Last Spider-Man thread wasn't too bad, and the resident schizo seemed really stressed out and gave up before he could spam the last one to the bump limit again. Let's have another one, then.

I don't know if it was cunning foreshadowing or just bad writing, but Paul's kids were weird, man. They always came off as creepy and autistic homonculi more than actual children. More likely they just didn't know how to write kids, but if that's the case the reveal that they were fake was an entirely unintentional master-stroke on Zeb's part.

Whereas Peter's kids in Ultimate come off as actual human beings instead of soulless NPCs. For reference.
>>
>>143290842
>>143291366
...Given how suspicious Peter came off as in issue 3, and the concerned Ben and Jonah gave each other then...

Do you think May ends up accidentally revealing Peter's identity to Ben?
>>
>>143291378
*concerned LOOKS Ben

>>143290795
Also while I'm tinfoiling I noticed Harry's eyes are green, which in 616 isn't his natural eye color. Are his eyes green in 6160 or is he already high on dad's Goblin serum?
>>
>>143291386
desu they can never keep the Osborn eye colors straight. Norman has had every eye color known to man. >>143291386
>>
>>143291366
Wait, what has Richard done in three issues? He always appeared to me as just being there.
>>
>>143291447
He reads books and has a personality. Even had a conversation with May about how she shouldn't feel worried about Spider-Man.

That's honestly more than I can say for either of Paul's kids.
>>
>>143291378
I get the feeling that Hickman is gonna go down the no secret identity route.

>>143291302
I love how Paul looks different in like every fucking issue, radically so. Some issues have him look like a ludicrous bara tumblr fag drawing crossed with some pulp engineer man and others make him look like a nerdy dweeb. It's insane.
>>
>>143291705
I mean he even says himself he can only be technically that strong for about 3 seconds before his suit burns out. It's a measure of maximum physical strength they can achieve without special conditions or equipment.
>>

If Howard Stark and Wilson Fisk were involved, it's a given that Norman was involved.

It's probably why Harry is so clued into them from the beginning. He knows the people his dad was talking to.

The fact that they wrote him off as collateral damage shows he wasn't a very big player or involved in anything especially heinous though.

>>
>>143295596

>>
>>143295640
But not spoiled.
>>
>>143295663
616 Harry wasn't psychotic, just naive and high on goblin serum.

6160 Harry is a straight up Vigilante Unabomber and immediately moved to trying to kill Wilson Fisk with explosives. That's definitely way more dangerous and decisive than any other version of Harry.
>>
>>143295681
That's solely a matter of personal perspective, rather than objective fact. The line between spoiled and sheltered is a matter of semantic quibbling.
>>
>only daughter of an (at least) upper middle-class police officer who fathered her at an older age
Gwen was 100% spoiled
>>
>>143295691
I disagree with this I for one found 616 Harry to be rather psychotic, him making fake parents of peter's dad and mother showed how much psychotic, he was.
>>
>>143295731
She's also filthy rich in Ultimate too, and casually talking about assimilating Stark like it's nothing. She seems very type A like Harry, whereas Peter and MJ are more working class mindset kind of people. MJ's a feisty gal with a startup, Gwen will fucking annihilate you if the shareholder report doesn't meet expectations.
>>
>>143295748
Marvel is incapable of consistent characterization and every author has wildly divergent takes. No consistency.

Forget about Harry, nobody can decide on just how good or bad someone like Dr. Doom actually is.
>>
>>143295790
Yeah bu the thing is people do like Dr. Doom despite that but 616 Harry gets no love from anybody.
>>
>>143295844
I like him. I hope 6160 Harry ends up getting softened by Peter, and the fact that they're actively collaborating with each other even past the first arc if issue 7's solicits are any indication is interesting.

Hiya, retards. I stopped reading Spider-Man years ago because of the deteriorating writing and editorial competence. I read the earliest of the original Brian Michael Bendis' run on Ultimate Spider-Man but dropped it when it went to dog shit as well. Then, I began reading Miles Morales-- and only enjoyed the first four issues; after that, he is only an actual character in his own right in the first Spiderverse film and for part of the PS4 game (in other words, he's wasted potential, a squandered nothing-burger floating on the veneer of the cultural zeitgeist).

