>writing a comic with a twist>also writing an alternate ending in case people figure out the twist too earlyIs this cowardly?
Yes.
Yeah because you're not committing to a resolution so the conflict will feel shallow.
Clue had three endings, go for it
>>144659254If the audience figures out the twist early, it usually means they were paying attention closely enough to notice the clues that were laid out for them.
>>144659254The quality of your story doesn't hinge on the twist. If you're depending on the twist being a surprise to ensure the quality of your project then it's probably not that good to begin with.
IMO it doesnt matter. The processes we follow are just tools at the end of the day, what matters most is the quality of the end result. To me it's only bad if it messes up the story or intended theme/messaging.
>>144659318This is it. The twist should enhance the story, not just a tool to surprise the audience.
>>144659308More writers should be flattered by having an audience smart enough to figure out where the story is going.>>144659318>>144659468Surprise is cheap; good storytelling is just as good or even better on a revisit.
>>144659254>Ryukishi sperging out because Umineko took so many years to fully release that even Reddit figured out the twist halfway through and his brother the editor couldn't help him due to coming down with a bad case of deadThat was hilarious
>>144659697>figured out the twist halfway throughYou have all the clues with the first 4 episodes to find the culprit. However, his friend's death might have gave him a new perspective now that he understood loss of a dear one. It gave a more profound whydunit.
>>144659254Just work on making your twist very good. Like Hot Fuzz or Fight Club.
>>144660710Yeah except you have to go by the concept of personas counting as people that can "die" and "be revived", which is retarded.
>>144659254As long as you only use the alternate for deception purposes before you release it and stick to your original idea as the 'true' ending, it isn't cowardly. Many famous film twists also had the alternate filmed, even if just so they could use them as decoy scenes in the trailer without spoiling the true film.
Better to execute a reveal your audience predicted well than trying to surprise them at all cost. Game of Thrones shows the dangers of reaching for the twist.
>>144659254I mean, even Spongebob did it with Shanghaied.
