Everyone can recognize Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman because their designs and concepts are perfectly embalmed into public consciousness. And it doesn't stop there. DC has always been the better of the Big-2 when pushing the cornerstone of how comics should be written and interpreted as. So many writers were brought over and gave us stories like Sandman, Animal Man, Watchmen, Swamp Thing, the Vertigo lineup, etc. Marvel just can't compete.
