>One day, the Animals woke up. They started thinking. They started talking. They started taking revenge. Now, a dog and his girl are trying to get away—out of New York City, and all the way to San Francisco, to the only person who might be able to protect and save her.

And so Animosity. Bit of a lost comic. Last thread ever posted about it to my reckoning was back in 21 so this should be a blind adventure for most of you. I have skim read this thing and I found it novel enough to warrant making a try for storytiming it. This isn't high art ofc, it's a comic industry feminist's work and it's attempts at doing moral quandaries is about as shallow as a puddle with the work is very much is tying to follow in the footsteps of walking dead in a meandering non-plot with no resolution but I also appreciate a lot of the novelty around it's premise/worldbuilding even if it never leans far enough into what should be a really solid premise.

All Storytime posters like me are nothing if not attention craving needs. I adore hearing whatever idle chattery goes down and i'll maybe chat right back.

Sorry, to much ramble not enough comic. Stick around and maybe pipe up along the way mhmkay?

Bennett is a frustating writer because she has some interesting ideas (this comic, the victorian lesbian insect body horror comic, DC's heroines in WW2) but she doesn't have the actual writing chops to pull them off so they end up half baked.

>>146343074
It's asking to much for absolute consistency but how I read it is that the animals as of when they get uplifted are of a mental stage analogous to their equivalent age in human years and they reincorporate memories of their pre-sapient existence. They probably got some fast tracked education to catch themselves up on things. There's also some retention of their pre-uplift instincts like how spoilers but when the deer character become an eyepatch wearer he has a a bit where he complains about the nausea of his prey instants going off all the time because of losing 360 vision.

Don't think any ways to deep into the fact that bugs are also smart. This planet should have long since been stripped of non-bug life by now if that was actually played straight.

This entire book can best be summed up as a cool idea the writer's had and wanted to see how long they could drag it out for. There is zero thought put into anything, it's all just a bunch of random shit the creative team thought was cool. No questions are answered, nothing is ever expanded on, there is no internal logic, and nothing has any depth.

It's weird that they spent time to have a conversation about pronouns in a military camp full of guerilla koalas and rocket turtles, right? I was wondering about that part too. Is the bear trap supposed to protect the mouth? Or make the bite force more powerful? I feel like it'd most likely just get in the way, and make it more difficult for the dog to use its primary attack method in combat situations.

>But I still don’t understand why uplifting would make carnivores not want to eat the meat they need to live
"For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief". Intelligence is a great asset, but it's also a notable burden for one's mind. It comes with side effects such as empathy for other living things, an understanding of morality, the capacity to feel complex emotions such as shame/guilt, and stuff like that.
It makes sense to me that sapient carnivores would feel horrible about eating other sapient beings, even in situations where they would simply starve without meat in their diet.

What? Animal mammals have periods, ya dunce.
What do you think "in heat" is.
>>
>>146356348
Animals do not have "periods", not in the human sense. Dropping blood everywhere in the wild for days at minimum will get you immediately mauled to death by the nearest predator with even the dullest sense of smell. It's objectively a terrible evolutionary trait in context of the greater animal kingdom.
What we refer to as "heat" is more akin to a biological urge to fuck accompanying ovulation, not the expiration of said ovulatory period.
>>
>>146354898
I somehow didn't remember ANY of what happened past the animal/military forts, until I started reading going "oh yeah".

I wanna give the creators the benefit of the doubt and assume they would do a better job if given another chance.
Kinda like how early Walking Dead Kirkman rushed a lot of storylines cause he didn't know how much time he would get, but this comic really should have spent more time fleshing out the dozen ideas it has, and maybe choose between a tone that has fun with the premise and a tone that fits the dire situation. Would honestly prefer the dire side since the artist does a great job drawing animals in a realistic way.

Big agree. Animosity leaves me blue-balled with positing and then dropping a new perspective or factions or a splash page of a community and then just never touching on it again fter it gets destroyed because they always get destroyed. Remember Animilitary from earlier in the story? Well there 'should' cells of animilitary scattered across the comic, enclaves of zero tolerance for carnivores, human desk workers and service workers shitting themselves because there there are mice who can do all their jobs on a paycheck of pennies.

They've been alluded to before but 'Rise' and 'Evolution' does handle the novelty of the sapient animals/people chars wrestling with 'we live in a society' conversations lot better then the original comic. Youll probably really like evolution if some of these pages tickle you.

I actually remember this from my history studies. there is an interesting writing from, I think it was... Ratramnus? A theologian in CHarlamagnes court in the 800's writing about Cynocephaly, dog-men.
And he was talking about what they should be considered if they have the souls of men or beasts. And he concluded that what made something human wasnt words or some physical trait, but specificly the ability to reason what is right and wrong and law and civility and such.

here is an easily digestible reading of part of it:

He's correct, though. On female dogs, vaginal bleeding means that the dog is fertile and ready to get pregnant any moment. On humans, period blood means that the woman is not ovulating at the moment, but will be about a week after the bleeding ends. The bleeding in dogs occurs for a different physiological reason than the bleeding in humans. It might look like menstruation, but it's not.
Only a tiny handful of mammal species have a menstrual cycle. Humans happen to be one of those rare exceptions.

