I'm more of an /a/non but I fucking love ArchieLet me peek into what the west was like before I got to experience it.
hey sugar sugar
American Ecchi slice of life broIts really great, look up Dan DeCarlo and Bob Montana they had the best art.Its not deep but its not supposed to be, its just campy fun stuff
a lot of the atmosphere is really dated but I find that charming and retrothe main themes never change, and that makes it timeless
the girls are def the best part (betty best girl btw) but the boys have their own appeal.the concept of reverie is big, but it will often take a back seat if the opposite sex isn't in the picture.betty and veronica are friends, until archie is in the picture, then they're "frenemies" and i think the same could be said for the boys too.
>>143277039He is literally me
>>143277039based
>>143277056kek.I like Archie
jughead is the crowd favorite because the opposite sex doesn't interest him. this means he gets to deliver a lot of the jokes, usually at the ugly girl, ethel (they made her less ugly later, which is funny in its own way)
jughead is the original sigma male
>>143277057So true
Where do I get started with Sabrina?
>>143277057>>143277064Like I said, the themes are timeless
>>143277111I straight up do not know. I like Archie, never got into Sabrina or Josie and The PussycatsI liked the animated show for Sabrina, but that's about it (her boyfriend stored dirt in his cargo pants pockets and kept worms in the dirt and thats all I remember from the animated show lol)
>>143276727another thing archie doesn't get credit for aside from having most of the comic revolve around getting bitches is the natural integration of black characters (lmao)
To make a long story short, it had a great run as a children's comic - with literal pin-ups in it - drawn by guys who drew for playboy etc and that's rad to me
I'll post some more of the full page art and leave the thread up, I love seeing the old stuff, and there's so much of it. I recommend ordering something like "The Best of Archie Comics" (I think its free on kindle) or "Archie's Favorite Comics from the Vault" they're really cheap and they've got a lot of fun little stories. I collect the floppies from the 60's-70's when I find them in antique stores or comic shops (why do comic shop staff laugh at me when I say I like the vintage archie comics?)
betty is so smart and thriftyshe really is best girl

Archie is so facinating, for most of its life it was just a goofy SoL romance comic And now the company actively hates itself and its own bread and butter, in a fight for it to stay relevant with "relatable" mini comics, and clickbait horror books
>>143278850>And now the company actively hates itself and its own bread and butterJust like certain other comic companies
>>143278850>And now the company actively hates itself and its own bread and butterWhat do you mean? They still release SoL romance stuff consistently.

>>143278150When does the tickling begin?
>>143277412From what I've heard Riverdale seems like a bit of a disappointment. There's a lot of potential in the Archie setting. There's a lot of ways to go with it, one could turn it into a serious romance plot, continue the rom com, do something weird and dumb.I hear the Riverdale show turned into some kind of Supernatural pastiche. Now, something odd like that sounds fun, but it's also like serious in tone. Which is just kinda dumb.If the show is to be silly, go silly, if it's serious it should be fully serious.
>>143279848Archie is the world's only fictional character to have been sacrificed to satan

>>143301062Not the first time they'd tried that, among other things there was that magic hatpin nonsense, but it wasn't really well received on any of the attempts. Not sure why they kept trying to do that but, considering at least one attempt came in the '70s, there's a chance it was an attempt to head off gay jokes since that was when jokes about tomboys being lesbians and asexual men just being gay started taking off.

When it first started they did a lot of other stuff and the comics were more violent like Betty would be a cook and thrown out of the kitchen by force or some other comic would end with Betty and Veronica waiting outside jughead's home with baseball bats. There were also a ton of new side comics with characters that would be dropped pretty quickly. The longest lasting would be Sabrina and her family, and josie and the pussycats who managed to stick around and are often not in Archie's harem. They also sometimes do stuff with Betty and Veronica that have nothing to do with Archie. Like one time Betty had multiple personality disorder and an uncle that was a vampire Riverdale is actually a pretty weird place and I'm really surprised hard right conspiracy theory Christian mothers have mostly ignored Archie comics because it might be the oldest US comic with witchcraft. >>143329210Archie comics play pretty loose with lore. Betty also has a vampire uncle and no one has heard from him in ages. It's far more episodic than they want to admit and there probably never was a Riverdale Bible. And if there was, it would be pretty high level

It’s scanned and easy to find online, pretty sure getcomics has it.
>>143284771>>143330688He’s pretty clearly not that well trained as an artist. He can draw and recreate all the necessary shapes, but without the proper understanding of how they’re all supposed to fit together. It’s why he almost always draws their faces at the exact same angle, because it’s what he knows best. Unfortunately, because of that it’s easy to notice that sometimes the eyes, nose and mouth are a bit off. I wouldn’t outright say he’s horrible, his art is serviceable, but he’s a far cry from the talent that came before him.
>>143329313Thanks for letting me know about that story (Sabrina Annual Spectacular).I always had the headcanon that Alexandra's magic always backfires because she likes the Pussycats even though she can't admit it, so any time she tries to hurt them it backfires on her. There's one story where she actually uses magic to help Josie and Valerie and it works fine, so it sort of fits.

