I bought a pour over jar, grinder, filter paper and a goose neck kettle. Are there any specific types of coffee to use with this or other equipment that could add to it? Thinking of a french press.

what chemical do companies use for coffee flavors in candy or ice cream? they all taste the same so i assume there's something common about them. i can't find anything when i research for it. instant coffee doesn't taste like it to me
picked up a cheeky blend. natty process eth' and 'osta rican with some anaerobic 'lombian.
thoughts on grocery store beans? i was walking through this 'organic' grocery store and they had a decent variety of beans, ranging between $5-$15 per pound.
>>22121676are you talking prepacked or bulk? if bulk, avoid. they go stale quick in the bins and usually dont have a marked roast date so they could have sat there for months. for prepacked stuff, anything with a marked roast date within 4 weeks is going to be decent. there is a good chance your local roasters sell to grocery stores in the area so check out some of those.
>>22121731Yeah bulk. Guess the lack of roasted date makes sense.
>>22121748nothing wrong with trying some out just to see, though. and depending on your brew method it might not matter that much. if you're doing pourovers it could be good to buy some cheaper beans just to get the hang of the method and see how changing things affects the taste in the cup.there's some "how to choose coffee" stuff in the pastebin if you wanna learn more.

I was talking about moving away from my Flair and Chestnut C2 last thread. I finally went and bought an Eureka Mignon Manuale and a Lelit Anna because I managed to find both for pretty good prices, they should both arrive in a month. Funny, because I was talking about getting a DF54 and a Gaggia Classic instead. Anyway, is there anything else I need to keep in mind in order to keep my machine from killing itself other than backflushing once a month and descaling once a year?
>>22122052>Lelit Annacheck the panels and fittings when you unbox it
>>22122061Is it more fragile than other machines or is it a Lelit QC thing? I bought it through WholeLatteLove so it should have 1yr warranty in case it comes all fucked up and loose.
>>22122070its QC and they often can pop out of place during shipping
>>22122081Got it. I'll make sure to let /ctg/ know about it when it arrives. For now I'll keep on manually grinding like a schmuck and cleaning my Flair daily.
>>22122052>>22122095I sold an anon here my Kinu M47 phoenix to replace his Mignon Manuale. He is very happy. I'd also avoid 57mm Lelit like the plague. I really hope its not too late to cancel either.
>>22122156I can still cancel since I placed the order yesterday. Doubt they're gonna ship it until Monday. Do explain, though, what's the problem with 57mm? If it's about the accessories then I don't really mind it. Normcore has 57mm tampers and baskets and that's enough for me, I don't want to buy a fuckton of fancy puck prep gadgets.
>>22122173You're going from one proprietary basket to another proprietary basket(with a few more options). Who knows when normcore will decide noone is buying 57mm shit because its only on Lelit's cheapo line. I truly think gaggia+df54/64 is a way smarter upgrade route.>t. anon who went from kinu+flair signature to wug 80mm and flair 58
>>22122183If it counts for anything, IMS also has 57mm baskets. I'm also gonna buy the accessories as soon as the machine is here and I know it works, anyway, and I doubt I'll be buying more after that. Honestly I really did consider the Gaggia, but I cannot for the life of me understand why a $500 machine doesn't come with a manometer or any form of temperature control (I'm aware of Gaggimate and Gaggiuino, and I do have some experience with electronics, but I honestly don't want to fuck around inside a machine when I've never owned one before). Those were really the main reasons why I went with the Anna, that and because it's on sale. I do understand not wanting to go proprietary, though. Why the fuck they couldn't have just made it an extra milimeter wider is beyond me. Locking your customers in is an obvious reason to go proprietary but modularity and compatibility are big selling points these days. And for the Mignon over the DF54? Honestly I just did it because the DF grinders are kinda ugly. That, and I like the idea of not losing my grind setting after every cleanup.
>>22122183Oh, yeah, and I did consider the Flair 58 at some point. I still like pulling manual and I'll probably keep using my Classic from time to time, specially when travelling. But I also want to throw an espresso machine on a smart plug, wake up to a hot boiler and make a cappuccino without fucking around with a frother or external boiler, so there was no getting around owning a proper machine.
