What flavor changes does one expect from a $100 bag of beans vs an organic $6 bag from Lidl? Is it mostly for more fruit forward tastes? Is the experience not even comparable?

Coffee likes elevation. Slows down the grow, makes the cherries and seeds grow way denser. That density brings a fuckload more of the fruit acids that makes coffee tasty.
>more fruit forward tastes
You're drinking roasted cherry seeds. If you're not getting any fruit the seeds have had that acid burned out in the roast, or they were shitty low elevation beans to begin with. There's a huge gap between brazilian coffee grown in the plains without any tree cover and the shit Pepe Jijon grows in a unique microclimate like his Ecuadorian cloud forest farm. Its not a singular flavor difference, you're missing out on "complexity" by drinking bags from Lidl that just taste brown.

A manual grinder has to be the most cucked stupid ass purchase I've ever made
>Oh? This $100 grinder gives me similar quality to this $250-300 one? And I just need to put in a bit of effort?
And then I find myself grinding the night before or if I forget and I'm lazy just grabbing a red bull in the morning cause the effort this shit takes IN THE MORNING WHEN I NEED MY COFFEE THE MOST is just too much of a pain the ass
The entire minute I'm standing there grinding the fuckass beans like a faggot slave makes an electric grinder 100000000000% worth it

It's still washed, not natural processed. If you want cherry so badly, why remove the fruit? I don't believe Pepe Jijon and Luwak are the only two drinkable bean juices.

I have a few manual grinders. C40, Lido 2, Lido E, Pharos, and a HG-1 Prime. I also have and mostly use a Super Jolly for espresso and a Forte BG for filter. You're right and I warn people of this all the time.
Manual grinders are great if you are poor, for travel, or as a supplement but I would never have only a manual grinder.
So many people think they don't care about manual grinding but fail to realize its every fucking time. It doesn't matter if you have to get up super early, you're running late, you just got home and just want a cup of coffee, you have to hand grind. There is no I don't feel like it. Its even worse if you have people over and you have to do several rounds in the hand grinder just to have enough for everyone because most only hold enough for a cup or two.
>>
>>21933442
The fact that you use a forte over a c40 for filter speaks volumes.

the hg1p is probably the best as far as manual grinders go, its by far the easiest especially if you bolt it into the counter top.

>>21933671
Yeah I definitely agree with that. The pharos is probably my favorite but also the biggest pain in the ass and least used these days. No way I am messing up my maple countertop bolting either of those to it though (they are both in my dining room) I mostly use the hg-1, SJ, and Forte and then the Lido 2 for travel.
>>21933714
Its not that its difficult to manually grind. I just don't want to deal with it every single time I want a coffee or a cortado. Sometimes I just want a quick cup or if I'm brewing a moccamaster, big chemix, or pushing out multiple espresso shots back to back for guests or something like making tiramisu. Why sit there and grind out 10 different batches when I can just run it through an electric grinder in 90 seconds?
>>21933455
I mainly use a Kalita Wave 185 or glass clever for filter and it works perfectly fine lmao. Nothing wrong with the Forte BG
>>
>>21933733
>Nothing wrong with the Forte BG
Yeah Ditting did a phenomenal job on a $60 set of burrs. The problem is its a $900 grinder and you'd have to be a retard to buy one.

>No way I am messing up my maple countertop bolting either of those to it though
true but craig lyn does recommend bolting it to a heavy cutting board.
could probably rubberize the bottom to increase grip.
dark roasts are a breeze but lighter roasts require more torque which can kick the grinder, and the grinder feet need to be fully clean and the surface its on too.
i have to pull mine from its storage position out to the edge of the counter to grind it every time i use it so it picks up tiny particles which make it lose grip meaning i have to clean it more/apply more force when grinding.
holding it in place requires more energy than turning the crank, at least imo.
>>
>>21933743
It wasn't $900 when I bought it in 2014 and there were a lot less options back then.
>>21933753
I actually don't have any problems using it as is but I might see what kind of wood and stain I have in the shed. Mine is actually on my built in buffet under a built in china-cabinet (its an old house built in 20s.) and I have plenty of clearance so I don't have to move anything to use it but I might give that a try if I have I can keep it looking decent. Like I said before I mostly use the astra gourmet and super jolly that's in my home office day to day. I mostly use the ct1/hg-1 on off days or really interesting beans.

idk what to tell you dude. It was 12 years ago. I had just moved back to the US and wanted to upgrade from the baratza maestro that I left behind which had served me well and I liked Baratzas CS before the Breville buyout (which also ruined polysci) and the fact that I could easily purchase and replace the parts myself. There weren't a ton of other options at the time and I have never struggled to get a good cup of filter out of it. Its not even like I'm recommending the thing. Obviously in 2026 I would buy something else but I haven't had to replace any of my gear in ages.

