The impression I've always gotten is that it's not the pymaric hardware itself, it's the ghosts inhabiting them. Duane is like this too, actually, and not just when he's awake: The reason "he" goes zombie crazy when asleep is explicitly because his soul falls into the khert at night and all that's left over is the "normal" infected zombie body (what we saw way back when they were in that town during the "Miserable Drizzle.")I don't think Sette can just take over any pymaric that's still uninfected, it's that she has some command over ghosts and the coincidences of history have resulted in very powerful magical artifacts very frequently being possessed by those.
