>>144583390RIGHT?I hate that shit. They take one glance at something and start proclaiming that a character is one way or another, when they barely know anything about them or the property they're from.At a glance, they'll say that two characters are gay for each other, or that someone's "obviously" ace, or autistic, or trans. Pick your pride flag stripe/color/shape, there is someone who will try like hell to project their own flavor of abnormal onto a fictional character, even if they have to ignore that character's ENTIRE history to do so."Oh, you mean Marcie and Patty both spend half their time in the strips either pining for Charlie Brown, talking about how much they like him, or being upset that he's hung up on other girls? Clearly they're in lesbians with each other."If you do this, it is most definitely a personality flaw, and I guarantee it is one of the reasons people can't fucking stand you.Given the religious proclivities of Charles Schulz, the social mores of the era in which he grew up, it's safe to say he didn't include that shit in his strip. The further back in the strip you go, the less likely any of that nonsense becomes. His big move was including a black character, and he put it off because he knew nothing about being black, and didn't want to come off as patronizing toward black people. He was certainly not pairing Marcie and Peppermint Patty off as a lesbian couple. Some people need to face the fact that if it's outside the norm of a one man and one woman, heterosexual, relationship, it's not going to be in these older franchises, much less celebrated. It wasn't usually talked about, it wasn't accepted, it was rarely even tolerated, and it certainly not in strips that started in the 1950s.When homosexuality did start showing up on TV, it was usually as a comedy gag (let's all point and laugh), or it was part of some "very special episode." Most comic strips still wouldn't touch that kind of thing for a decade or so, if ever.

However, I can only recall one time where not getting a pop culture reference actually got in the way of a joke (in that comic, Charlie Brown met a girl who claimed to be the granddaughter of a fictional baseball player from a movie, and the joke doesn't work if you didn't already know that said baseball player is fictional). The references to current events are usually general enough (pic related) that they can still be understood today. I actually think the historical references are a feature of the comic rather than a drawback, since it lets you sort of experience 1950 - 2000 culturally.

Although Snoopy is still an interesting character before his WW1 Flying Ace persona gets introduced, it adds a whole fantastical dimension to the comic while also adding more of that Peanuts' edge that makes the comic so good. But as time went on and the comic changed to have a more cynical tone, Schultz has to adjust them to the mean girls characters in order to keep up with the changes, which is why Violet seems to fit the role a bit better on her own; the arrogant rich girl could still work well, while Patty became more of a snarky girl-next door for her solo appearances. But then Lucy popped off and fit the bullying spot perfectly, while Marice and Peppermint Patty fit the sarcastic girl and girl next door much better for the 80s onwards (there's a reason Betty was written as a tomboy during this time), and Schultz was basically forced to faze them out since you can't expand or focus on secondary characters too much in a gag-a-day comic unless you want readership to drop. It's still a bit sad I feel. I still think Patty and Violet could work on their own done right with being relegated to just "the mean girls", but sadly the Betty and Veronica of Peanuts just weren't able to get the focus needed and git left by the wayside.

To be clear, queer coding is a real thinghttps://www.dictionary.com/browse/queer-codingdone to get around censorship. If you're gay, you can see the signs real easy and they're pretty obvious, even though straight people generally won't know what the fuck you're talking about. Most queer coding is intentional, and does in fact mean the character is queer. Now Peppermint Patty is 100% queer coded, but in this case it's accidental. Charles Schultz based Patty on his cousin Patricia Swanson, who was lesbian, and gave her a bunch of the same quirks and characteristics, which queer people identified as very obviously gay, Charles himself probably had no idea that's what he was doing, and didn't intend Patty to be gay. In fact he downplayed her tomboyishness later when lesbian groups started identifying with her.But yeah, people aren't making up headcanon. Queer coding is real, it's usually intentional, and if it's not intentional, it's probably because some old guy didn't even realize what they were doing.
>>144616179Doesn't change the fact that Peppermint Patty and Marcie are canonically straight. Anyone who says otherwise is engaging in wishful thinking. And being an annoying twat.
>>144614677My favorite special is Charlie Brown's All Stars (1966). It has lot's of great jokes and a good emotional beat at the end. My least favorite special is Happiness Is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown (2011). People online seem to like this one, but I think the flash animation is really ugly and off-putting, even compared to the cheapest direct-to-video Peanuts specials. It also has really awkward pacing and voice acting. I haven't seen any of the Apple TV specials, so I don't know how those stack up.My favorite character is probably Lucy, especially when she's at her most aggressive in the 60s and 70s (she becomes more dumb and mellow towards the end of the comic). Not only is she really funny, but she also has some interesting parallels between herself and Charlie Brown (they both suck at baseball, they both have unrequited love for someone else). I like how the comic hints at Lucy being just as big of a loser as Charlie Brown, except instead of succumbing to self-loathing like Charlie Brown does, she instead takes it out on the people around her.Pic related is one of my favorite arcs. Sally has been hinted at being brutish before, but this arc takes it to an absurd level.