Now, I stand at the crossroads of nostalgia and skepticism, pondering whether this new Spider-Man series offers the redemption I seek. I've read a preview in which the opening was in the 'Spiderverse' in which this version of Parker talks to a council of Spider-Men. It was rather weak. Does this tone carry over into the rest of the run?

Please tell me if this is actually good. I do not want to spend money on garbage comics again.

No no, that had nothing to do with this current run. That was just an unrelated 616 comic Hickman wrote many years ago as a one-shot, with people going 'yeah Hickman writing Spider-Man long term would be interesting.'

I like it a lot. How long it lasts is an open question, but the fact that it's outselling the mainline books means it won't be going away anytime soon. It's a pretty straightforward, down to earth, and personal story with an older Peter Parker who is married and with two children. There's a lot of high concept stuff in the background, but you really don't need to know much more than 'they whole world is secretly controlled by a supervillain illuminati.'

>>143295864
USM is bullshit-free so far, a much needed breath of fresh air.
There is a bit of lore if you want to know why this universe is the way it is, but you can honestly just jump into it and start reading.
>>
>>143295928
I love high-concept stuff, especially if it is in the background. So long as it is befitting for the story, and that the story feels like a genuine Spider-Man comic, namely one not written as if by spiteful Redditors for the last two decades.

>>143295934
Again, I understand there is lore seeing how this is yet another universe, but am glad to hear that it is so far ‘bullshit free’. What really worries me is if, despite the lack of the usual Modern Marvel Standards, the writing is of any quality.
>>
>>143295864
HickULT has been pretty solid so far. Peter acts like an adult with a sense of humor and has a good relationship with his family, but yearns to make a difference without hurting them. The background is easy enough to understand even with the Hickman autism (tl;dr incel Reed Richards keikakumastering while puppeteering a random assortment of people to secretly control the world) and you get some neat stuff like Uncle Ben instead of May being the focus of the B-story while also having a nice bromance with Jonah and Harry taking on the mantle of the Goblin out of revenge, yes, but to also to do some good.

We're not too far into the story so it's hard to judge it fully, but it's given hints of some interesting things that'll happen and with every issue so far skipping a month in-universe, it doesn't stretch events out longer than necessary.
>>
>>143295864
Nigga shut the fuck up with your holy than thou "Look at me I'm a skeptic but nostalgic" bullshit.

Either read the first issue and decide if you want to give it a chance or don't.

Hell you can fucking pirate the first issue and decide if it's something you want to buy.

God damn lazy piece of shit

I just can't bring myself to hate Chasm or Hallows Eve. The Wells run has been dogshit for a number of reasons, but conceptually I can get behind both of these ideas.

I take more issue with Queen Goblin, which is a stupid name to begin with and yet another Green Goblin pretender (I personally don't care for Hobgoblin, I'm sorry). Like, if we're pulling this shtick, why use Doctor Kafka instead of Emily Osborn (who was revealed to be alive at the tail end of Slott's run)?
>>
>>143296328
I kind of want Ben and Janine to keep the powers but be good guys instead. The entirety of Clone Saga is 'mistakes into miracles.'

Just let Ben become Spider-Man meets Ghost Rider.
>>
>>143296328
I think all three are terrible ideas, but you do you I guess.
>>
>>143296328
The Chasm and Hallows' Eve costumes are so good, I really enjoy them, but yeah, if you'd just made them good guys that just like using a dark theme for their outfits, it would fix a ton of things
>>
>>143296328
Chasm doesn't work for me because they literally introduced a fix in Dark Web with Jean giving her memories to Pryor.

But then Peter just...doesn't do it.

They introduced a solution and then didn't use it, and in the letters page even admitted they only used Ben as a favor to someone else and didn't know what to do with him.

