He's horny for goth chicks, he's not tall, he's not muscular or fat, and his character trait doesn't really inform much of his character in the show, so he doesn't fall into the trap of say, Courtney slowly becoming more and more just her 'trait' (that being an A-Type). For reference, Cody's trait is basically being a poser if I recall. Like, he thinks he's super hot shit, but that's only because he talks to mathaletes.
And aside from being an everyman, he was really popular with the early female fanbase. TD's creators were baffled.