Or are you trying to say there's a "straight tomboy" erasure? Because no, that's stupid
>>144617740>Is there actual canon that says they're straight and not bi?Gee, other than the fact that they were only ever written showing interest in guys? How about the fact that we know the author, and Schultz was not about to write about gay and bisexual children, even if he bore them zero ill will?I know that, in your damaged mind, that means the door is wide open to claim that there were ball-gags and key parties going on, offscreen, but the fact of the matter is that he didn't say they weren't bisexual because he didn't need to.Also, the whole "prove a negative" thing is a shit-heel move. We're talking about a traditional (and I mean old timey traditional), Christian, man, who created the bulk of these characters in the '50s, AND HE WAS WRITING ABOUT CHILDREN, YOU WEIRDO!The fact is, Peanuts was completed when the creator died. What was on the page at that time is what there was to see and know. If he didn't tell you a character was bisexual, they weren't. If he didn't say they weren't, they still weren't. Any speculation you do is groundless and has no basis in the Peanuts setting; it's wishful thinking to fulfill a fetish or to supplement a need for belonging or acceptance that either your peers/family didn't give you, or can never be satisfied because you are a yawning chasm of neediness and self worth issues. If it's the latter, have the courage to be yourself, by yourself, without converting real and/or fictional children. If it's the former, and that's what gets you hard, then you need to seek help and stay away from real children. You want to pretend they're bi in fan fiction? I can't and won't stop you. You want to speculate about their sexuality in canon? There's no need to, and doing so is pointless: They're straight, because they were always depicted as such, and we know the author. If that takes the sparkle out of your life, reexamine your life.Schultz didn't tell us Patty wasn't a Finnish jet pilot, either. He didn't have to.
>>144618237>Gee, other than the fact that they were only ever written showing interest in guys?So that's a no, there's no canon evidence that they're straight rather than bi, so stop acting like it.>Schultz was not about to write about gay and bisexual childrenOh but straight children is fine to write about.Your caveman thinking will go extinct with you and no one will mourn it