It's retarded because Chasm should not logically exist. But now they can dangle the idea of him being fixed in front of readers the same way they dangle Peter and MJ getting back together.
>>
>>143296283
Why your feelings hurt bruh? You don’t even know this fool
>>
Just move 616 Peter out of NYC and reboot his cast. Its all ruined anyway.
>>
>>143296351
>>143296367
I'm fine with both remaining dickheads personally. Though temporary alliances with Peter to deal with a problem is acceptable.
>>143296375
Technically Ben shouldn't even exist in the first place but that's a whole other conversation I won't get into
>>
>>143296328

MJ: "Oh thank God, I thought you'd never ask."
>>
>>143296539
(You). Again, the run has been dogshit.
>>
>>143296471
>I'm fine with both remaining dickheads personally.
Janine's not too much of a dickhead imho, and Ben's problem is no one giving a shit that his memory could be fixed very easily, he'd be not so much of a dick if that got solved.
>>
>>143297278
It's just this absurd plothole that we're not meant to even acknowledge. It would be trivial, and it's the only reason Pryor is sane. They just shafted Ben for no reason.
>>
>>143297429
I'd forgive them if they'd made the smallest of efforts and said some shit like Ben's mind is too broken to fix or intervening would make things worse and he might lose his entire self. Then at least you'd have an excuse. Right now they're just ignoring the several elephants in the room
>>
>>143297987
or just something like "Jean Grey could copy over her mind safely because she's a telepath, but her doing that for Peter and Ben could leave Peter braindead."

Instead, nobody even bothers to ask. We're left fumbling for excuses for the writers.
>>
>>143296328
Ben being Chasm is retarded and shits all over his character.
Janine being Hallow’s Eve is retarded and shits all over the ending of Redemption plus it continues the dogshit trend of every character getting powers
>>
>>143298750
I don't know, I do like the idea of Janine's belief that turning herself in would be her redemption was a mistake, and she should have stayed with Ben rather than get stuck in prison for bullshit. Don't think they've explored that properly though
>>
>>143298750
Ben's character left much to be desired, and Janine's power is actually pretty badass.
>>
>>143292989
>>143292996
I really like this Gwen. Reminds me of the 616 version were she was first introduced. Until they made her too perfect for Peter. Had this been the Gwen Stacy then she would definately fit 616 Peter well

>>143293013
Well damn. Hope this Harry stays a hero. Peter could use an ally, & it would be a good twist that a Green Goblin becomes the hero with Spider-Man instead of being another villain like every other versions
>>
>>143299085
Per solicits, he's a hero for at least three more issues.
>>
>>143299098
Well that would be a stupid thing to do, & it would take away more original ideas the series needs. Harry should stay a hero, & lt Kingpin take other the role. Hell, involve his son, The Rose, to fill the evil Harry role
>>
>>143299163
My point is that we don't see him become a bad guy even past the first arc. Which is again, interesting. I like him as a more edgy antihero too.
>>
>>143298768
It just feels like an antithesis of what JMD was trying to do with that ending. Stop running and own up to the past which just ends up with Janine in prison forever. Then they've spun that into Janine being a piece of shit enabling Ben's psychotic episodes instead of getting him real help.
>>143298789

You can, but don't act like me dismissing it is such an insult. Your whole argument is "I don't care about these characters but their powers/costumes are cool, so I don't mind what has happened to them". Which is fine, I don't care what you like or don't like.
I told you why I believe Ben and Janine have been done incredibly poorly by these decisions and you dismissed me by saying Ben is a bad character (with no justification provided) and that Janine has cool powers (missing the point entirely).
>>
>>143299987

then he probably contracted for 18 issues since that was the amount of time Hickman himself set up in Ultimate Invasion for the current status quo to last it's two years but Ultimate Spider-man starts Six Months after that
>>
You can always rely on Marvel milking what sells into the ground.

But the good thing is Ultimate Spider-Man is simple, down to earth, and easy to make into a serial series. It's not Hickman's fault the main office keeps deliberately fucking up the easy layups.
>>
>>143307615

>>
>>143307682
see
>>143307676

Marvel is happy to pay for something that gets more money in their greedy little hands. Fortunately this is a book that's actually worth buying for once.
>>
>>143307638
Not from hickman's perceptive he wants to be paid more money for his work on it but marvel is unwilling to do so. Thus it being canceled is only a matter of time.
>>
>>143307763
Why is Marvel unwilling to do so?

