Buy Costco coffee, they're around half the price of grocery store bags. They stock three tiers, 3lbs bulk value bags, 2lbs general quality, and 2lbs "specialty". Each tier has one Kirkland brand and one or two non Kirkland brands. The only 3lbs bulk bag coffee worth drinking I've found is the Jose Colombian Supremo in the red bags that go for $20-$25/bag. This thing is the poorfag's savior. The most stereotypical coffee to ever coffee. A dictionary definition medium roast Colombian. You can largely ignore the 2lbs general quality bags as they're usually the Kirkland french roast and some national supplier like Starbucks or Pete's. Higher price for beans that aren't any better, and in most cases worse, than the Jose's Colombian. The 2lbs specialty is interesting as the Kirkland single origins like pic related are usually the best coffee they have. But the supply is so low that they maybe get a single pallet a year. So make sure to pick up a bag or two if you come across them. They legitimately creep into the specialty coffee territory. The other bags are some smaller regional or local roasters that can be a hit or miss, anywhere between genuinely good and flavored garbage.

>NEED
for what?
to "make coffee", no.
you can piss the boiling water out your ass for all the ground coffee cares, its going to extract in the water and make "coffee" all the same
for GOOD coffee, yes you NEED a goose neck
OR you could buy a hario switch or clever dripper and do immersion brew where how the water gets in there doesnt matter at all.

Get pic related if you don't want to spend on a more expensive gooseneck. It's $10 and is enough to brew a single cup. The spout profile is surprisingly good. Boil water in the big kettle and pour it into the small gooseneck to get perfect temperature brewing water.

Newfag here. Can you guys tell me what's the difference between Arabica, Robusta and Liberica beans? Which bean is the best?
>>
>>21949506
Might try that, but I don't mind spending a little bit to make things less of a pain for my daily.
Your way would mean one less kitchen object cluttering up my cupboards though.
>>21949520
Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking at a Mellita very similar to this but that can accommodate two cups. I always make a cup for me and my wife at the same time.
>>21949461
The point is I do already have a kettle in my kitchen. A kettle I got long before I knew I would interested in pourover. I was wondering if I could use that.
>>21949282
Nice. Thanks for weighing in.
>>21949275
Why not? I've been making unbroken pours using my normal kettle so far. I'm more wondering whether the water turbulence versus the less turbulent gooseneck flow is making a difference.
>>
>>21949821
It is.
>>
>>21949821
Just get a Hoop brewer or Hario Switch and call it a day. Don't waste time on outdated methods and consumerism when those two are the new meta for consistent good coffee. You don't need a gooseneck.

Sometimes, when I make coffees, it has a disgusting taste which I can't exactly describe. Usually it's gone by the next coffee I make, but today I found my entire bag of beans was disgusting. Any research I make on the topic yields unsatisfactory results ("bad water temperature", "bad grinding size", or even "dirty equipment"), any idea what can causes it?

Looks cool. I like the way it works but I would prefer if it weren't made of plastic.
I kind of have sunk cost with pourover to the point where I at least want to be able to make a cup of coffee I really like with it before I buy yet another coffee related knick knack, you know? I will consider getting one down the line though.

The pour does make a significant difference when doing percolation brews in typical brewers like a v60,wave,etc. Not so much with immersion and atypical ones like the hoop. I have no faith in current year Melitta being able to white label a good long lasting kettle. A quality made in Japan gooseneck like a Takahiro or pic related Kalita is only around $60-$100 and will literally last you the rest of your life. A pittance for the improvement in cup quality and amount of enjoyment you'll get from using it. One of those plus a melodrip and you can really explore how pouring affects cup quality.
>>
>>21950231
It's just a stainless steel vessel. Kind of hard to fuck that up unless you're at the lowest of the low tier direct from china restamping and they're lying about the materials. Reviews say it's durable too.
I can mostly accept that there is a difference between gooseneck and a regular kettle, but right now I can't accept there is any meaningful difference between 95%+ of goosenecks. It's just getting too into woowoo territory.
>>
>>21950048
