My newest pickups
>>144582731And my updated shelf. Honestly don't think I can fit a single other book on here so I think I'm gonna shift my DC/Marvel/Star Wars books to the one spare shelf I have on my manga/anime bookcase.
I've shifted my shelves around a bit since the last time I posted to try and open up some more space. I'm rapidly reaching the point where I need to either somehow fit more shelves into my room or sell off the books I know I won't read again, or both. I've got the Cap by Gruenwald Omnibus and the Hitman Vol 1 on the way at the end of this month, and those are my last firm purchases for the rest of the year. I MIGHT pick up Black Panther by Priest Vol 2 sooner rather than later, just so I have that for when I get round to Vol 1, but otherwise I'm just focusing on reading and enjoying all that I have here already.
Just need Mr and Mrs X and I'll have every solo/duo Gambit work thats been released. I don't know why the fuck his 2001 omnibus was so much easier to find than Mr X considering that one released in 2019

I also don't mind collections that give you a "best of" or a specific storyline, turning into a completionist is a dangerous path.
How come no one talks about Y the Last Man anymore? Did hipsters quit reading comics back in 2022?

why are japanese peoples shelves so aesthetically pleasing anons
>>144581431Why has Marvel been so slow with 2025 Omnis? By this time last year I had written down like 20 Omnis. Now I have just 5, including DC. They usually announce ~70 Omnis per year, and now they haven’t even done 20 IIRC, while July’s almost over. When will Omar announce more stuff? I’m anxious for the War Of Kings Tie-Ins to be reprinted and complete my Annihilation Era. Still, not complaining money wise. But it’s weird. When will they do Doom 2099 and Punisher 2099? They did X-Men and GR, which were far less popular, but we’re still waiting for the good stuff. Well, at least they moved on with the Dr. Strange stuff. Now let’s see them start collecting 90s Silver Surfer.
>>144584405>I’m anxious for the War Of Kings Tie-Ins to be reprintedthat'd be Prelude to War of Kings?
>>144584405I'm sure there'll be more omnibus announcements happening soon. Omar tends to do them in waves, and it's been about three weeks since his last reveal. IIRC the brunt of announcements for the following year tend to all be in August/September. Just need to be patient.I think it's also partially because Marvel announced a lot of their late 2024/early 2025 omnis much earlier in advance this time around, at least as I recall it, so it figures that it seems there's been less announcements made recently
>>144584405i picked up a doom 2099 lotbut honestly it isn't worth iti'll repeat comics are shit, really jus a way to stay away from overpriced omni bus' IMO
>>144584474That and Road To WoK.>>144584532That tracks. Well, I won’t complain for spending less, I collect other stuff too, I could use a breather.
>>144584563The vast majority of entertainment is schlock, I don’t care, I like what I like for reasons that can be basic. I love Doom, I’ll buy all Doom stuff.
>>144584567Tbh, it's perversely nice to watch an announcement and see it's not a run you want. I've got my eye on the ASM Vol 6 and the Dr Strange omnibus he announced recently but other than those two, there haven't been ANY Marvel omnibuses announced for 2025 so far that I'm interested in. It's a relief
>>144584589I feel you. I am momentarily disappointed when it’s a reprint of something I have or a book I don’t care about, but then I think that I won’t have to spend another 100€, so it wraps around to leaving me content.
>>144584367Hardcovers tend to get fucked up less than paperbacks because Amazon plastic wraps them. I ordered a copy of OMAC by Kirby a few years ago that was bent up as fuck. Luckily putting one of my omnis ontop of it fixed the issue, but then there's also times like when I bought two Usagi Yojimbo saga volumes and they were literally torn around the spine and front cover
>>144584749I have gotten a couple dinks here and there but nothing as bas as that, I only buy heavily discounted stuff anyways so I accept that risk, like similar prices to instock's damages section, so with amazon I get the chance of MAYBE having dinks instead of guaranteed to have dinks with cheap pricesThe only time I feel I got screwed over to almost return it was with my Fables compendium 1 had a sticker on the fuckign front cover, I got it off and rubbed the glue off after some minutes of trying, but I was furious after thatIt was a third party seller for $20 anyways, so again I take some risks for discounts lel

I've been trading in and selling off a few of my omnibuses. I bought a lot of them when I had cash to burn but honestly they've just been sitting on the shelf so I'd really like to downsize.
>>144590575How much you pay for them and for how much you sell them?
>>144590800Depends on which one. Typically I haven't gone over what you'd get at places like IST or CGN. Some I sold for a good bit. For some reason X-men vs Apocalypse the 12 fetches a pretty penny So I like 120 something for that. Everything else was more or less what I paid for it. I'm not really looking to gauge anyone as much as I'm looking to clear up the shelf and maybe cover some other books I want.
>>144589667I forget if I heard about the artist "disappearing" in the upheaval in South America, but this vid really goes into detail:https://youtu.be/gidIRzuOjDc

>>144591496I like the oversized pages but a lot of them end up being a bit too heavy to really read comfortably unless you got a desk or something. The smaller ones are so bad but anything over like 900 pages is just like lugging around a brick. And they eat up a lot of shelf space really fast.