Look how thoroughly they milked every other big success into the ground?
>>
>>143307834
They figure it's the live-action action movies/shows which make the real money, while comics are just small potatoes compared to them. That why they are unwilling to pay him more for his work.
>>
>>143308012
The comics division is its own thing. The TV and movie people barely care, but the only reason ASM is carrying around right now is 'because it sells' and USM is in fact, selling more than that.

The worst case scenario is that Ultimate gets milked well past the point of being good ala the Krakoa Era, which started off strong and ended up sucking. But by comparison to Krakoa, you don't need nearly as much effort or oversight to keep USM good. It's not a high concept book that reworks the entire mythos, it's just an older Peter Parker with a wife and kids. It's genuinely hard to fuck up, short of doing OMD 2 for Ultimate.

And they have no reason to OMD 2 Ultimate because that's part of what makes it different from 616 in the first place.

The other possibility is simply that Amazing Spider-Man shapes up and knocks it out of the park again with stories that are better than Ultimate's, but I don't think our current Spider Office has it in them, and even if they eventually pull it off it won't be for a long, long time.

>>143310628
Nah, it was going to happen regardless of whether Peter got his powers or not. Him being Spider-Man is not contingent on whether she eventually drops the party girl persona. The journey was definitely different but the outcome was the same.
>>
>>143310628
So you mean to tell me that MJ would just be a party girl forever and would never ever mature and become more responsible. There is 0 chance of that happening because Peter wasn't Spider-Man... Alright man if you say so XD
>>
>>143310569
Queen Goblin tells Ben that she can restore his memories with the machine that made Ned into the goblin. Janine chases Peter and Betty until they convince her that they've been tricked and Ben's in danger. Then Peter fights Queen Goblin while Ben and Janine escape. And then Ben and Janine have a moment. The tease at the end is the Sinister Six talking about taking down the Living Brain.

Thanks. I feel ASM could be a quarterly book and the storytelling pace wouldn't change at all.

>>143310849
Oh, so it's pretty much filler.

If anything, the powers were an obstacle to them getting together, simply because she didn't like being involved with Spider-Man. Their relationship probably went even more smoothly in this version.

The reason people love Doctor Doom is because he's a full blown Saturday morning cartoon villain maniac in a world where all the villains who used to be this are now sympathetic or straight up hard evil.
Doctor Doom is STILL referring to himself in the third person, blowing holes in walls to enter rooms, manufacturing narcissistic robot armies, and being a petty asshole to Reed Richards. He's one of the few Marvel characters who still acts like a traditional comic book character.
>>
>>143310849

Peter should just get Reed to build a memory machine and give it to Ben, there's no reason why he HASN'T done this in the two years that Ben has been brain-addled. Are we meant to infer that Peter genuinely doesn't care about the wellbeing of his brother?? Because that's the story Zeb seems to be telling me.

>So you mean to tell me that MJ would just be a party girl forever

Wait. Isn't that what Slott and other people on the BND crowd insists MJ should be?
>>
>>143314787
Yeah, pretty much.

But, we've known since the 80s that it's just a front for her insecurities. She's basically very similar to Peter in that they both grew up under bad circumstances, just in opposing ways. Peter grew up withdrawn and misanthropic, and generally only had May and Ben. MJ couldn't rely on her family, so she pretended to be a social butterfly to receive validation from others, but always got freaked out when things stopped being superficial.
>>
>>143314907
>>143314787
>MJ now trapped in exactly the same scenario as her mother and her older sister, where she has to give up her dreams and ambitions for the sake of an unhappy marriage and children.

MJ would not have gotten together with Paul in the first place, but would also not have stayed with Paul just for the sake of these two random and ultimately fake kids.
>>
>>143314974
>>143290806
MJ with Peter in both 616 and AUs: doesn't give up on her ambitions, has a life outside of Peter, and that being married and with kids actually gives her the strength to do the things she wants to do rather than preclude it.

MJ with Paul: Doesn't seem to have a job or really any life outside of Paul and the kids, seems depressed rather than happy, has decided to become a vigilante like Peter out of guilt and grief rather than do anything she actually wanted to do as a kid despite knowing damn well it's a misery spiral given Peter's life.

