Is Avenue Q /co/?
Now "that" song is stuck in my head.
>>144308811puppets are /co/
>>144308830CAUSE I DON'T GOT THE TIME TO WASTE ON YOU ANYMORE(BA DUM DUM DUM DUM)I DON'T THINK YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING FOR
>>144308830if you were /co/
>>144309018That's be so-so
>>144308811>roommates clearly can't stand each other>erm, actually they were gay for each other afterallThis doesn't feel realistic to me
>>144309778Only one of them was gay, Nicky was straight.
>>144308843This. Cartoons are puppets.
>>144308830Everyone’s a little bit racist sometimes, dosent mean we go around committing hate crimes.
/CO/ IS FOR PORN/CO/ IS FOR PORNJUST DRAW A DICKAND MAKE IT CLICKFOR PORN PORN PORN
>>144308830>>144309835FOR PORN
>>144308811Is Patsy May?
>>144309778It was a parody of Bert and Ernie.
>>144308830Yes
>>144308811The internet is for /co/! The internet is for /co/!!
>>144308811You know, as someone who only had exposure to the songs as a kid, I'm surprised by just how much good shit I completely missed because I assumed that Avenue Q was just songs and didn't realize it was an actual musical with in-between segments. Lot of great shit that I missed because of that. >"Yes, I believe that my friend Rod is a closeted homosexual." >Turns around, Rod is there>"I SAID MY FRIEND ROD HAS AN UNDESCENDED TESTICLE!" Also the Bad Idea Bears being characters at all. They just don't exist in any of the songs at all, which is weird.
>>144308830Right now you are down and out...And feelin' really crappy...
>>144308830The Hellsing version.
>>144309778It's a Bert and Ernie parody, I thought that was obvious.
>>144311125Same boat bruv
Good thread
I half expected them to change the Gary Coleman role as the show went on. Not for any gay moral reason but just to keep the joke a little fresher or to spice it up. The fact that he's Gary Coleman specifically doesn't have any real effect on the plot.
>>144308830OH I WISH YOU COULD SEE MY GIRLFRIENDMY GIRLFRIEND WHO LIVES IN CANADA!
>>144311201In foreign countries, he's usually replaced by Michael Jackson because Coleman is only culturally relevant in the states
>>144308830I’ll remember that song based on mid-to-late 2000s YouTube. I miss that era of YouTube
>>144308811I wonder if this show aged well. I heard the songs and they made me laugh all those years ago, but I wonder if they'd feel a little too Reddit now. Then again, saying it's okay to be a little bit racist might not fly today.
>>144311125The bears play a minor role in the Loud as the Hell You Want song.
>>144311215Michael Jackson feels like a not so perfect choice, because the joke is that it’s a washed up down on his luck hasbeen who has fallen into obscurity and been reduced to being a janitor, and while Michael’s life had its ups and downs, he still died super rich and famous. I get why they wouldn’t want it to be Coleman if nobody in the audience would know who that is, but there’s gotta be better choices than a perpetual super star like Michael Jackson.
Skeeter had to make ends meet after her royalties from the 80s Muppet Babies dried up.
>>144308811I love the show, but I don't like how Princeton actually gets the money. I'd prefer it end with him failing.
>>144311602The joke actually is that the Michael Jackson that was active at the time isn't the real Michael and that "Black Michael" actually ran away to Avenue Q while "White/Pale Michael" continued his career for him
>>144308830written by one of the writers for Frozen's songs
Yes. So is Avenue Jewhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOq97zaBhko
>>144312273>sharom! i convelt fol gleencald!>Lazar Wolfe, you're a feygele?>I'm a lonely man, Tevye...>what do you do with a BA in Yiddish? Who the hell majors in that?lol
>>144311201The joke is that he's a child actor from a very wholesome sitcom who in real life got almost literally fucked in the ass hard and became a bitter and vulgar adult. It fits perfectly with the theme of an adult sesame street where everything is not as wholesome and perfect as it seems.
>>144311674Not at all. I'm Hungary, it's a white guy playing him because good luck finding a negro who speaks Hungarian. The joke is that he faked his death to live on Avenue Q
>>144308843Even Thunderbolt Fantasy.
>>144312273>Hugh Jackman's really good but has he ever sucked diiiiiiiiiiiick?
>>144312450See, that sounds like it fucks up the character’s backstory too much to where it doesn’t fit the role that’s supposed to be filled. The whole deal with Avenue Q is that everybody is stuck there because their lives suck. But then you have one guy that abandoned fame and fortune to actually choose to be there? It screws up his introductory song where all the characters agree that even compared to them, his life is by far the shittiest. I guess it would kinda suck if Michael went to all the trouble to fake his death only to find out he didn’t like living on Avenue Q after all, but I dunno if that puts him on the absolute bottom of the totem pole compared to the rest of the cast like he needs to be.
>>144311201Outside of localization, I'm honestly glad they didn't. To me it would seem like they were trying too hard to stay relevant.
>>144313559Yeah, it’s already a pretty intentionally dated production, what with the racism song, the closeted gay character, the drunk sex, and the references to early internet. It was never intended to be timeless so it’s not necessary to update any of it.
>>144313839>the drunk sexOh yeah. I forgot you're not supposed to do that anymore.
>>144313936Not if it’s with a woman, at least.
>>144308830You can be as loud as the hell you want when you're making lo~ve!
>>144313283You have to keep in mind that even a lot of the lyrics wouldn't work in other languages, anyway.I used to work as a localiser so I'm always taking notice of things that would have to be changed in order to make sense in another language or culture. One thing I remember in Avenue Q was the joke where Gary "can't even get a taxi." To most English speakers, particularly Americans, the joke is obvious: cab drivers avoid picking up Black dudes. To someone from Szeged, this joke wouldn't land because he simply wouldn't know that but if information so that line would have to be changed wholesale.I worked on, for another example, localising Family Guy for my country. A lot of the 80s references had to be altered to refer to Japanese cartoons we had at the time because things like He-Man and Thundercats didn't exist for us back then. Weirdly, Mayor West in the motel room watching Jem was left pretty much intact, only the lyrics of the theme song were changed.
>>144314066>a drunk woman can't consent>but a drunk man can???If she was drunk and he wasn't, then maybe. But if they're both drunk, why is the man to blame? What if she initiated?
>>144314722>cab drivers avoid picking up Black dudesWas that it? I thought it was a joke about him being too short for them to see him.
>>144313559>>144313839i'm kind of amazed no one has called for its cancellation yet
>>144314802It’s what we call a “double standard,” anon.
>>144314828Yup. That's why it was in the song "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist," ya dingus.
>>144314834The guy who directed it, Richard Lopez, went on to make Book of Mormon with the South Park guys. I think he gets a pass for being edgy even though Avenue Q is the farthest thing from edgy
>>144309847>>144311152Who also aren't gay and one cannot stand the other
>>144308811Yes
>>144316682There have been jokes about Bert and Ernie being gay for decades. That’s why their parody has one of them being gay. Parodies often have similarities to their originals but aren’t 1:1 parallels. Rod not being able to stand Nicky the way that Bert can’t stand Ernie is a similarity the two pairs share.