>>144581431Still got four more books on the way, including The Sons of El Topo, but here's the rest of my recent purchases
>>144594923I keep meaning to get into Elfquest. How you like it?
>>144594953It's baffling that it was able to exist in the American comics scene as early as it did. Wendy Pini basically starts it off as a fully formed cartoonist and storyteller and then just keeps going with an epic fantasy adventure the likes of which simply didn't exist anywhere else in the North-American comics scene at the time (Cerebus aside, but Cerebus is obviously a very different beast).Give it a try.
>>144595003Neat. I really just want to find more fantasy comics in general. I've read Bone, all the Conans, Cerebus and a not insignificant amount of the DnD comics so anything that's quite overtly has elves and shit in it is interesting to me.
>>144595027Well then Elfquest is pretty much what you're looking for. I would also recommend Wika by Olivier Ledroit (the artist for Requiem: Vampire Knight), that's a single hardcover volume.
>>144592257Redpill me on Dave McKean's Cages and the Crumb couple's book
>>144595003>Elfquest was one of the first comic book series to have a planned conclusion.Based>All issues of Elfquest published prior to 2014 are available online for free.Giga-Basedhttps://elfquest.com/reading-room/
>>144594031>>144594224I guess those licensing issues about the What If comics were the reason why it got pushed back over and over.
>>144595073Cages is basically this huge allegory about being an artist. Very metaphorical and naval gazing, could be construed at pretentious, but I liked it. The art is very different from McKean's painted comics like Arkham Asylum or Mr. Punch. His artstyle in Cages is very minimalist and angular, almost like Picasso.I wouldn't reccomend trying to collect all of the Complete Crumb comics volumes unless you're some sort of R Crumb super fan. The first couple volumes collect the comics he made as a child, and as an artist who had evolved drastically throughout his career, I really prefer Crumb's art from the 80s onwards to his underground work.
>>144595455But I was asking about the "Drawn Together" volume by Robert and Aline that's on the shelf next to Cages
>>144595381That can't be the reason. They'd have to have known that was off the table when they started and it wouldn't be hard to just snip those issues. There's not that many.
>>144587526I've wanted Eternault for a while but when some anon posted it to /co/ 8-9 years ago, it seemed to just randomly end with zero conclusion or pay-off. Adding to it, there are like 2-3 different versions of it. The original apolitical version from the early 60s, the cunty remake version from the 70s which was done in response to the asshole Commies getting their shit kicked in, and a version done in the 80s and continued on and off through the 90s by the artist after the writer got killed for being an evil commie terrorist.
>>144595941Now I'm a bit confused and shit. What the fuck is Eternaults and what's this about the book getting someone killed and communism?
>>144595947Legendary comic from Argentina
>>144595775so what else do you think was the reason for these pushbacks? seems reasonable to me that they tried to haggle with Marvel about it and that negotiations just drew out more and more
>>144596048I have a couple guesses. I imagine there could have been some issue with the printer. I don't much about the printing process but these are chunky books so a lot could go wrong. I also head one of the lead editors left the company for.... I don't know why, and that could have messed things up too. More importantly though if there was some issue with other rights holders I'd bet money they got into conflict with Dynamite over the use of Red Sonja. Who contrary to popular belief, isn't really a REH character and separate IP license on her own.
It's a long story. Eternaut is a sci-fi invasion story by Hector Oesterheld, an Argentinian comic writer and hardcore communist and drawn by Francisco Solano Lopez and Alberto Breccio, who was more apolitical. Oesterheld told the story twice and the version in >>144587526 photo is the original version which ran from 1959-1960 and drawn by Lopez. A remake (drawn by Breccio) ran from 1969-1970 and a sequel to the original (drawn by Lopez) was launched in 1975, before Oesterheld and his family (also hardcore communists) were killed for being part of a communist terror cell that was active in Argentina during the 70s. The basic story is that aliens invade earth starting in Argentina. Think Mars Attacks, but with the caveat that you never fucking see the actual alien invaders, who are a faceless and unseen figure tormenting Earth and the heroes, who are middle class intellectual types in Argentina society who are having a party when the first strike (poison snow that kills on contact with your skin) is unleashed. Version one is apolitical and ended several months shy of the magazine that carried it going out of business. The second version was canceled because readers hated the art. Rather than fire Breccio, Oesterfeld got an extension to rush an ending. Both versions featured the same cop-out ending: the heroes turn an alien spacecraft into a time machine and go back in time and one character turning the whole nightmare experience into a comic to warn humanity.
>>144596111The remake version (rebranded Eternaut 1969 when Fantographic published it) is very political in that the aliens are explicitly made into a metaphor for American meddling in South America/Latin America. The sequel (which has never been released outside of Argentina) came as Argentina fell under military rule and a huge crackdown on communism, backed by US meddling. Oesterfeld and his daughters were hardcore communists and got involved in a violent communist terrorist cell, much to the horror and disgust of Lopez, who didn't care or give a fuck about politics. And from the details about the sequel that have leaked out over the years, Oesterfeld went full Chris-Chan, writing himself into the story as narrator and sidekick to the main lead, who became a soap box sadie communist freedom fighter to match Oesterheld's IRL transformation into a communist terrorist. After the series finished, Oesterfeld and his daughters and their husbands all got captured by the military and straight up killed. Lopez and Oesterfeld's wife and the original publisher then spent the next couple of decades fighting over ownership of the strip; a couple of one-off stories came about but no continuation, partly because Lopez repeatedly stated that he wanted to pretend the sequel never happened as far as hating how Oesterheld politicized the strip and the main character (plus self-inserting). The only reason the strip finally got translated/released in the US in the last decade, along with Netflix acquiring the rights to make a TV show off the property, is that most of the people involved in the rights dispute are now dead and the original publisher being the last man standing.
