Mainly, a bit of continuity, things happening in the series that have change going forward (like Dev getting Peri) and not some strict adherence to a status quo that got boring in the OG series. At the same time, it seems to keep the plots simple and aimed at grade school level storytelling, which is understandable but seems to limit what they can actually do and keeps these plots seeming overly safe and juvenile at times, when even the original series got pretty dark... Crocker and Vicky taking over the world in their movies, stuff like Timmy resurrecting his pets, characters like Tootie or Sanjay having implied domestic abuse, the og series had some pretty dark and serious shit at times. This series is deathly afraid to have anyone pick on or make fun of the troon kid. It doesn't feel as "real", but I think Hazel is charming enough as an MC and Dev as a foil that they can carry the show by themselves. Bleached superiority confirmed.
