In fact, I'm fairly sure that the "purgatory" retardo theory came about almost entirely because of that. Kids hanging out with the same pool of kids with no parents around made sense in the summertime, but when you have to go out of your way to hide adults and any other characters in a setting where it makes sense there'd be throngs of people, then yeah, that's odd, so the show was kind of coming apart at the seams but it didn't last long enough for that to become a problem. Pretty much the moment the weirdo world of the show started getting too strange to support itself, the show ended and we got the movie.
