>Kids cartoon gets an adult continuation
>Show is now filled with blood, cursing, and sex
>No one ever comments how things suddenly got real raunchy between episodes 52 and 53

Not just Samurai Jack. Applies to stuff like Young Justice, and X-Men '97, and all that.

>between episodes 52 and 53
it was 50 years later
>>
So we have to assume that off-screen the world was always that violent but we saw the less violent moments
>>
>Pic unrelated
>>
>>144332425
can you watch samurai jack anywhere these days?
im not sure i ever considered it a 'kids cartoon' tho
id be curious to watch those ones if i havent already.
>>
>>144332503
I guess you could consider it for kids
But definitely give it a try
>>
>>144332425
Pic unrelated, right?
>>
>>144332425
Anon, you have to understand. "The show grows with you" thing these continuations do is so that people don't ask why adult men are watching the same old kid shows from their past. Ask yourself, do we still watch Sesame Street after all these years? The answer is no.

>First few episodes have Jack murdering living, humanoids, and attempting to commit ritualistic seppuku

Stuff the original never touched.

>>144332550
It's just a weird and interesting cognitive dissonance. You can have characters whose harshest language in the original was "I will DESTROY you," (while never really 'destroying' anyone), and then suddenly committing crazy, psychotic acts of violence in a continuation.
>>
>>144332425
The adult continuation was bad because it didn't have gay, saw sex.
>>
>>144332503
Unironically I don't think gen alpha kids have the attention span to sit through the quiet walking scenes in almost every episode
>>
>>144332592
Yup, you're right. The tonal shift is uncanny.
It's there to tell you something is wrong.
The "writers" and fans who try to rationalize it are also wrong.
>>
>>144332747
Scaramouche getting dick in his throat wasn't enough?
>>
>>144332805
I was only joking, that actually happened?

At least I can accurately compare it to APC, thanks anon.

bro I just watched some on hbo max today

thank you!!!!!!!!!

>No one ever comments how things suddenly got real raunchy between episodes 52 and 53

Did you watch the fucking show? That's one of the reasons jack is like "oh shit" after slitting that girl's throat, cause she bled red.

samurai jack wasn't that bad of an offender, it got a little more graphic, but that can be forgiven in my opinion since the tone doesn't change. what i can't stand is when the characters start cursing. young justice, timmverse and adventure time being the examples that piss me off. the characters had certain ways of talking and now cause the age rating went up they decided to add words the characters have never once used before and fuck up the feel of the show
>>
>>144332425
Samurai Jack didn't have sex and cursing, just blood and it was done tastefully with deaths being offscreen. You are such a baby.
>>
>>144334102
Same with Xmen '97, wtf are you complaining about OP.
>>
>>144332592
>It's just a weird and interesting cognitive dissonance. You can have characters whose harshest language in the original was "I will DESTROY you," (while never really 'destroying' anyone), and then suddenly committing crazy, psychotic acts of violence in a continuation.
TV censors prohibited them from going all-out.
>>
>>144332592
I think it can be done well in moderation. Jack killing the first sister was very meaningful because it felt out of place.
>>
>>144332592
Samurai Jack is the exception since you could always feel that was leaning there.
>>
ok i just watched 52 and 53
there is nothing outside the norm for samurai jack here, nothing like op suggests, and any comments about robots vs people is the point of the episodes. jack goes out of his way to repeat 'just nuts n bolts' or some shit.
op, return youre based card.
you dont deserve it.
unless you are speaking about hazbin hotel.

Even back in the early 2000s, while it was considered a kids cartoon, it was considered one more for tweens. Sam Register even mentioned in an interview back before Teen Titans came out that he was aiming for Teen Titans to be aimed at a slightly younger audience than Samurai Jack, Justice League, and many of the anime they aired
>>
>>144332592
Anon the sepukku is nowhere close to the worst this show has touched upon, even in the original seasons. Like, this is the same show that had this shit.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=5gijJcZwAX8
Compared to THAT, season 5 was downright tame.
>>
Bump cause I like SJ
>>
>>144334253
Yeah samurai jack is weird since it only seems tonally different for like two episodes or so then it gets bored with that and just goes back to normal
>>
>>144335236
I watch shit like Moral Orel and Final Space, so I'm used to tonal shifts.
>>
>>144332425
>Show is now filled with blood, cursing, and sex
Not really. Except for the higher killcount, the scat robot assassin saying someone's head looks like a penis, and barely any blood or sex (Save for Ashi being naked and covered in ash), most of season 5 was surprisingly tame.
>>
Jack never killing an actual living person was the dumbest plot point possible the guy was trained by several warriors and the subject never came up or happened? He persisted in a future of constant fighting and they were always robots?
>>
>>144332425
I don't care
>>
>>144335639
Jack vs. the Bounty Hunters also very heavily implies that he killed every single person there. Felt like they forgot that.

In Samurai Jack's case, his hope (innocence) was lost with his sword. His samurao code was set aside, and he no longer held back. This fall from grace and subsequent return to it was the point of his arc.
>>
>>144332592
>Stuff the original never touched.
Correct, and that was the entire point of the first few episodes is that it was the first time (somehow) he killed a human and not robots. Samurai Jack is one of the few shows where it leaning into the more adult themes worked tonally because they didn't have Jack saying the fuck word all the time and killing humans willy-nilly. The only part I wasnt a fan of personally was the romance with Ashi. But even so the sexual aspect was played as a joke in the episode and they stuck mostly to it being a romantic relationship and not a strictly sexual one, when in other shows they would've had Jack fuckin and truckin nonstop