Sexuality gets erased because it's generally not talked about, so just like the guy who's having a meltdown in this thread, if someone sees a girl show interest in a man, it's assumed she must be straight and bi isn't even an option. Which is obviously not true, bi people exist and they don't have to make it obvious that they're bi
>>144618410>so stop acting like it.Nah. Fuck off.>>Your caveman thinking will go extinct with you and no one will mourn itlol, okay tough guy. Straight people will never die off, without taking the rest of the species with them; that's kind of how reproduction works. If you're talking about logical people... Well, we're becoming a rarer breed, no doubt, but I don't see the human race outlasting logic for very long, either.I have no problem with gays or bisexuals who live their lives and don't insist on meddling with others. I have close relatives who are bisexual and have zero problems with them. What I hate are these ludicrous weirdos who insist, against all logic, that this person or that character is bi/gay, because of some pathological need for it.Know that people don't hate you for your sexuality, they dislike you for your odious personality.
>>144618551>but their gender expression being masculine is never oneThat's not a tomboy.Do you know what a tomboy is?
>>144618583Yeah it's what people called women who presented more masculine than the standard for girls. Today we understand that's just where you present on the gender spectrum
Someday, Marcie and PP will lock themselves in a room with Charlie Brown and he won't be let out for 72 hours.
next peanuts thread lets exclude all PP/Marcie talk please? its the most tired, reposted topic in these threads, bringing nothing new to say.
>>144618573>I have no problem with gays or bisexualsYou just said that writing gay or bi children is bad but writing straight children is fine. I actually don't mind outspoken bigots who own it, but your type? At least be honest with yourself
>>144618609So you don't know what a tomboy is, got it.
>>144618642I think I do, what did I get wrong? Keep in mind behavior is a part of presentation
You can tell that a lot of people never read the strips and only saw the TV specials and shit where Peppermint Patty and Marcie's infatuation with Charlie Brown is never relevant, hence modern pop culture being 100% convinced that they were gay.
>>144618652Or Patty and Marcie's "infatuation" with Chuck was specifically and hastily added onto their characters because he didn't like the fact that he accidentally made a gay, and has no relevance beyond that. Can you stop and think for a moment about the implications of Patty (based on Schultz' cousin) being in love with Chuck (based on Schultz himself)? That was not an intended part of her character, that was a panic move.
>>144618551>is never one that's erased or deniedTomboys are very often bullied and pushed into trooning out. Nowadays any media with a tomboy has legions of people calling them gay or a tranny. That's erasure.>>144618609It's inaccurate to call tomboys more masculine. They are far more feminine than the avg women, and your framework of gender is the same sexist one the transgender movement uses.Just to clarify, don't hate trannies, do hate the ideology that creates and praises them
>>144618649You got the basic essence wrong.Which means you and other anon were arguing about different things. He was arguing about what's happening to oranges orchids, and you were talking about the 1995 Ford Fiesta's windshield wipers for some reason. When people don't agree on the definition of words, then pointless arguments occur.
>>144618682>Just to clarify, don't hate tranniesIf you have to say it...
>>144580797>>144580941Peanuts is dogshit, unfunny, and boring. I fucking hated it whenever they played the movies in class. I don't understand how anyone can like Peanuts except for boomers.
>>144618694>oranges orchidsorange orchardsI'm very tired, sorry for the typo.
>>144618682>Tomboys are very often bullied and pushed into trooning outAnd that's awful but not the same concept as bi erasure. You don't look at a tomboy and say "no they're actually not a tomboy", whereas bi characters in media get that all the time. Again, the anon having a meltdown in this thread and INSISTING they can't be bi until it's proven they are shows exactly that
>>144618680>Or Patty and Marcie's "infatuation" with Chuck was specifically and hastily added onto their characters because he didn't like the fact that he accidentally made a gay, and has no relevance beyond that.>>Can you stop and think for a moment about the implications of Patty (based on Schultz' cousin) being in love with Chuck (based on Schultz himself)? That was not an intended part of her character, that was a panic move. The fan fiction in this thread...
>>144618731All of this is established fact:Charlie Brown was inspired by Charles SchultzPepperment Patty was based on his lesbian cousinPatty's interest in chuck was never in the comics until several years after it's creationoh and one more fact:There is nothing in canon saying they're straight
>>144618696They're just the newest victim of the modern decay. I have a dislike of them, and a true hatred for the rot>>144618718Look, if you understand a tomboy as merely a masculine (again, this isn't accurate) woman, then yeah you're right. In my understanding of the thing, tomboyishness implies hetero, and a queer tomboy is a contradiction>until it's proven otherwiseTo be honest, I think you're blinded to the fact bisexuals are a small minority. It's straight weird and groundless to assume outside of headcanon that characters are bi
>>144618718>And that's awful but not the same concept as bi erasure. It's worse, because it happens to real people.>bi characters in media get that all the timeWhere? Who?>>144618779>Patty's interest in chuck was never in the comics until several years after it's creationNo shit? That's not surprising, given that SHE wasn't in the comics until several years after its creation.>>144618779>oh and one more fact:>There is nothing in canon saying they're straightDisingenuous at worst, dense at best.
>>144618811>Where? Who?for /co/ related, Jackie Lynn Thomas and bubbeline come to mind, people kept talking about how they were "turned gay" because they showed interest in women after previously showing interest in men. And don't get me started on overwatch characters that are supposedly "turned gay">SHE wasn't in the comics until several years after its creation. And her interest in Chuck wasn't shown for several years after THAT>Disingenuous at worst, dense at bestThis is a yes/no question:Does anything in canon show or say they are straight? The answer is no. Interest in men does not mean they are straight, it just means they're not lesbian
>>144618994Are you seriously stupid enough to think that bubbeline wasn't artificial
>>144612736>>144613671>>144586903since I am drawing porn of this, I am thinking about calling the project something other than Peanuts, provisionally Beans, but I am open to suggestions.
>>144619044I just remember than years before Bubbline was canon, some guy said "they're not gay" and one of the writers/creators responded "gee you say that like you know what you're talking about".I can't find the screencap but if you were here you know what I'm talking about
>>144618680>Patty and Marcie's "infatuation" with Chuck was specifically and hastily added onto their characters because he didn't like the fact that he accidentally made a gayHaving a fan theory is fine, but just making stuff up like this makes it sound like you're arguing in bad faith, and that you don't actually care about what's in the comic. Before Marcy even gets introduced, Peppermint Patty is shown flirting with Linus, asking Snoopy out to a dance, and even beginning her unrequited love affair for Charlie Brown.
>>144618631We should focus on Violet and Patty taking Charlie Brown back.
theres not enough yaoi in the peanuts fandom
Would Phoebe and Marcie get along?