Is the new Michelinie/Bagley Spider-Man omnibus worth tracking down? Or should I skip?
>>144596149It literally just got reprinted. It's good. Michelinie was largely a very solid spidey writer who was on the book a good while.
>>144596149If you don't have the Epics (Round Robin, Hero Killers, and Spider-Slayers) yes. It's probably the most comprehensive of the Michelinie Spider-Man omnibuses (all the Annual X-Overs are included) BUT, without the DeMatties Spectacular Spider-Man run, you lost a lot of context for important shit going on in the book that comes to a head by the end of his run... IE Peter's parents coming back alive and well, which is part of Harry's scheme to torment and terrorize Peter.
>>144596164I'm pretty eager for the Michelinie/Larsen reprint coming myself. Between these two that will more less collect a good chunk of my time as a Spidey reader. And with the Gruenwald Cap and a small scattering of looming Epics I'm uh.... well I think I might be done collecting omnibuses. Like completely. There's nothing else I really want to collect that I don't already have.
>>144596158Only Round Robin got reprinted. IIRC Hero Killers and Revenge of the Spider-Slayers are still in print. Which makes the omnibus a bit weird given that it should have been held back until all three are OOP.
>>144596111>>144596121Should also note the art styles: Solano Lopez have a funky style similar to EC Comics artwise whereas Breccio had a more abstract style of artwork with a lot of black shadows and empty space and looked like something from an issue of Warren Magazine horror-wise. Along with Breccio drawing the main character's survival suit like a realistic biohazard suit whereas Solano Lopez drew a more fantastical looking diving suit converted into a biohazard suit.
Should I hold off on buying the reissue of the standard edition Great Darkness Saga trade that's coming out later this year or should I hold out in vain that they'll reprint the expanded HC version with Annual #1 and the issues leading into the Great Darkness Saga and the aftermath issues? My copy of GDS from the 00s is about to fall apart from being read too much over the years.
>>144583828Where do you find these artists?
Wew lads, haven't been here on /shelf/ for a few months at least. Here's my latest haul.
What are you most looking forward to right now? For me it's the new printings collecting Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. I also feel light-headed thinking we're going to get 600-page volumes collecting Ashita no Joe and Legend of Kamui. Shinichi Sakamoto's The Climber is getting an English release, too. Manu Larcenet's adaptation of Cormac McCarhty's The Road. Final Cut by Charles Burns.>>144596367I feel like I might be missing out not getting all those EC collections
>>144583464>>144583828I always see people on reddit whine when their omnibus spines don't match up but me and my scattered collection of tpbs from across multiple generations is just laughing in contentment.
>>144596378>I feel like I might be missing out not getting all those EC collectionsYou can still buy the most of them for a reasonable price unlike Russ Cochran's EC Library slipcases.
What's the best place to get Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set?Amazon sells it for $170, seems like the cheapest option, but I'm afraid the beautiful box would get damaged.I see it's also in stock at Barnes & Noble, same price as Amazon, but no free shipping. UKbros, does anyone know why Forbidden Planets sales are so fucking shite these days?https://forbiddenplanet.com/catalog/comics-and-graphic-novels/?q=omnibus&sale=on&sort=relevance&page=1Most of these "sales" are less than a pound off. The ""discount"" on Incredible Hulk Vol 2 is only 9p. FP used to do actual fucking sales on omnibuses, and now we just get this instead
>>144608927I don't get your complaint? Are you talking about the sale price compared to their usual price (which I have no idea what it might be), because 27.99 off the RRP seems fine?
>>144608978That price difference highlighted on the search page isn't the actual sale. I don't know if it's the same in other countries but here, pretty much everything sold online has a percentage knocked off the RRP. The actual standard price for an omnibus online is typically never the RRP, so you can ignore that. I'm not complaining about that (and I certainly don't want to come across as entitled about it).The point I'm making is that most of the "sales" that Forbidden Planet have got going here are nothing at all. Looking at that Hulk omni, the original standard price (i.e., not the RRP) was £62.09, which is the middle number in pic related. What they're advertising as the new price on the left is really only 9 pence off, which is hardly a sale at all. This is the most extreme example, but it's a similar story with most of the others on "sale" here. There are a couple which DO have actually a significant discount on their original standard prices, like the Ben Reilly Omnibus and Phoenix Vol 2, but otherwise the majority of them are only discounted for a few quid at best. At worst, the "sale" is less than a pound. I just don't get why they'd even bother calling this a sale if most of their discounts are going to be so utterly negligible. That's what I'm complaining about.
>>144609158marvel and DC are the biggest they hope to sell it at 125they usually sell it at like 99 for a few monthsthen like 80 bucks after thatif something is still 120$ and it's marvel that means it's rare

