack on my socioeconomic class. I shall participate in the next, more inclusive thread. Eat the rich.
Just got my 2024 Pinots from Sandler Wine Co yesterday. Popped a 23 I had in my cellar and can’t get over how much I like their Pinot. I usually avoid California PN like the plague but it’s the perfect blend of tart and sweet with a pleasing body and mouthfeel. Good stuff!
>>21931926you want value? drink cotes de gascogne, drink timorasso, drink carmenere, drink aussie grenache, drink colombia valley merlot.
>>21931956I am a value hunter. Though it would appear my tastes differ from yours. Anyway see you in a week or two.
>>21931926There's plenty of decent Pinot Noir that isn't burgundy (though it'll never scratch the itch of a good burg). Especially if you're in NY.
>>21932013Low key I think on the west coast, for the value, Oregon is competitive.
>>21932019Oregon does some good onesSouth Africa does too.For any Leafs out there some stuff rom Niagara is good too.
>>21926245Got one of these, but 2023. The malbec version is way more famous, so I'm curious if this one is not as good.
>>21931271I like this label
>>21932239Ive never enjoyed Catena’s stuff. Way too extracted and no complexity or mouthfeel texture, its just jammy water. That goes double for El Enemigo.Ive had some good experiences with Alpamanta but Argentina as a wine area feels very underdeveloped for serious low intervention, high quality wine. Even though i give Cali shit at least they have Jolie Laide and Sandhi.
What should I get drunk on during my upcoming flight?>Champagne:Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle, N.V>White:2022 Domaine de Baronarques Blanc, AC Limoux, France2023 Motzenbäcker Krug'scher Hof Riesling, Rheinhessen, Germany>Red:2018 Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte 'Les Hauts de Smith', AC Pessac-Leognan, France2021 Levantine Hill Estate Syrah, Yarra Valley, Australia
If it wasn't for islam, North Africa and the Middle East would have a prominent winemaking industry comparable to that in Europe.
>>21932568Champagne and Bordeaux
>>21932742Not really. Given how bad climate change is getting they dont really have much available land that would produce quality wines that wouldnt have insane problems with heat waves. Even Andalusia is starting to become unviable so Morocco would definitely not be making anything good anytime soon.

>>21932522IDK, so many people seems to love Catena and Argentinian wines. Perhaps you are more into fruitier and sweeter wines? Unfortunately these you names aren't readily available here, the one Jolie Laide I found is 4 times more expensive than Catena where I live.
I have a massive crush on the wine bar owner guys. I need to constantly remind myself that bartenders/baristas/sommeliers are not your gf. Or are they? She's giving me mixed signals. If I go for it and take an L I have to change bars. Last time I went there she clearly had space to pass by, yet she put her hand on my shoulder and brushed herself against me a little. She had no reason to do that.Shit pisses me off.
>>21934245I'm not into sweeter wines but I'm also not a big fan of too much oak. I either want glouglou or earthy/floral.>>21934982I'm gonna go out on a whim and say it was just the owner trying to get by and being comfortable with being handsy to pass someone, especially because women have no boundaries regarding touching men. If you like her I guess just be more subtly assertive and if its received well then continue from there until you get a blatant sign that she's interested like being overtly flirty and eyes locking onto you.Honestly the last girl I tried to get into a relationship with who was a service girl was flakey as fuck and I couldn't deal with it.
>>21934982Does she give you free shit? If she’s not giving you free shit she’s not into you.
>>21935083She gives me free snacks yeah and she's let me try her personal wine once.>>21935074I'm not saying a single word to her and it's on her to come and whisper in my ear how she wants to sit on my face. Either she does that or I don't engage and she has to settle for less.
>>21930614YesNo
>>21935083I worked at a wine bar and frequented many and the girls working there always gave me free shit when they knew I'm in the business or to any guy who was somewhat interested in wine. It happens more often than you think. Also they're usually married or engaged unless they're super young.
>>21935111>I'm not saying a single word to her and it's on her to come and whisper in my ear how she wants to sit on my faceOkay well no girl will do that unless you're twinkmaxxing and not giving off gay vibes. It may be 2026 but women still expect the guy to make the first move.

