>>146208302As long as it’s very clean-safe and content-friendly, yeah…there’s nothing wrong with experimenting and doing different interpretations of fictional characters. Whether they be younger or older than they normally are. Take Pocahontas for example. Obviously she’s younger here too, though to be fair to her…there’s this interesting context of Pocahontas’s accurate age during the mid/late 1600’s decade. Historically, she was around her preteens in 1607. So I did make this image of how she would look like in the Disney version if it stayed accurate.

Pro AI guy here wanting to explore both sides of the argument, do you believe what you gen is art? Does it deserve respect for the effort you put in (independant of the effort it takes to make traditional/digital art)? Why or why not?
>>146211433>do you believe what you gen is art kinda, prompting and finagling with generators (especially ones that aren't as easy to use as Bing) does require some skill / knowledge >Does it deserve respect dont really care either way, but I'd say not as much as real art I'd say too that even if you "aren't doing anything that takes skill" you still have to have the ability to envision a scene that you want the slop machine to make. That part does still require creativity traditionally conceived
>>146211433what is art? what counts as art. if I take a crayon and draw a smiley face in the sidewalkis that art?that question is always so fucking stupid. is the KFC logo art? is the Wendy's logo art?how about the paintings that elephants and monkeys do? if an elephant throws paint on a board, is it art? what is art? describe the definition of art

(like in asking, you imply it's all nonsense)having said all that, the AI "tool" is a tool, like a crayon. it's just a much better crayon that you may or may not have control over. it's different but that doesn't make it "less than" a crayon

>>146211433i think one of the things that people get tripped is comparing this with drawing/painting, just as you are doing in comparing to traditional/digital art.If anything, this is closer to photography.
>>146211489By and large, I agree. I'll even further argue using a retort I myself have been using; intent in expression is absolutely conveyed through the desicions made in your prompt. Learning to prompt and control what your model responds to and how is mastery of the model, and an artist's abilities hinge on mastery of the tool or medium they use, so in the realm of defining art I see it no differently than learning the paint brush. Practically the brush takes more time and effort to master, at least imo, but that does not remove the effort or talent genning does, especially if you're involved enough with the model to affect its training data and reprogram or retrain it. Honestly the annoyance for seeing AI works online taking up spaces for trad/digital art could be aleviated if we just made seperate categories and tags for AI art so people who don't want to see it don't, and if it weren't for such nasty stigmas around AI works we probably wouldn't have nearly as much reluctancy to label them as such. >>146211538My definition is "an intended display, not necessarily physical or visual, to depict an idea, expression, or concept". Cohesion, experience, effort, and senibilities help make art appreciated or desirable but are not needed to be art. I could make art by arranging twigs on the ground. No training or theory is needed, I don't even have to be good or put that much effort in, it is still art. And nebulous definitions mean loose criteria, so I personally believe AI is art just for the merit of someone trying to make something and using desicions to come to a final draft. >all those examplesYes. Corporate art might have little artistic merit for only trying to convey buisness, but that's my subjective appreciation, this does not disqualify it for being art, and the same goes to anti-AI opinions commenting on AI art.>>146212468I appreciate you focusing on the categorical distinction. Why do you compare it more to photography?
>>146211752>there's no way to ask that question without sounding like you are shaming or insultingYou're so right. I can't ask a question about trannies/trans people without my word choices either showing bias or seeming biased because it supports one side or the other. Same with abortion and AI. In fact I'm biased by your word choices that you believe I'm falseflagging despite putting effort into how I phrased the question (asking if it deserves respect because I'm not flat out denying it does, as opposed to "how can you think it does?", though honestly on further review I can see how one would even consider my phrasing to be challenging the notion more partisanly charged than 0, truly can't seem to escape that) I agree it is another tool in our arsenal of computer aged tools, and taking pride wielding the tool alone is a bit different than asserting pride in a piece or product. You might be great at prompting but not at taking what's good and keeping it while prompting the undesirable elements out on subsequent gens, and both of those are needed to produce as skilled work with a model as can be. I think that truly there is a discussion to be had on how much we should weigh the difficulty and proportionally appreciation of skill to use a model to create your vision within possible parameters as there is with a pen, but as you already adressed it's hard to without feelings coming into play and muddling the waters, from either side. Of course the notion of this stems from the perception the industry and people have regarding the technology. My ire towards artists and actors speaking out on AI stem reactionarilly from their staunch unwaivering position against the technology, truly I have no desire to see them leave the industry or have their jobs taken, but I refuse to let their job security come between us and these amazing technologies we can further. 1/2
>>146212563This weekend I went to a convention and attended a voice actor panel with the intent to be challenged on my beliefs. He lamented on how bad he felt the SAG-AFTRA negotiations went to protect actors from AI fucking up their job opprotunities, as companies can just use your voice in AI to make more lines without consulting or paying you. Ethically I must disagree with this practice, but it raises a question of how we can make audio voice AI models ethical? And to start off that notion, the use of someone else or someone else's works without permission isn't immediately unethical; I can save and repost images anywhere on the internet, I can even print out a photo or save someone's voice clip to be used for something in my private life. How many memes are recycled in youtube or tiktok videos without permission? I think Fair Use and the intent of the works is a big deal in this conversation. If I'm not making something for profit, fuck you I will do as I want. Now, I want to steer us back to talking about image gens and artistic merit. In 5th grade I made an MSPA piece of trash floating in a river and it won like 2nd or 3rd place. I didn't take pride in having drawn pixel perfect rectangles, and I didn't take pride in having the river water the perfect blue I gave it (the ink on printout actually fucked the colors up a little), but I did take pride in assembling that piece, in deciding where to draw the tree, its shape, its branches, the can floating in the river and its label design. The piece is still my art no matter what. But like asking about how much appreciation I should have for that piece, I wonder how much appreciation is worthy of AI gens? As a baseline, I don't think the model programmers get newrly enough praise for both the model itself but also being the integral tool to make these pieces. 2/2
I personally find 'is x art' discussions utterly tedious in all their formsso my contribution to the discussion is I don't care
>>146212666If this stems from "I don't care what anyone else thinks, I like what I like" then hey that's 100% fine. To people indoctrinated into the belief AI is automatically unethical because it takes data and therefor is never creating anything organically they could argue that application is irrelevant if the method is inherently amoral, and to unravel that argument one needs to first attack the notion that the tool is inherently bad without context, which I think we all agree a tool isn't good or bad, it's the user and use of it that determines this.
>>146212738it's more that I think art is such a nebulous term that it's not really even something that has any value
>>146212754Ohhh. That's a good point, and actually I'm taking a step back and wondering why I'm so caught up on needing to define it as art. I might feel strongly and want it to be considered art but that requires others to agree with me, and frankly there are too many occasions in my life where people's approval is just uneeded.
>>146212939Thanks, Gaston.
>>146211811sorry, tristate area
>>146212549to me art is a visual creation of a drawing or statue that I can see and appreciate with my eyes. that's it.art is a drawing or painting or object or statue or arrangement of items that create a visually interesting result. even an specific arrangement of flowers can be art.
>>146211433Dall-E isn't art, it's a picture maker. Not every picture is art. I think of AI and Dall-E specifically as a kind of toy, like the spirograph or a paint by numbers kit. It's a fun distraction, and you can create some really interesting looking things with it, things other people might want to see even. But at the end of the day, it's limits (especially with censorship never mind what it doesn't even understand) prevent it from being art because it limits expression. I think eventually someone will be able to make art with it, but I think that's a ways off yet, and a conversation for another day. Here's my waifu.
>>146213319>Dall-E isn't art, it's a picture maker.
Hehehe Lois remember the time I studied the blade while you were partying?
>>146213386Does a camera stop you if you're trying to take a picture it doesn't approve of, or make the picture strange if it doesn't know what it is in the lens? No, it's a tool. I'd also argue that not every picture a camera takes is art. Which is why I'm saying at this point, with Dall-E specifically because it's content managed, it's not art. I think it can be used for art, but not in it's current state. Here's another pic, because that's what this thread is for.