>>144612328Chaz Truog, my bad.>Here’s what happened. I arrived at the convention center, and met my Animal Man editor, Art Young, who said, “Grant is here signing autographs. You should go introduce yourself.” I walk over to where they're doing their signing. They're dressed all in black, wearing dark sunglasses, very pale. I introduce myself. They look up, and extend a limp white hand to shake. They say something that, because of their accent, the noise of the hall, and the fact that they weren't speaking very loud, took me a moment to translate: “At last we meet.” They withdrew their hand, and went back to their signing. That was all. >“Oh wow, this is so cool, they’ve never met before!” remarked one of the autograph seekers. I stood there awkwardly for a moment, then I walked away. I was furious. The next day, we were seated next to each other for an hour at the DC table, signing autographs. They didn’t speak to me or acknowledge me in any way. As the convention went on, stories were circulating of how they seemed to be cultivating a “I’m a weird British writer” act, which the fans loved, but wasn’t impressing anyone else. So it went.

I'm sure he would have exchanged some more pleasantries if the whiner didn't show up in the middle of an autograph line and do nothing but say hi and offer up his hand before getting upset at only having his handshake returned along with a jokey reply before the autograph-signing resumed. When I'm at work, dealing with customers at that, I wouldn't just stop working and start chatting with some dude just because we'd once worked on the same project and somehow that means we simply must do more than shake hands. I'd shake his hand and move on, instead of wasting people's time. He'll have to find me when we're not both standing in front of a whole line of customers waiting for their turn if he wants to start chatting about life or whatever.

a tiny comics shop just opened where I live and I want to support them because the owner seems like a really nice guy, so I figured I'd subscribe to a few titles for the first time in years, but I'm having a hard time finding anything worthwhile. Some of this I've had for like 15 years, but I'd say a good half of it was bought in just the last few years. I started grabbing home releases again when episodes were purged from streaming services in 2020. I had really good luck with my first couple of trips out, but I've slowed again.I don't have much money, and I find dropping $50-$100 on a book easier than buying a full price DVD or blu-ray. I can easily download most anything, and often with better experience given how ridiculous and compromised some home video releases are - either missing episodes, being edited, not including the original music. etc. A physical book has more advantage over a download than that.
>>144631136Jealous of that Home Movies set. I've been a physical movie collector most of my life. Some have been gifts I just can't part with. Others are just favorites I like to have around. It's nice seeing it make a bit of a comeback lately.

>>144635076Usually the recolour complaining is just schizo posting about colours looking different on different types of paper. Moore books are some of the only times the complaining is actually justified since they do consistently get destroyed by recolours. It's like publishers are mocking him at this point.