New idea for a Peanuts special:“Your Butt’s Too Big, Lucy Van Pelt”Lucy discovers, to her embarrassment, that her butt has been getting bigger, and she must find a way to lose weight from it for the upcoming baseball game.
>>144580797Dicknuts
>>144623538I predict at some point, Franklin will say "DAYUM".
>>144619133Wasn't the strip originally called "Li'l Folks"? How about "L'il F**ks"?
>>144580797Wait, so what does "sexualizing kids" supposed to mean? Is this it?
>>144623538The opening scenes will go like this:After causing the baseball team to lose another game Lucy (after failing to find a way to blame Charlie for it) draws a hopscotch while thinking about why she can never do well. Then a bully (the same one from WHY, CHARLIE BROWN, WHY) passes by, sees her bent over and with her butt sticking out, and proceeds to heckle her for how big her butt is. Lucy becomes very embarrassed, and after returning home she looks at her butt in a mirror, and indeed it is very overweight. She immediately declares that this is why she’s so bad at baseball, and she now must find a way to lose her butt’s excess fat before the next game.
>>144601543>>144601759You know having strict parents isn’t exclusive to Asians, right?

>>144607300I miss his schit.Too bad we don't summon him by saying his name in these threads, but I guess he doesn't visit /co/ regular.
>>144610869That little book is interesting.>lucy going on about snow coming up from the ground is from a strip that never got reprintedDid this come up multiple times? It feels weird that You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown would have a whole song based on a strip that ran once in the 50s.
Schulz drew a fully naked version of the clothes getting knocked off gag. Pretty mild. It feels out of place in this book featuring big tits and hairy vaginas.
>>144610926>>144622454I wonder what the real time feedback was like. Schultz could have just stopped having her yell for any number of stock punchlines and just ignored her gimmick in the first place. But I've seen the axe picture... makes me really think he got hounded with hatemail about her and would rather just invent a new character than try to reform her.

Time to blow some minds: Schulz once clarified that, contrary to the common misconception, Charlie Brown is not bald. Instead, his hair is very light blond, to the point it's hard to see clearly. Pic related is a clearer depiction of what he's supposed to look like.
>>144634012I literally already knew.
>>144581054The Chuck/Pattie/Marcie is anime harem shenanigans before anime harem shenanigans were a thing. Fucking Peanuts of all things might be the grandfather of harem anime tropes and I don't know how to feel about that.