Guys I found out a good way to cut back on the drinking, just buy cheaper wine. I've been drinking too much lately so I got this yesterday. Managed to get through one (1) glass and I was done for the night. You're ruining your health buying that fancy stuff, stop being rich.
>>21939058Idk, there is good cheap wine, bought pic related for 13 bucks and its quite nice. Why even drink if it isnt up to taste.
>>21939098Where is that $13? That bottle sells for almost $20 here, and that's at a shop that is considered fairly inexpensive by local standards

>>21939119I like Variation, i often have them.Pic related should be good, cant wait to open it
>>21939132>capitalising "Variation"Yep, anon is a real german alright. If I was german I'd drive around the autobahn day in an W116, with a reidel glass of spatburgunder in one hand, and dry firing my korth 44 magnum with the other hand. The car would have less than 100k kilometers on the odometer, which is basically nothing because it's a W116. Every time it would hit 100k I'd throw it in the rhine and buy a new oneThe wheel would be held steady by one foot (no shoes but I would have an albert kreuz sock on it to avoid getting footprints on the pristine, museum-grade steering wheel. A handsome short haired blonde woman with a hearty man jaw, clad in nothing but latex and an SS hat (no swastika because that's illegal and I do NOT support that ideology) would be writhing in the passenger seat, a bluetooth vibrator stuck in her assGod I wish I was german

>>21942884Does Drops of God (the manga) even talk about Jura? Also im pretty sure Savoie is becoming the new Jura right now, pray the Millenials dont latch on.
>>21943714No idea, their wine industry is quite new and the only examples i see in my market are overpriced shit like Ao Yun (owned by the same company that makes Hennessy and D’Yqueum) but ive heard theyve been doing more natty shit lately mirroring trends in Japan.
>>21943721I thought the consensus is that natty is ass. Unless it's Japanese I suppose, because we all know that thing Japan = better.
>>21942492Romanee Conti Literally shoes up a few times in this video
>>21943737Have you ever drank wine from a shoe?
>>21943739Ya I've drank Cali reds many times
>>21943729Thats the consensus for boomer retards who only drink Napaslop.
>>21943750Woah damn I'm cooked now. Last time I posted about a natty bottle that I couldn't tell if it was spoiled or if that's just how it's supposed to taste, and anon's said natty wine is a meme. I have had one other good natural wine bottle though so I don't even know anymore.
>>21943767It is and isn’t a meme. The risk of bottle variation and flaws is higher and only a fraction of producers advertising themselves as natty can ackshually pull it off. Most of the best natty producers don’t even advertise it or bother getting their shit certified.
>>21943905You need a certification to advertise your wine as natty? Need to check, but I feel like that doesn't apply to my country. The first natty wine I had was great. Next week I tried another, and as I had said earlier, I asked the dude if it's ok for the bottle to be from 2018, considering it's 26 now, and google says natty wines don't last as long. He sad idk I just work here. Color looked ok, but the smell and taste were way off and I had to return it.
>>21943930Depends on how the producer is making the wine, there are some producers in bordeaux and piedmont that add no sulfur, only ferment naturally with indigenous yeast, biodynamic, bioorganic, sustainable farming, etcetera, and suggest drinking windows 20 to 50 years after the vintage listed on the label. Most of those kinds of producers don't bother getting their wines certified or bother advertising their wines as "natural", the clout of their label kind of just sells itself.
>>21943767I was too lazy to reply at the time but was going to say that while every criticism the anons lambasted toward natty wines held a kernel of truth, I still like em. Yes they can be bad but they don’t have to be. Luv me acetic

>>21928970Tablas is one of the few Paso producers who make legitimately good wine who *haven't* ballooned in price. I've been drinking them for the past 15 years or so, and they are consistently good (and on rare occasion great, generally the panoplies), and are really a touchstone for what central-coast (and even Santa Barbara county) rhones can and should be. While I enjoy many other Paso producers more, I don't think anyone is offering the same value that Tablas is.
>>21942520Hello fellow Saxum friend.