>>22122203My flair 58 preorder came with an unbranded IMS. Its the first thing I replaced with a pullman 876, then a high flow billet basket after, then stepdown and convex baskets. They all make very different coffee and its handy to have options.>Why the fuck they couldn't have just made it an extra milimeter wider is beyond me.They can. It's called the Glenda. They charge a few hundred extra for it. Fuck em. I'd be furious with that shit on my counter for years.>And for the Mignon over the DF?Burrs burrs burrs. Eureka make shitty italian burrs. Could be perfect for your caps though. All preference, but again 50mm proprietary with access to the same shitty replacements. Not what I'd be buying.>>22122213>But I also want to throw an espresso machine on a smart plug, wake up to a hot boiler and make a cappuccino without fucking around with a frother or external boilerLiterally what I do. $20 switchbot on the flair58 controller flips it on 10 minutes before I wake up. Turn on kettle, take piss/shit, pour milk into Dreo Baristamaker, pull shot. Cappuccino 3 minutes later without having to fuck with a steam wand.
>>22122220>GlendaHaven't heard of that one before but shit, you're right, it's just a 58mm Anna. Doesn't seem to have the same availability as the Anna, though.>Eureka make shitty italian burrs. Could be perfect for your caps though. That was part of my considerations. I'm not a fan of char roast but I barely drink anything lighter than medium these days. I think shitty italian burrs sound like a good match for my shitty italian-style 'presso. That, and I've survived off a C2 for years. My standards aren't that high at this point, if it's stepless then it's good enough for me. I've gotten pretty good at dialing by weight because with some beans the C2 gets into that situation where a click finer chokes the Flair and a click coarser makes soup (Slop or underextracted piss). That said, I didn't even want to go with Eureka OR the DF at first because I keep hearing that conical is the way to go for dark and full bodied. Unfortunately, the Fellow Opus 2 is too plasticky and the Timemore Brick is apparently not that good. Could've gone with Baratza, but I went with flat burrs in the end just to try something new (And because an anon last thread swore that Baratza is e-waste).Also fair enough on your morning routine, doesn't sound too different from what I'm trying to do. Piss and shit should come after coffee, though, that's non negotiable.
>>22122246>Lelit- We gimp our customers on purpose! You could check out the new chinese conicals. Starseeker e55 pro. Fairly popular on EAF discord.>And because an anon last threadTheres about 2 somewhat intelligent posters here if you haven't figured it out yet.
>>22122266im one of the 2 right?
im definitely the second one
I'm the third of the two.
>>22122246>C2 gets into that situation where a click finer chokes the Flair and a click coarser makes soupI'd be buying one of these to try before wasting money on a mignon.
I'm not one of them because I keep failing this shitty fucking captcha holy shit. I'm half convinced that it's failing me on purpose because I can't be THAT retarded.>>22122266>StarseekerI think I've heard of it before. Kinda hard to keep up with all these new chink manufacturers popping up left and right.>2 somewhat intelligent postersWe have intelligent posters? I thought all we did was shitpost. Then again, I don't come here that often. Also I'm exaggerating on anon being a reason why I didn't buy a Baratza btw. Like I said, I wanted to try flat burrs for a change and couldn't get over the looks of the DF.
>>22122280Huh, didn't even know aftermarket grind plates were a thing. I'm ready to move on from manual grinding, though, the C2 will remain my backup/travel grinder. If I'm unsatisfied with the Mignon then I'll just go with the DF or whatever new chinky grinder hits the market.

>>22122281The Mignon is fine. Their regular espresso burrs are good at making traditional shots. And the 50mm brew burr is very unimodal according to the Coffee Chronicler. What you need to do though is to remove the declumper in the exit chute as it causes a large amount of retention. Adding a tilt stand and bellows to that would make it more or less zero retention. Also I've always wondered if adding a little lithium grease to the end of the bottom of the motor axle that contacts the grind adjustment arm lever might reduce friction and wear at that point a bit.

>>22127250if the grounds don't stay in place then it's too fine.
>>22127250Same as any way of making coffee; if it's bitter, grind coarser; if it's sour, grind finer; if it's sweet, don't adjust.
Went to a different store than my usual yesterday. They only had these two and another Kenyan for filter, usually I prefer non-Kenyans. Had the Ethiopian this morning and it was pretty good
