>no don MartinFor shame
Why is using the latin alphabet for sound effects so cringeworthy and off-putting compared to kana?
>>145547070It isn't.
>>145547070it's not, you're just more used to seeing latin than kana so it looks less interesting. it also doesn't help that most american comics don't integrate the sound effects well and make everything look like the 60s batman cartoon
and that's all i've got, have fun with these
cool thread
Lotta FAPPs in DD.
BUMP
From the mess that was America: the artist shapes the cloud like a BOOM sound effect, only for someone else to throw in a generic KABOOOM on top of it
>>145545622Scroll up, dingus.
>>145547070Weebs apply lower standards to things made in Japan. That's all there is to it. Surrounding your character in the word "MENACING" is no different than a political cartoonist going overboard with labels.
>>145542822What comic is this from?
>>145541658The word is onomatopoeia

>>145557313wow that art is actually really nice
>>145550393Perfect. I've never liked that the "official" spelling of Godzilla's road is "Skreeonk."
>>145541658do japs have sound effects like this or their runes read like they are translate (ie sfx: skitter skitter)Because it makes me wonder why nobody tried to adapt it that way - describe the sound

>>145566160Having recently learned to read Katakana and Hirigana what I've noticed is a lot of sounds seem to just be repeating noises to give off a vibe. For example the iconic Jojo[Rumbling] Katakanna is just "GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO GO" repeated. But I can understand how a deep bassy "GO" might emulate the soft rumbling of an earthquake for example. In this example.Panel 1: DOM-u (the sound of goku kicking off the tile)Panel 4: DA-tsu (The sound of goku kicking off the ground upwards. The "tsu" at the end seems to just be implying a sharpness to it.)Panel 6: Gu- The sound of Goku's Kamehameha. (I actually can't tell what the second kana is cuz it's kinda cut off)Panel 7: Gyuunnn -the sound of goku sailing therough the airPanel 9: GA(tsu) -a big echoing gong like sound *I'm assuming*) to imply the power behind that hit.Basically sounds that evoke the feeling of whatever is happening, usually through repeated noises.
>>145566649yeah, that's what I meanI don't know how japs see it in their lang, but I've seen it before in some indie comics, and I think I prefer it that way for latin script.
>>145550589hngg
>>145566680post examples please
>>145566160>describe the soundLots of sound effects in manga aren't sound. I mean, there's a sound effect to describe silence (often used in a comedic way or to accentuate a contrast).Lots of sound effects are used to highlight an action, like グイ which depending on context means grab, grip, pull, yank...
>>145566649>Panel 6: Gu- The sound of Goku's Kamehameha. (I actually can't tell what the second kana is cuz it's kinda cut off)It seems to be グア but I can't find the meaning. it's probably the deformation of another sound.

>>145542620Cerebus is really the GOAT of this
>>145557313That is fucking irritating. It's the red circle on obvious part of an image.
>>145566107Weird. Sounds more like "Annnnnk-ahhh-ONK!"
>>145571943This. The biggest one I can think of is the "DON" sound effect when anything big or important happens in One Piece. It only makes sense in the anime, because they use a big tympani hit for those scenes. It literally just signifies that something big has happened; its not a real sound anyone is hearing. It would be like if cape comics had a specific sound effect for when the music stops in a scene for dramatic effect.
>>145573398Yeah. I kinda love the idea of using a sound effect to punctuate big events. Even if it doesn't make sense in the context of the world. Oda said he just really liked using that sound when working on Kenshin and it sorta became his signature. Like an implied Drum hit or something.
nice