Guys I cracked the code, Zeb Wells just really fucking hates MJ as a person.
>>
>>143315036
asm is just his outlet for his divorce
>>
>>143315369
It's hilarious to me that Joe Quesada wasn't divorced, but everyone assumed it for OMD.

And then Zeb Wells came out with the most bitter divorcee run of all time. Not even PAD can compete.
>>
>>143312829
I can't wish enough harm on Lowe and Wells. Holy shit.
>>
>>143315036
In basically every run but the current one, MJ did have goals and ambitions beyond being a generic love interest. She's actually married to Peter in 6160 and she's still taking a big risk and shooting for the stars.

This is the only run in the last twenty years that treats her like such a complete and utter prop. Even Dan Slott decided that she had a life outside of being a cast member in Peter's drama.

A lot of people are arguing that being separated from Peter is giving her agency, but she really isn't doing anything besides being Paul's roommate and being Jackpot. And like you said, even Dan Slott's MJ (the second worst MJ after Wells') would have hated the idea of being a vigilante given how miserable it was making Peter, and thus by association her.

>Well damn. Hope this Harry stays a hero. Peter could use an ally, & it would be a good twist that a Green Goblin becomes the hero with Spider-Man instead of being another villain like every other versions
I think it'd be neat if they remained partners and friends and that rather than splitting over one small schism in ideology, the two are able to compromise. Harry becomes less bloodthirsty and kill happy, while Peter acknowledges that sometimes you just run into a dog so rabid and violent you have no choice but to put them down.
Like Harry avoids killing every random mook and sane villain, but Peter looks at a totally irredeemable sociopath like Cletus Cassidy and agrees "Yeah. This one needs to get put down."
>>
>>143318974
I honestly feel that strict “no-kill” rules are kind of too much. You shouldn’t just kill every petty criminal in sight, but some people are bad enough that you have kill on a case by case basis.
>>
>>143319018
From a narrative perspective, all you need to do is show that your hero isn't a violent psychopath who is just waiting for an excuse to take a life, even if it's a villain's.
>>
>>143318974
I don't think Peter should be okay with killing villains but he's friends with enough killers in 616 that I think he should be able to grudgingly acknowledge that this is a thing Harry does sometimes without making Harry an enemy.

This isn't 616 Peter. This Peter has lived a radically different life. I feel like if he ran into a situation where MJ or the kids were put into mortal danger and the only way to gurantee their safety was lethal force, he'd not hesitate. Any man worthy of his family wouldn't hesitate to kill some scumbag to protect his loved ones, and Peter Parker wouldn't be any different. 616 Peter only had a no kill rule because marketability.

Name: Peter Benjamin Parker

Age: 28

Occupation: High school science teacher, freelance photographer for the Daily Bugle

Role: Protagonist

Backstory:
Peter Parker has always been a brilliant but sarcastic and street-smart individual. Having lost his parents at a young age, he was raised by his loving Aunt May and developed a strong sense of responsibility and a desire to help others. As a teenager, he gained spider-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider, becoming the masked vigilante Spider-Man. Over the years, Peter has faced numerous challenges and losses, including the deaths of his close friends Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborn, and his daughter, Mayday Parker. Despite the tragedies, he continues to fight for justice and protect the people of New York City while navigating his personal life and career as a teacher and photographer.

Personality Traits:
- Sarcastic and witty, often using humor to mask his emotions or deflect from serious situations.
- Street smart and resourceful, relying on his quick thinking and ingenuity to overcome obstacles.
- Protective and loyal, especially towards his family and those he considers friends (e.g., Mary Jane, Aunt May, Normie and Stanley Osborn).
- Confident, sometimes to a fault, which can lead to overconfidence and a tendency to act impulsively.
- Short-tempered and mocking towards his enemies, often goading them during battles.
- Trust issues, finding it difficult to let people in due to his past losses and traumas.
>>
>>143323941
Physical Appearance:
- Age: 28, appearing relatively young for his age with a youthful face.
- Height: 5'10" (178 cm), with a slim but athletic build.
- Hair: Brown, often worn in a casual, messy style.
- Eyes: Hazel, alert and sharp, often narrowing when suspicious or focused.
- Dress sense: Casual and comfortable, usually wearing jeans, t-shirts, and hoodies. When in his Spider-Man costume, he wears a red and blue spandex suit with webbing designs and a mask to conceal his identity.

