I want to discuss Australian cartoons. All of it.
The good, the bad, and the ugly.
The Australian animation industry, its past and present and what it holds for in the future.
Let's talk about the toons from down under.

Guys help!
I've been trying to find a cartoon that I recall being Australian for a long time, I think I saw it posted here ages ago!

It was a family of pandas I think? In one seen a young girl is shown flipping off the camera! And I think it was a kids rated show.

>Ketchup: Cats Who Cook (ケチャップ, Kechappu) is an animated series broadcast between October 5, 1998, and April 2, 1999, on NHK in Japan. It was a co-production primarily with Southern Star of Australia, and secondarily with NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), Think Tank Productions, and Shanghai Yilimie Animation Co. of China.

Autism thing. Weirdly enough UK/Aussie autists have the weirdest tastes in cartoons. This one British girl I talk to sometimes is obsessed with Batfink.

>is it any good?
Yeah it's really good. I only finished it just a bit ago, but I found it very enjoyable. It'a a little confusing at first because it demands your autistic attention to catch stuff it visually shows you.
I don't like using this term, but yes it's a lore show.
>Or is it just special effects and fight scenes and not much else?
There is that, a lot of it. And it does look really damn good. That's not just all there is, no. The entire show itself is a mystery type deal that you put together to figurebout what's going on. There isn't a lot of direct exposition to the viewer, it shows you a lot of things visually that you have to take note of (text that appears momentarily, stuff like that). It's extremely heavy on attention to detail.
Though if you don't care for any lorefag autism, you totally can just watch it for the action and animation. Nothing wrong with turning your brain off and enjoying the visuals.
>Also drawn blood? Is it for kids?
The show heavily features concepts of Eldritch Horrors and violence. There is a lot of robo-gore, but as the show gets deeper into the supernatural eldritch stuff there is actual blood and human dismemberment.
It's not super explicit or anything, or any extremely visceral human gore. At most there's a visible severed human arms, visual implications of humans being killed and eaten, mass-death via an Eldritch Horror monster, a lot of body horror and shit from said eldritch horror itself - stuff of that nature.
So, not necessarily for kids I'd say. Fine for teens and the like.

It had featureless nude animal characters. White and blueish purple. Might have been koalas?

Finally, I have an excuse to post about this movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfluaMlguvY
If you've read the book it's based on already you know how good it is & its rowdy satirical nature. This movie takes that book and basically turns it into the most out of step DTV Disney arse on a stick I've ever seen. Yet it's still such a fun watch to me because it's just so bizarre.
I'd go so far to single it out as the reason why Australia never tried again with 2D theatrical animation after that.

>Bluey (biggest cartoon since SpongeBob)
>Smiling Friends (biggest adult cartoon since Rick and Morty)
>Digital Circus (biggest thing that wasn't SpongeBob since Adventure Time)
>Murder Drones

Yeah and if you add in the fact they house Flying Bark, it pretty much looks like Australians won this decade. Japan has winning by default since 2017 or so but at least the Australians are picking up the slack with "western" style shows. I can't even think of many good or popular American animated shows this decade.

>Hazbin Hotel
>Invincible
>Lackadaisy?
>Owl House
>Rock, Paper, Scissors?
>that Patrick Star spin-off?
>My Adventures with Superman?
>... ?!?!?

I can barely think of any "American" shows that have come out, which is pathetic because our industry's batting average was super high a decade ago. If it were the same point in the 2010s I could list dozens.

Pretty much every Yoram Gross cartoon up until like Blinky S3 had a theme song that completely overstayed its welcome just to inflate the runtime up to the standard 24 minutes. Blinky's is at least charming, Skippy's is annoying as sin.

If there was an Australian cartoon back then, there was a high chance it was from them. They started out doing features with a rudimentary mix of live action & animation (before Roger Rabbit, if memory serves me right) before slowly moving into TV animation.

>Old Tom is based on a series of successful books written by Australian author Leigh Hobbs. Old Tom is a one-eyed, flea-ridden, orange tomcat, who’s good-natured but slothful behaviour is in contrast to the respectable, suburban matron, Angela Throgmorton, who treats Old Tom as if he were her son. They are, in reality, every bit as oddball and eccentric as each other, and together they become involved in a series of comedic adventures and topsy-turvy situations.

