Go-Bots doesn't get enough credit for being one of Hanna Barbera's best cartoons of the 80s. Once you get beyond the stigma that it's a "Transformers Ripoff" (which it was never intended to be, both shows were developed independently based on different pre-existing toylines) the animation is fluid, the art direction is fantastic, the writing is entertaining and exciting, and the voicework is superb.

Wanna know how nasty Cy-kill is? He once shrunk the entire population of earth and put them into some glass globes and used them as hostages. When things weren't going his way, he simply crushed one of the globes and casually snuffed out 1/5 of the human species. it was a fake. The real globes had already been rescued, but Cy-kill didn't know that

It was interesting learning that the Rock Lords were also from the Machine Robo line. However, the 80's kid in me still kinda sees robots turning rocks as a bit of a downgrade compared to robots turning into vehicles, man-made objects, and wildlife, but at least some of their designs were decent.

As for that GoBots Rock Lords movie, the last time I last watched it was on home video in the late 80's. While I barely remember much of that movie now, I do think it would be have been better off as a 5-part episode in the GoBots show. I felt GoBots' 5-parters were one of the show's strengths and HB probably could have gotten a bit more mileage out of the brand without the financial hassles of a theatrical movie release, especially with several toy commercial movies flopping in theaters at that time.

Pic kinda unrelated, but I find it in a desuarchive search earlier and thought it was be cool to post it here.

I don't get why The Hub died. It had so many original series, exclusive 3rd party shows, and imports that hadn't aired in the states prior or atleast not on a notable network prior when it launched and then it just died

Here's something that's hilarious. The Pastel Pony Pals show was riding a tidal wave of viewers and support, but the retards at Hasbro didn't make any video games for it, while G5 got 2 multiplatform games despite being objectively worse than G4. And despite G4 being better than G5, G5's movie, while alenating the bronies and being only on streaming, never getting a physical or theatrical release, was WAY better than G4's movie. Figure that shit out.

it was a rebrand of an existing Discovery channel, Discovery Kids, which Hasbro bought a 50% stake in; they still own the stake, but it was rebranded again into Discovery Family after four years

basically:

a channel for kids relies on advertising

ad revenues for tv had been dropping for years across the board as advertisers went online (at this time, in the early 2010s, Facebook was still deepthroating adcock like the massive whore it is, while telling everybody that they'd get massive amounts of engagement and views on FB - which turned out to be untrue, but basically destroyed the independent news, comedy, video outlets that had existed before then)

since hasbro owned 50% of the hub, other toy companies didn't want to advertise on it since they feared they'd be sidelined or simply not prominent among shows that were themselves ads for hasbro products

hasbro's big seller transformers is generally aimed at small boys, but the hub's programming generally was seen by hasbro as being aimed at girls so they felt their flagship shows weren't getting the airing they deserved (there's some irony here in that they probably know about horsefuckers with large amounts of disposable income to spend on hasbro products, but they also don't want to put that in their financial reports to shareholders)

this made the channel unprofitable, so hasbro decided to reduce their stake to 40% and let Discovery run the channel

At what point in the show did Homer officially become a bad husband and bad father?

He was always kind of an asshole even in the Golden Age of the show (seasons 2-9). Then the seasons immediately after start playing up his jerk tendencies.

But contrary to what people believe modern Simpsons actually has the opposite problem where they seem afraid to make Homer look like too much of an asshole to Marge, Bart, Lisa or Maggie. Hell, even Flanders.

>fox news apparently says it's "woke" to not strangle your kid
Bad interpretation. Being against censorship of the DEPICTION of a [thing] is not an endorsement of [THING]. That's like saying if you're against censoring violent video games it means you must be for killing people.

They're not saying it's okay to strangle kids,. The point is people don't want to see Simpsons censoring themselves. And in the case of Fox News their issue is that it comes with an undercurrent of "times are a changing" so things that used to be okay are now offensive, which we already saw happen with the Simpsons regarding Apu.