With all the money you've pumped into grinders, you could easily have an EK43. Instead you're stuck with like $400 of entry level flats, the shittier robur cone, the shitty 68mm compak cone, two junk lidos, and a c40.

Here's a good one: when's the last time you got coffee from a coffee vending machine? Do those even still exist?

Remember the really old ones that had chicken soup too for some reason?
>>
>>21934712
When my grandpa was dying in the hospital I'd park myself in the 9th floor lounge, chug vending machine coffee, and watch Days of Our Lives.
>>
>>21934712
i bet there's a Moccamaster in there.
>>
>>21934712
There is something to be said about the slow death of the vending machine. Some of the best coffee I ever had was in a plastic cup that plunked down from one of those machines in a summer camp in southern France. It was the feeling of feeding those heavy coins into the slot, one euro in all, one and twenty with milk. It probably still costs the same, if that machine is still there - hell, if that school is still there. I remember drinking it in a hot, dim hallway washed in yellow light that bounced off the sticky painted walls. My hand smelled like salt and ink each time I brought the pale yellow plastic cup up to drink.

Rest stops still have them in several regional states. I think I get french vanilla if I'm that desparate. It's just hot water and some instant coffee & sugar powder blend.
Anyone, who has ever opened these things up, knows how nasty the sugar hoppers get caked up. That's why I assume dessert fast food machines are down so often. Everyone is too damn lazy to clean them out.

When I was little the college had one like the picture. It was 35 cents / tiny cup.

its 3am should i eat breakfast first or make coffee(v60) first?
OH! i said i was going to talk about a coffee i had that was good(and then forgot about it)
ill do that now.
its this and it has a pretty accurate list of tasting notes.
weird but it reminds me of when you put too much lemon on fish and chips, but in a good way.
i haven't done it as espresso yet, but its nice and buttery in both moka and pour over.
a good smooth brew :)
also i got my new burrs for the super jolly today, just genuine stock mazzer burrs as i felt i should just keep it simple(and cheap)
but i have to clean the rest of the grind chamber and i simply have no idea how to do that. so ill update on the super jolly once I've gotten past that.
should i use cafiza? like i use for back flushing. i was also thinking isopropyl alcohol, but i really have no idea.
i know cafiza sells grinder cleaning pellets but those are just for the burrs right? that wouldn't do a deep clean on grime left to sit for many years would it?
also the bottom burr carrier is pretty stuck on, im not sure if i need to remove it but its in the grind chamber so maybe it would be good to clean that as well as i can too and i dont know if i can do that without taking it out.
anyway, thanks for reading my blog.

>This hybrid method combines elements of natural and honey processing in a way we’ve personally never encountered before. The result isn’t simply a midpoint between the two styles; it feels layered, almost like adding the best parts of each. We’ve long been fans of the Wave Natural Sidras of the past—juicy, punchy, and loud, but this complex process is a unique and different presentation of their wonderful sidra trees.

Got timemore c5 few months back and it was really good, so I bought timemore scale as well and that shit broke in 3 months. Please recommend me a good scale that has a timer and won't break for years. Replaceable batteries a plus. I can spend up to $100 for it.

Issue with these type of charts is it never shows long term use. My timemore is listed there, and it ended up having constant shifting scale until it died in not even half a year. I need something that can last.

I've had my acaia lunar for 5+ years. Zero issues.
>Replaceable batteries a plus.
They replace your battery and service your scale for like $30. I haven't had to do that yet. Battery still lasts weeks in between charges. You get what you pay for. Lunar has been out since 2015. Long before the budget chinese wave of random accessories. Built for long term cafe use.

ok coffee is too expensive, what can i do about it? no, i will not get a job.
kirkland 3lb cans are like $24 and that shit dont even last makin my 12 cup pot daily, i also want to have some decaf on deck, but that's the same price too which is too much
>>
>>21940237
You need to change method. You aren't going to get coffee beans for much cheaper than that.
3 pounds is 1.2 kilos, how are you going through that in a day? 1.2 kilos would take me at least 6 weeks to get through with 3 to 5 shots per day on my superautomatic.
>>
>>21940237
why are you drinking so much coffee? you're unironically gonna get kidney disease if you drink 12 cups per day and also decaf and also whatever else you're guzzling all day. why dont you try cutting down on the coffee and supplementing your daily caffeine needs with comparitively cheaper tea bags? tea has more caffeine anyway. you can make a strong liter of tea with 5 or so bags. you can get 100 bags for $5. thats at least 20 days you can supplement your caffeine intake and stretch your coffee a little.
also drink more water.