>>21948769Would you consider Tablas to be the benchmark for American expressions of Rhone varietals and blends?
Alcohol is fucking poison. I started drinking last April for the first time in my life and within that year I gained like 30 pounds. Quit about a month ago and I feel noticeably better and my sleep is considerably improved. I loved wine but that shit is not worth it, never again
>>21949339NTA, Terre Rouge is better and more affordable imo. I get why people like Tablas, but the wines have always felt pretty fat to mebest of the best, you could ask thousands of people and never get a consensus. A lot of people think Cayuse, best high-end that's not superlatively priced I'd probably say Pax
>>21949339I'd say Tablas is good *baseline* as opposed to a benchmark. Their wines are always competent/good and varietally correct, though they are only rarely really outstanding. But their nursery program has also been instrumental in the growth of Rhone varietals stateside, and they have always represented a decent QPR.FWIW, I would say that Acquiesce up in Lodi is the benchmark for white Rhone varietals in the US, and at a remarkably fair/low price; Sue does amazing work and really should be more widely recognized. On the red side it really is up to taste; standouts for me (for different reasons) are Jaffurs and Tercero in Santa Barbara, Saxum (and before they closed, Terry Hoage) in Paso, and Bonny Dune in Santa Cruz.
>>21939152Post of the Year. Thanks anon.

>>21964296At one point I became a 3 bottle man like a Georgian era aristocrat but now I’m under a bottle per day, thing is I’ll go 2 or 3 days without drinking and on a Friday I can polish off an entire bottle of white burg and a Nebbiolo after all by myself if the wine is good enough
>>219642962 glasses a day, usually about 2/3 bottles a week
>>21964296Zero or a bottle, but I've also limited my drinking to 2 times a month now. Can't be slamming bottles every other day.
Opening the old Brunello tonight
>>21964523jk, opening the nice rhone instead
>>21964741Pathetic. Anyways I'm having a red 22' Maranges. Delicious

These are gonna be opened today
>>21965736will the white hiding on the left be opened as well?
>>21965736Probably, it was a present, they want to get me into Scotch, but im not so sure about it

>>21939863have fun, but it's kind of a cake walk if you have basic memory skillsJust know if you think about going level 3 the difficulty curve is almost vertical
>>21966041i've heard that 3 -> diploma and diploma -> MW are even bigger quantum leaps. wonder how many people are even going to do that anymore with the industry in freefall
Trousseau tonight
>>21966146i think most employed wine nerds I meet today would rather get wset 5, 6 and so on than go the MW route
>>21965805Ya and enjoy the your mega purple pham.
>>21966255seeing as it's puglia, that's probably a natty wine
Goddamn i fucking love good Chenin
>>21966266It's a top 3 white grape ofc.

>add some random 5 euro red wine to my bolognese>try quick sup of wine, tastes bad>bolognese tastes meh as wellWhere does this meme come from that cooking wine doesn't have to be good? I understand for small dashes, but anything more and the rancid taste of cheap swill seems to ruin it.
>>21966867You’re supposed to vino bianco in bolognese, you cretin.
>>21966867dunno. cook with wine you like drinking is what I was taught
Recommend me some exotic red stuff. I like trying out new things, and I've been drinking the same types for years now. I like it dry and with tannins.
Wine is such a scam bro.
>>21966867>Where does this meme come from that cooking wine doesn't have to be good?that's the exact opposite of what everyone recommends, you shouldn't cook with anything you wouldn't drink by itself
>>21967213SaperaviSagratinoXinomavroEtna Rosso
are the wagner wines any good? got gifted an elouan pinot noir
>>21967248>XinomavroThis is exotic to you?
>>21967510they are legitimately sweet, like 12-15g/L sugar in each bottlepeople love them but if you have a developed palate you'll probably find it big and liqueury
>>21967512If you ask 100 people at random if they've ever had Xinomavro, 99 of them would say no
>>21967517Not in my country. Are you American (not hating)?
>>21967510>>21967513OH GOD, IT'S SLOP. IT TASTES LIKE BLACKBERRY SYRUP. the color is a pretty deep purple too.
>>21967213Perricone
>>21967213merlot
>opens kitchen cabinet (not temperature not moisture regulated)>takes the first white at the top of the pile YUP that's a good Canadian white Burg
>>21967537it's ackshually not THAT bad, it's just a pinot noir for zin drinkers
having outstanding bardolino
I like Bordeaux and Loire Valley reds, dry wines. Trader Joes is hit or miss but the French selection can be pretty good value
>>21967829I rate TJ wines
>>21967213>exotic>dry and with tanninsPineau D'Aunis from LoireBonarda from Emilia-Romagna (particularly anything made by La Stoppa)Sumoll from Catalunya