And the Simpsons itself was already mocking hysteria by people trying to tell other people what they can't do under the guise of Helen Lovejoy's famous "WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?" line (which is basically what the strangling Bart critics are doing). And if anything as the wife of a Reverend she'd fit more with a parody of 90s moralizing right then current day moralizing left. They also had an entire episode about moms trying to censor cartoon violence in regards to Itchy and Scratchy. So Simpsons shouldn't be censoring what they've been doing for years regardless of what political spectrum the complaints are coming from.

With the more modern books, 2000s Marvel and DC was cape comics trying to be "more mature, for real this time", and a lot of stories that were dark, super-serious, and imposed 'permanent' changes. From the early 2010s onwards the industry went full retard on wokeness, and as polarizing as that is, there are people who'll fight to the death to defend every single moment of it.

The 90s Extreme era being the industry in the hands of a bunch of guys mostly in their 20s and just trying to make cool, exciting, sexy fun action comics for an audience of kids and teens annoys the hell out of the people who want their cape comics to be deep and meaningful and attempt to be Art with a capital A, or to deal with "issues".

A lot of the problem is that the people bitching about 90s comics at the time were just older readers who should've just grown out of superhero comics and moved on, shrieking about what those damn kids liked, and largely those are the people who stuck around and wrote the narrative of what happened and what you're allowed to like.

>90s fags don't have to defend The Crossing. They don't have to defend the Clone Saga.
To be honest, both of those events actually do have some good ideas and cool new characters in them, which are just sadly overshadowed by the one big really awful idea in each of them. And even then, there were mitigating circumstances going on behind the scenes for why a lot of the bad stuff happened, none of it was just some star writer out of control, like a lot of the later awful stories were.

For example, once you know that Marvel editorial in 1995 were desperately trying anything and everything to get attention on their books and stop the execs from outsourcing their titles to Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, you know why the bad elements of The Crossing happened, their backs were against the wall and they were desperate. It's a lot easier to be forgiving about something like that than it is about the things Marvel and DC pull in later decades just because a writer wants to leave his permanent legacy on a book.

And adaptations generally know to leave unpopular older stories alone and not go near them, but unpopular 2000s and 2010s events are "important" and everyone seems to think the "have" to adapt them.

Is /co/ old enough to remember Family Guy Mania (2005-2008)? It was one of the biggest cartoons back then with video games, toys, t-shirts, music albums, Oscar performances, Youtube video with millions of views and quoteable lines.

It briefly overtook SpongeBob in popularity as it started it’s seasonal rot after the movie.

Storyboards intended for the NostalgiaCon table read:
https://www.guymooreanimation.com/portfolio-collections/collection_0f809c/gknd-nostalgia-con
>For his first convention appearance at Nostalgia Con in Houston in 2025, Tom Warburton, creator of the television series Codename: Kids Next Door, decided to do a live table read with four of the original series' main voice actors, performing a new script for "Galactic Kids Next Door"-- his take on what might have happened to the kids of Sector V in the time following the end of the original series. As he did for the original GKND stealth social media campaign (discussed elsewhere on this site), he tapped me to create all the art for it, again in secret. There wasn't enough time to make a full animatic, but the idea was that I would capture certain key moments and visual gags, and that this media would be displayed on a big screen for the audience during the panel, either by itself as a backdrop, or with the voice actors narrating it, as appropriate.
>Unfortunately, the Nostalgia con turned out to not only lack a big screen, but any screen at all... so the panel performed the table read by themselves, and none of the art or animation was shown. That's show biz, I guess.

He and Castor had a solid comedy duo dynamic especially for their era, they came before Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello which is pretty huge, and had a respectable roughly decade long run before Popeye started to take over. But that was a literal hundred years ago so that span of time feels overwhelmingly insignificant now, kind of puts into perspective just how many shows people obsess over now that don't even run for ten years in their entirety will likely be viewed in another century, if at all.