>>143333706Yeah, he clearly doesn't have the technical knowledge that previous Archie artists did. One other thing that bugs me is how the clothes look in Parent's work; older artists like DeCarlo and Crane pretty clearly drew the bodies first and then went back drew the outfits so they conformed to the outlines of the body. If he's not drawing the girls in a bikini, Parent seems to just draw the clothes first and then the rest of the body. So legs sometimes don't quite match with hips and thighs the way they should and the clothing doesn't hang on their frame as naturally as they did in DeCarlo's art.

Is any of the more modern material any good? I remember seeing a Sabrina series from a few years ago that had cute art
>>143335633According to my research that's Archie Comics 636
>>143278850Archie (the mainline titles, not the specials) has consistently paid some of the lowest page rates in the industry, with their artists either hoping to be discovered elsewhere or there out of nostalgia.By the 90s, most of AC's cash came from Sonic, which died in the fire that destroyed Ken Penders' contract. An insane heir to the company becoming public knowledge, and the sharply declining income had the company downsize into a shoebox office suite that mainly exists to coordinate reprints of their 80 years of work-for-pay content with next to no editorial or art department any more. I'm predicting one of those Canadian IP farms that snaps up older properties like Peanuts or Strawberry Shortcake will buy them out in 5 years or less, diminish its value even further then sell it off at a loss to someone who shuts it down.
>>143309433>Note that the pin-up idea was suggested by "Josie Dumont," aka Mrs. Dan DeCarlo.Fantastic
>>143329027>Of course no one making these comics and stories had any idea why kids liked this music but this seems pretty good natured and funny about the generation gap.I love that aspect of Archie comics. It's so tiring to just be endlessly shit upon by the worst generation for decades upon decades just for existing and not putting up with their outdated antiquated bullshit.
>>143327898>>143327937Thanks for posting these, I'll look more into his stuff
>>143328985idk chief its a little cringe but fun sure
>>143332834this book is on sad panda site
>>143277057he isn't you
>>143335855Credits are kind of a mess in the original comics, and so many stories also get reprinted in different places so unless you're willing to dig, it can be a headache. I've got both of the Best Of volume for Lucey, so here's the table of contents for them. Hopefully the writing here is legible, since it's got the issues and story names, which is handy because issues usually have multiple stories, but not necessarily the same artist on all of them. Scans of single issues should be easy to find from there.

>>143338834Seems to be all right.
>>143338834>>143338848And now after trying to find the proper page of the girls fighting, it's from The Choice and stated to be in Archie 223, but turns out it wasn't. It's from Pep 172. Archie 223 is the only one of them all from the 70s, so hopefully that's the only wrong one!

>>143329369Smug Sabrina is best Sabrina, I love her so much bros
>>143338834>>143338848You know, it's amazing how prolific Frank Doyle was as a writer for Archie. Choose any one comic from the 50s up to the 80s, and odds are he wrote it. You had other ones like George Gladir that did a lot of stories too, but nothing to Doyle at his peak.
Bedtime necrobump
>>143336974DC should just buy it and make Riverdale some suburb to Gotham. DC already has the same magic rules

>>143335855>>143336310There's a good Silver Age and Golden Age collection that was put out in 2017 and 2018 and ripped a few years back. GetCo might still have working links. The Silver Age one would be a lot of Lucey.>Best of Archie Americana - Golden Age (2017) (webrip) (Forsythe-DCP).cbr>Best of Archie Americana - Silver Age (2018) (webrip) (Forsythe-DCP).cbr>>143325685>one big book of essential Jughead or Betty & Veronica comicsThere's a few "Best of Archie's" that are 400 pages (or about twice the size of a digest) and I know for sure one features B&V so I suspect there is one for Jughead.I don't know that it's essential stories and I don't know that Archie ever put stuff out in Hardcover so it's collectible to OWN. There's also a batch of Archie Giants, some of these are also in the 480 range but there's at least a few that are 1000 pagers, but again these are paperbound as far as owning them. Many of these have been ripped, so you can at least look for and download them and see if you want to BUY a particular volume.
>>143346434> 1000 pagers paperbound.Doesn't that mean pages will be coming loose very soon?

>>143319759Jesus fuck, the Zeo Transformation Autist is just as bizzare to me as Murrlogic (The Wonder Bread guy).
>>143347177Hmm, I guess it depends on how you take care of your books. I got in the habit of checking out physicals from my local library branches because I was living in a tiny studio with no space for things like my own books, and a few have some of those DC Showcases, which are essentially 300-400+ pages of B&W reprints with paperback covers, and many of those looked okay - beat up but as far as coming apart no. It's essentially like old phone books if you lived in a large area like NYC or LA. I know people who buy TPBs who get them bound, so you could do that?

>>143343056Yeah, Doyle was a machine, I don't know how he did it, especially when you consider that Archie scripts were storyboarded (you can sometimes tell who the writer is just from the layouts) and he doesn't seem to have reused a lot of scripts and even the weaker ones are at least well crafted.Sadly Doyle died in 1996 when no one had bothered to interview the Archie creators. There was some renewed interest in them around 2001 when Dan DeCarlo sued Archie over the Josie rights, but it was too late to know what Doyle thought of his work.
>>143336974>By the 90s, most of AC's cash came from Sonic, which died in the fire that destroyed Ken Penders' contract. And this guy who drowned Archie in licensing fees for his big Sega/Capcom crossover before jumping ship to DC.
