The new take on Remus' characterization took some getting used to, but now I think it makes more sense that the OG fanon interpretations. I love the way the author expanded on the world of HP by adding so much werewolf lore. Remus honestly felt more worthy of being a protagonist in that story than Harry ever did in his. Although, I felt pretty underwhelmed by the ending. The OC overstayed his welcome, imo.

I've only read Wolfstar as a sideship but most of the time Remus was an introverted "everyman" type of character while Sirius was more rebellious and hedonistic to complement him, similar to early fanon you mentioned. Though from personal observation,, as a main ship their portrayals seemed to 180'd. In early fandom Remus was often the soft wimpy guy who just followed his friends' whims and Sirius was the badass and now it kind of looks like Remus is portrayed as more masculine and headstrong while Sirius is flamboyant and gets the edgy manic pixie dream girl treatment. Personally I'm not a fan of the latter for Sirius

I'm not that deep into the modern wolfstar fandom, aside from loving that fic.Unfortunately, I don't think SBP holds up quite as well as I wish it did. The beginning of the fic especially is kind of a mess. It was written by two authors, and meant to be disjointed, but I found it kind of hard to get through on a re-read. Perspective shifts frequently, there are long sections of only dialogue with no blocking to clue you in to who is talking, and the third chapter is just straight-up copypasta of Poe's Tell-Tale Heart for about half of it's length. It also has some of my personal pet-peeves for marauders fics, like a cruel, uncharitable depiction of Peter, underplaying the bullying, and kind of hand-waving away how serious (heh) Sirius' betrayal of Remus was with the Snape fiasco. The humor is subjective. I thought it was hilarious when I read it, but your mileage will vary with taste.I do think some of the later chapters hold up, I assume because one of the authors started to take more creative control of the work. And it became a fandom staple in the late 2000s/early 2010s for a reason. It's probably better than 95% of fics you'll find out there (not a high bar). But especially if you're not a fan of the traditional fan interpretations, I don't know if you'll like it. It's quintessential chaotic bad-boy Sirius/meek softboy Remus (which I still quite enjoy).
