Kung Fu Panda 4 still made over 500 million in an 85 million budget (less money spent than Inside Out's budget) and was the third highest grossing movie of the year for half of it. It didn't do badly just because Inside Out 2 exploded.

What you don't realize is that Pixar is stuck in sequel hell. Their new original IPs after Coco aren't doing so well afaik. They can't rely on milking their successful movies forever.

And I would also like to add that Dreamworks is guilty of it too. Hell all the leading animation studios that make successful movies are guilty of it, the worst being Illumination.

It's kind of a pot kettle black situation because Dreamworks was at the forefront of making it their stated company goal to build franchises they can milk for many sequels, it just took them a while to hit Shrek and they had a bit of a slump where nothing seemed to be doing well enough to warrant a bunch of sequels.
