Honestly the thing with Gwen and MJ is that the writers making the first one to be Peter's GF while the second wasn't expressly for that made Gwen flat.MJ was in the background, but she existed as a character, while Gwen just repeated the same boring "I hate Spiderman for some dumb reason" or "you missed [thing] I hate you now" superhero GF plots that had been done to death with Peter's previous girlfriends already.So they killed her off for drama without caring much, and put MJ in her place. Of course, the fact that comics are as they are meant that writers would go on to redo the tired GF plots with MJ instead and flatten her too, so now she was the boring one again, so people wanted to replace her with anothe waifu that existed more independently like Felicia, unaware that the cycle would just repeat.