>>146213491You're telling me
Did someone say Lois?!
>>146213471Well my discord stopped me from sending pictures of a naked body until I added them as a friend. It's moderstion at different steps, so a modern tech camera could totally consult a databases' guidelines and reject to save an image if it finds it inappropriate
Lois Griffin with her paper towels. But whatever you guys do: Do not anger Lois by telling her that there aren’t any paper towels.
>>146213386>>146213471I think you're both saying the same thing because DALL-E and a camera are both tools. One creates AI images and the other creates photos. The output is what is considered art, not the tool.
>>146213536beautiful
Peter is so happy to have a wife like Lois. :D
>>146213319if I take your AI picture and print it, if I frame it, and put it in a gallery is it not art?why not? what if I make your picture and make it a sticker?
>“Peter! I’m taking nice pictures of the wide grass area!”
>>146212549>Why do you compare it more to photography?Speaking mostly about the process. You start with an idea of what you are set to capture, but there is a necessary interaction with an outside that interferes in the process. You get unexpected things to deal with, which sometimes ends up modifying your initial ideas, you get many results from which you further act by choosing what you present and how to present it, etc.Granted, it's not like this is completely distinct between drawing and photography. You might do photography in a studio, with extremely careful and meticulous work so that every object captured, every light source, etc is precisely where you want it to be. You might draw going through multiple sketches allowing options to play out before commiting to one final drawing, etc. I'm just saying the process to a final, in the way it tipically goes, resembles that of photography more. (no matter the style, this is true whether you are going for a photorealistic ai pic or completely abstract) >You might be great at prompting but not at taking what's good and keeping it while prompting the undesirable elements out on subsequent gens, and both of those are needed to produce as skilled work with a model as can beand what's at play here is the aesthethic eye of the one using these tools, which is something separate from technical talent at understansing your tool (at using a paintbrush, a camera, or at wording a prompt accurately)> AI fucking up their job opprotunities, as companies can just use your voice in AI to make more lines without consulting or paying you. Ethically I must disagree with this practice, but it raises a question of how we can make audio voice AI models ethical?Oh, i'm completely separating the discussion from how this merges into commodity production under capitalism, that's a whole another game.
>>146213767I'd say no, for the lack of intent. However some would say intent is incidental and art happens regardless. There is no definitive answer to be had, only circular reasoning and philosophical debate. In it's current state I don't think Dall-E creates art, as it's too limited a tool. I look forward to what can be done with it in the future, as I'm sure people were just as excited about photography when it was invented, and argued about in just this same way. Here's another fun picture.
>>146213319>Dall-E isn't art, it's a picture maker. Not every picture is art.I don't think anyone was arguing for that. Not everyone farting around with a cell phone camera is producing art, so all photography is invalid?
