Birthright was basically just an extended excerpt from the Superman 2000 pitch (think of it as Brand New Day, but with Superman, written by Waid, Morrison, Millar and Peyer, which never became a thing), and Secret Origin was just Johns getting too cocky and thinking he could rewrite the entire DC Universe to his liking.
