In the books, fairies only live for a very short amount of time. There's this unstated but sad feeling in the book that Peter can never truly have friends or enemies or memories, because he forgets everything constantly. We think of Tinkerbell as Peter's loyal fairy and Hook as Peter's eternal rival, but by the end of the book, Peter has no idea who Tinkerbell or Hook are, he's forgotten them completely. He has new adventures on his own even while with John, Michael and Wendy without them, and forgets he's had them. A big point is made that whenever Peter experiences dishonorable play, it deeply shocks and takes him off guard, because to him it's always for the first time and then he forgets it, incapable of retaining memories or becoming traumatised. It seems the only thing that piques Peter's curiosity and makes him want to leave his timeless loop is girls, which is why he treats Wendy much more kindly and is a bit fascinated by her. He makes a special point of telling her that if he forgets, just keep saying her name, and then he'll remember her. When Peter meets Wendy's daughter at the end of the book and flies away with her, there is a strong feeling that Peter does this constantly with new girls and never remembers any of them.