Strengths:
- Enhanced physical abilities, including superhuman strength, agility, and reflexes, allowing him to perform incredible feats.
- Scientific expertise, with a deep understanding of chemistry, physics, and biology, which he utilizes to create new inventions and gadgets.
- Quick thinking and adaptability, able to think on his feet and come up with creative solutions to problems.
- Strong sense of responsibility and dedication to protecting others, always striving to do the right thing.

Weaknesses:
- Overconfidence can lead to mistakes and underestimating his opponents.
- Short temper and tendency to act impulsively, sometimes causing him to make rash decisions.
- Trust issues and difficulty in opening up to others, which can impact his personal relationships.
- Moral dilemmas: Struggles with the consequences of his actions as Spider-Man, often questioning if he is doing the right thing.

Goals:
- Protect the people of New York City and ensure that no one else has to experience the losses he has endured.
- Find a way to balance his life as Peter Parker and Spider-Man, maintaining his relationships and career while fighting crime.
- Seek justice for the deaths of his loved ones, especially those caused by Norman Osborn.
>>
>>143323954
Fears:
- Losing more loved ones, especially Mary Jane, Aunt May, Normie, and Stanley.
- Failing to protect those he cares about, feeling responsible if anyone gets hurt due to his actions or inaction.
- Being unable to stop Norman Osborn and other villains from causing harm to the city and its people.
- The potential discovery of his secret identity, which could put his loved ones in danger.

Additional Notes:
Peter has a large roster of villains he faces, including Mysterio, Hobgoblin, Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, Doctor Octopus, Vulture, Chameleon, Electro, Shocker, and Lizard, each posing unique challenges. He also struggles with the fact that Norman Osborn wants him as his heir, finding the situation bizarre and uncomfortable. Despite their rivalry, Peter refuses to hate Norman, seeing similarities between them that he dislikes.

Overall, at age 28, Peter Parker is a complex character who continues to evolve, dealing with adult responsibilities and the weight of his past while trying to make a positive impact as Spider-Man.

It has less things to say and it's more inaccurate but it's still better than ASM. Tho that's not saying much.

Name: Mary Jane Watson

Age: 28 years old

Occupation: Model, Actress

Role in the Story: Protagonist

Backstory:
Mary Jane Watson, often known as MJ, had a traumatizing childhood, suffering at the hands of an abusive father. She watched her mother and sister endure loveless marriages, which further impacted her view of relationships and love. Pretending to be a care-free party girl, she masks her true emotions and the pain of her past. MJ is a strong, independent woman, but her traumatic history has also left her with a complex personality.

MJ blames Norman Osborn for the deaths of her daughter, Mayday Parker, and her friends Gwen and Harry. Norman's presence and power evoke the trauma of her abusive father, creating a deep-seated anger and desire for revenge within her. Despite her blithe exterior, MJ cares about people and has a close bond with her boyfriend, Peter. She struggles with empathy, often realizing her mistakes only after someone has been hurt emotionally by her actions.

Physical Appearance:
MJ is a beautiful young woman with vibrant red hair that frames her face. She has blue eyes that can shift from playful to intense in an instant. Her look is distinctive, and she is often the center of attention, whether she intends to be or not.

Background:
MJ had a tumultuous upbringing, with an abusive father and a mother who struggled to protect her children from their father's wrath. On a personal level, she strives to overcome her traumatic past and find true happiness and love, hoping to break the cycle of loveless marriages she witnessed growing up.

Fears:
MJ fears becoming like her mother and sister, trapped in an unhappy marriage. She is afraid of losing those she loves and being unable to protect them. Her greatest fear is that she will never truly overcome the trauma of her past and that it will always hold power over her.

Seconded. If you're going to permanently brand yourself with some actual comic artwork of Norman, go for one of these.

I'm not sure it's Lowe agreeing to that. It might be upper management wanting a comparison between the two books themselves.