Sniped this gem at the Eastern European market
Aglianico from Central Coast
Thinking Pecorino
>>21968643Yo bro I'm wasted after drinking this Xinomavro and then a bunch of cocktails and shots in Eastern Yurop, but you got an Easter Yurop market? Do you have lutenitsa in there? Also, why are you drinking scam white wine, and why does Georgian wine have Greek letters on it? Unless I literlaly ca't read.
>>21970179I also found this little cat in a little forest on my way home, so I took her home. Gonna name her Mavro.
>>21970179Fuck that photo looks tasty
>>21970187Mbro you don't even understand the wine privileges we have in dirtyass yurop. The market is so oversaturated, you get super duper goodass wine for free almost. This bottle cost less than 20 bucks I don't even remember I'm so drunk. This wine bar I go to is really comfy and get have a decent selection. They're always chill too. Today I got disrespected by the owner and I lost all my aura and I'm sad as shit, but it is what it is. Can't win every time. Xinomavro is pretty good. It's a bit sweet, but also on the dry side. The owner had it as a personal bottle this one time and let me try it, and I've been bugging them to stock up on it ever since. Now it's my safe bet. Before that it used to be either some Australian feminist whatever the fuck it was, or this one Spanish Rioja they always have on deck. I've seen anon make fun of Rioja before though.
>rioja
What's the deal with Rioja bros? Is it /vin/ disapproved? I'm going to bed but I want to read your truths tomorrow.
>>21970216>>21970219Rioja is only good from select producers.
>>21970219You're basically just drinking oak outside of a handful of producers. I like white rioja tho.
>>21970224I was gonna say my producer is good but at the same time I stopped drinking it immediately after I found other bottles I liked and I've never ordered it again.
>>21970227>whiteTrash and gay and reddit and cringe. I only drink red. Fight me irl if you must.
>>21970229I'll bite your face off, cunt
>>21970246I've noticed that only cucks drink white wine.
>>21971012i worked in a liquor store for 6 months, bourbon drinkers are BY FAR the biggest cuckolds, unironically. these guys want you to fuck your wife before you sell them a bottle of pappy's
>>21971058*to fuck THEIR wife before
>>21971058Understandable, but with wine specifically, red is the chad wine, white and everything else is the redditcuck wine. Sorry I don't make the rules.
>>21971349sparkling rose is the chad wine
Left over fleurie Ya I'm thinking I'm gonna have a great night
Timorasso
>>21971951based i had one tonight, bugey-cerdon>>21971959based I’m having fleurie tomorrowfucking hivemind
>>21970219I had a crianza Rioja the other day and I thought it was great.A lot more earthy notes than fruit.Oak, vanilla, tobacco, spice, leather.Good tannins, good acidity. It’s not concentrated like a Nebbiolo so it’s very easy drinking. They are also cheap for the quality that can be had. I am going to try a reserva next and see how that goes. Definitely try a rioja, worst case you burn $20.>>21971349>doesn’t drink white wineJust say you’re lactose intolerant aka a nigger
>>21972772Brown boy is telling me to try rioja like it wasn't my frist wine. And no I'm white so I don't drink white wine.
Today I tried pic related. The guy who makes the wine was giving out samples in my local wine store. For this price it was very good, also i was happy to find some good non pfalz wine.Back in the day, Rheingau and Bergstraße did make awesome wines, but I stopped getting them since I noticed a drop in quality.
