Was Dave a loser?

Yes
But the cool kind of loser.

I know the whole Millarworld thing was kind of after-the-fact but you would imagine that a villain from the fraternity would have tried to fuck up Dave for fun.

I think the movie adaptation actor getting groomed by a roastie adds to the lure

Wait what

Kinda, he was a loser for liking comic books and not having a gf, but everything else about him was incredible badass to insane, He was pretty gutsy loser for even trying the whole hero thing, getting complete destroyed and trying it again.

I think most people would avoid getting in to a fight, much more 1/100 of what he has done. Towards the end is kinda aimless as in the direction he brought the character, he even received some super hero training from hit-girl just to become a normal cop. The point of the ending makes sense, is about growing up and leaving the fantasies behind, narrative wise it doesn't make a lot of sense.

He married the director of Nowhere Boy. He was 18 and she was 42.
They are still married today and have two kids.