Maybe in the future I will avoid store brand and buy name brand instant coffee instead.

Roasters are not fucking with greens. Roasters are buying greens. Producers MAY be adulterating beans during processing with synthetic/"manmade" flavorings to raise the selling price of lesser quality grows and lying to importers, who then sell said greens to roasters who redditors bitch about.

I think some of them definitely are. Dak for instance. I've had some of the exact same beans Dak uses from a different roaster and the shit Dak is pulling out of them compared to other similarly competent roasters with the same beans is more than just a roast profile. I doubt they are the only ones.
Something has definitely changed in parts of the specialty world and I don't think its just down to new processing methods.
Used to be you would get a really fruity african, fruit bombs as it were, and it would have really strong NOTES of, say, blueberry but now you get shit that just straight up does taste like, say, a jolly rancher or notes of warm spices versus straight up overpowering cardamom. We've somehow went from flavor notes to just flat out flavors.

V60 switch and an aeropress. Both of these don't require gooseneck kettles to use. Also cafec filters for the switch. People seem to like the T90 and Abacas.

The guy who uses ap filters 30+ times wasnt right about anything.

Thinking of getting a Luminous sub. Why are there so many options though and why is it so hard to read shit on there. I don't get where I need to go.

Newfag here. Thoughts on premix (3 in 1) coffee?

What hand grinders does anon recommend?

I want to start grinding coffee beans and don't want an electric one which would be another appliance occupying yet another socket in my already busy kitchen. I only drink coffee that's brewed in a press.
I have had a look online and see well reviewed ones by Comandante. What other brands are worthwhile? I don't mind spending a couple hundred Euros on a new toy so price isn't a turn off if it's actually good.

Top tier (handheld) hand grinders in no particular order.
>Kinu M47
>1zpresso KUltra
>1zpresso JUltra
>1zpresso ZP6
>Timemore x Millab 01
>Comandante C40
>Comandante C60
Kinu and Comandante are made in Europe, the rest are Chinese.

comandantes are kinda overpriced at this point. they're not bad or anything, but the ux is not as nice for what you're paying

>the ux is not as nice for what you're paying
You can throw some more money into them now and get top adjustment and magnetic catch cups from StarWave.

Take a look at the Femobook battery powered grinders. They're the best of both worlds. Cordless and about as portable as a hand grinder but with the convenience and consistency of an electric grinder. You only need to charge them once a month or so, and the batteries are standard replaceable 18650 cells.
An A5 or A4Z with a cremaloop slowfeeder will perform at a level to where you'd probably need to go to one of the $1500+ flat burr grinders to get anything noticeably better.

I have one of these, it wasn't really a good choice for me because I do pourover exclusively, and it's difficult to fit a carafe onto such a tiny surface area and still be able to read the measurement (I was using a Hario drip decanter at the time). Plus it has no thermal insulation so the heat will fuck up the reading. Furthermore, I prefer something that's USB-C rechargeable for something I use multiple times a day. I ended up getting a $22 Bagail scale, which solved all of those problems. No physical buttons, though, which is of course annoying sometimes when the timer "button" refuses to work.
>>21944163
You might look into a Coffee Gator scale for ~$25 if you don't mind having to use 2xAAA batteries.
>>
>>21946737
I mean yeah but why jury rig it when k ultras go on sale for like $200
>>
>>21947021
I also do pourovers but I do it directly into the cup so it's big enough for me. Also the batteries last such an absurdly long time that it being chargeable is irrelevant to me.

>Coffee Gator scale
Thanks anonymous. Roomy enough, I also do pour over exclusively so it might do the trick, but I don't really like the cheap buttons here either; they remind me of the two cheaper scales with physical buttons in the Hoff video.

The needing AAA's is a bummer but not a deal breaker. Sidenote, I have no idea why the fuck they thought it was necessary to generate an AI picture of a cat eating food for their amazon page. Baffling.

it makes sense in a cafe/bar when they can do it basically free, my local cafe already offers free sparkling water on tap
it makes no sense to crack open a bottle to take 2 sips