Kangaroo Jack is probably the biggest lie I was ever told

>me and brother were fucking HYPED by this movie after seeing trailer
>we really, really believed it would be about a rapping Kangaroo
>we used to hop around our bedroom for several hours at a time shouting fake rap lyrics we made up
>nothing offensive just Kangaroo related stuff like 'You,me and daddy are gonna go see Kangaroo Jack; And you, me and daddy are gonna laugh until our hair turns black; and you and me and daddy are gonna see that Kangaroo; and you and me and daddy but not dead mummy too'
>ought fucking kangaroo costumes to go to the cinema and see it
>went in, so excited and the movie plays
>almost no fucking talking Kangaroo whatsoever
>we get so annoyed that we star to actually believe the Kangaroo is talking when on screen and IS rapping even when its just a Kangaroo standing around
>spent weeks telling each other about all the great lines and basically convinced ourselves it was rapping Kangaroo kino and every other line was an awesome Kangaroo rap, even had quotes scratched into our wooden bunk bed
>got the DVD
>remembered the truth
>brother actually started crying as we watched

This is interesting, I was kind of curious if either place made an "adult" animated series. Since the markets are so small and I assume it would be cheaper to import them from elsewhere. Did Australia ever make any adult cartoons?

Aussie cartoons air in the morning, usually on a Saturday and required Disney to train them and the government to fund them.
Cheap BBC licenses filled the spaces and that was all replaced with US and US suns of Japanese cartoons.

True. That and the hard censorship that goes on there. It's really stupid.
Though since Bluey premiered Australia's gotten a better image, I think. I wish the ABC was popular so there were more rips on public torrents.

It's funny you say that. Disney edited Bluey alot for American kids, cause alot of the jokes that were okay for Australians were apparently not ok for US kids.
I think its bullshit that they edited out the part about Bluey's dad getting fat. It's a fact of life.

One of my old animation teachers worked on this & the Ocean Girl animated adaption around the same time. He brought in artwork from his days there & at Disney all the time, I couldn't get enough of it. He even bought in one of those circular animation disks they use for traditional paper animation, which I hadn't seen in real life at all to that point.
>>
>>146330186
I watched Ocean Girl because I was extremely horny over the bird lady. It was really annoying how they had like 5 minutes of animation and recycled it over the course of an entire show. I remember nothing happening, and the villain doing nothing.
They had a show about a friggin ocean planet ffs and did nothing with it. I demand a remake.
>>
>>146330163
Thats more like it. Are they related?
>>
>>146330279
The whole show was animated in house iirc, so they had to just Filmation that shit as much as possible just to make ends meet. At least the waxy 90s CG backgrounds look nice.

Long ago, before torrenting was scary and alien to me, I got that special by getting a Dailymotion or Vimeo version via some downloading plugin that probably does not exist anymore.
>>
>>
>>146330328
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX3WSExOie8 A relatively HQ version got put up on Youtube a few months back and I don't know where it could have come from, considering this special didn't even get a DVD release. Clearest version before that very obviously came from an old TV airing & it was a bit grainy.

Dailymotion is nuts as a media source. I downloaded the entire German dub of TMNT there. Why would I do that, you ask? Well, because they did stuff like calling each other faggots or made political jokes (like Krang and Shredder actively voting the nazi party and hating leftists). It's wild.

I'm trying to find this flash cartoon that aired on ABC3 from like 2012-2014 or so? it was about a girl who I believe was aboriginal, maybe in her late-teens and early 20s and she had to move back to her hometown despite being a city girl, typical conflict. The artstyle was in the same style as the Signpost maths textbooks, the "Sonic the Hedgehog" mono-eye sort of thing.

Bump, just remembered this series Flying Bark did around the late 2010s. Part of a larger live action educational(?) thing with a heavy emphasis on gross-out, it was their first real 2D effort following about a decade or so of CG series. It's not very well known and the live action parts are kind of hit or miss and a bit 'writer's barely disguised fetish'-y but I think of it as the missing link between their roots as makers of original Australian shows to becoming the go-to studio for action cartoons.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFlEmfuf5QI
>>
I'm happy for Glitch being such a huge indie Australian animation company with something as viral as Digital Circus making them shit tons of money.
I also vaguely recall that the company behind the animation for Rise of the TMNT and Lego Monkie Kid also did the animation for the original Blinkie Bill cartoon.

Gotta give it up to Walt Disney Animation Australia for producing some of the finest quality television animation for many 1990s Disney cartoons back in the day.

Rivaling TMS in terms of good character design, movement flow, and expressiveness.

It always disappointed me as a kid how boring the show itself was animated & storyboarded compared to the intro where it's just loads of crazy abstract imagery & nice frame by frame animation. There's no real variation to the camera angles on the backgrounds, it's just exceedingly flat shots as nice as they may look on their own.
At least Yakkity looks cool in the original series bible. He looks like he stepped out of a 90s clipart CD.
