Just started watching Dr. Katz, this really is a proto Home Movies between the acting cast, writing and humor, and the imrpov pacing. Home Movies exchanged the celebrity comedians for an overarching episode narrative and relevance linking scenes more. It's not just the Squigglevision, a show like this feels like it couldn't exist in 2024. Sure Smiling Friends brought the akward realistic back-and-forth dialog style back but I can't see modern audiances feeling comfortable without a strong story, hell my zoomer gf feels like Home Movies is too dry without enough events happening, can only imagine what her and similar modern audiances would say to Dr. Katz. Still, I'm enjoying the ride, and the weird interactions, like Home Movies, have a genuine feeling behind the thick sarcasm, which is a wonderful dissonant balance like a sweet and tart flavor. Anything else of John Katz's works worth checking out?
Holy fuck, are zoomers allergic to paragraphs?

>>144339685Curiously I wouldn't have watched Dr. Katz if not for my own zoomer gf's recommendation, despite knowing about its existence for ages. I don't think she's into Home Movies though whereas I've been a fan for a while
I never watched this show but I remember it being parodied on Arthur. I'll check it out.
So is Katz a judgemental and irritable guy but masks it super well, or does any pose with him slightly furrowing his brows betray his cool and collected demeanor? It flip flops between both being believable
Tell me about your fetishes, Anon.

>>144339685It's Johathan Katz when he's firing on all cylinders, plus a long line of guest comedians who play the patients which makes it fantastic. Home Movies had some great jokes too, but I like to tone and delivery of Dr. Katz a lot better. Vastly higher gag to laugh ratio with Dr. Kats.
>>144339685Dr. Katz is (for the most part) comedians doing stand up jokes. Home Movies is retroscripting improv. Dr. Katz was first but Home Movies is more influential, it turned the naturalistic dialogue into a formula based on banter instead of pre-canned jokes. Smiling Friends isn’t even in this sort of tradition at all, it’s more like Family Guy (non-derogatorily) where improv is reserved for unexpected “real” uncomfortable/awkward moments. Life and Times of Tim/Ten Year Old Tom on HBO is a better modern example.