I would recommend "Elmer" to anyone who enjoys the premise of Animosity. In "Elmer", all the chickens of the world suddenly gain human-tier intelligence.
>>
>>146362415
>Elmer
I'll look at it, but just chickens sounds pretty bland.
Especially if they're all just gonna be on the "fuck humans for eating us" train the whole way through.
A big part of what I was enjoying from Animosity were the various responses every animal had to their unawakened history with humans, their different personalities, and how those combined to color their interactions with humans and the other sentient animals going forward.
Chickens rioting loses a lot of that depth if that's all it is, so I'll have my fingers crossed that it's not.

I can't find it but there's a Bizarro panel that features 2 cowboys eating dinner while herding cattle and one of them saying "If cows could talk we'd have to lie to them" which I always thought was kind of poignant and was reminded of it while reading this comic.

On a separate note, this whole comic feels ripe for a YA novel alongside a film version. CG animals are all the rage and the scenario allows for interesting set pieces. With the success of Planet of the Apes I'd think it'd be an easy pitch.

The only problem with his argument is trying to make it after banding together with the other animals.
If he had been working alone, doing nothing but feeding himself and trying to mostly act like before, he'd have had a stronger argument.

Okay, this fucking shit with the bees makes absolutely no goddamn sense at all. First off, a regular-sized hive needs to visit like six million flowers to make a pound of honey. A gigantic megaswarm like this is going to need to pollinate ungodly numbers of plants to feed themselves.

Intelligent or not, under no fucking circumstances should there or could there ever be any need to fight them, coerce them, or kidnap them. Bees NEED to pollinate plants or they will FUCKING STARVE TO DEATH. You walk up to the swarm, you tell them you planted a shitload of crops nearby, and those goddamn bees would thank you for making their lives easier.

This comic has such an interesting premise and it just keeps doing stupid shit with it.
>>
>>146371522
I almost feel stupid for singling out only one dumb thing to criticize from this book, but why didn't they just try making a deal with the bees? If they had and the bees forced their hand by refusing to cooperate, then justifying their position to an outsider seems like the time they would bring it up.
>>
>>146371522

>My name is Ladybug! Can i have a job in your society for myself and my descendants?

>Yes, Go out into the fields to help with hand pollinating all the plants because the local bee colony are lazy idiots. We'll make you a custom apartmentment out of an old tuna can as well.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd4MmbWks2E
>>146372496
IRL Pollination by actual insects is an inefficient affair with buds being over and underpolinated at random. Bees should hit every flower easily.
>>
>>146372513
Was thinking the same thing.
It would probably conflict with the whole "they're too small to count as people" thing that was supposed to be the focus, if they had come at them on equal terms to negotiate in the first place.
It just makes them seem even more fucked up because like >>146372496 said, the bees likely would've been all over an agreement like that.

Why is tearing away the convenience/morality crutch of not waking up the Fish count for a mistake to you? The sea-life are just really vulnerable and trapped by their anatomies.

The bugs turning smart isn't an 'issue' because preventing eat ze bugs from being a part of the solution to the moral problem of uplifted predation at the base of the story is a 'good' thing here.

I rather consider the insects or that krill scene near the start of the comica black hole of failing the smell check of realism according to rhe rules as written. We know the bugs question did on some level cross her mind when thinking of this stuff and bennett offers a teppid sollution by saying that hives are just just fighting each other...And that isn't good enough. If not ants and bees and wasps it can be pillbugs or crickets or some such who inherit the world. Mosquitos alone with an offered promise of being allowed to and spread diseases to the humans who conspired to exterminate them even in the pre-wake would and could end humanity on their own.

This comic’s only saving grace is that it’s as old as it is. It’s like going back and reading Y: the Last Man where the badass black chick is actually kind of likeable and the weak protag dude is actually somewhat relatable because it’s not as “current year” up as it could be. Nowadays, you know these particular creatives would have the animals full on making metaphors for abortions and shit.

I am assuming the rest of the story will explain more about why the bees stopped pollinating since it just seems like they were just doing that to fuck over everyone (humans and animals) for no reason. I also assume all the women are in the city since it is safer, they are forced to, or it makes the bee less evil when they start to sting everyone to death.

While reading it, I thought the twist on why there aren't any women was that they were following orders from another queen bee located there, having the men be her sudo drones in maintaining the area. However, I learned that most bees are female.

This comic made no sense at all, yet I read it till the end. The idea is cool, but the story is a complete trainwreck with self-aware bees and so on. How small can an animal be until it no longer is sapient? And yeah, is this supposed to be serious or something?

They should have subverted expectations, this is how I'd do the arc
>MC encounters the bees being attacked
>Knee jerks and sides with the bees
>Queen Bee take her friends hostage and force her to go raid the commune to get the princess bees back
>Shenanigans
>Turns out the commune has been trying to convinces the bees to help them pollinate their fields and the Queen a despotic psycho
>Princess bees jump ship to the commune and are trying to start their own hives and live with the commune in peace
>MC now has the moral quandary of saving her friends but destroying a good thing
>>
Also, when a queen bee dies or goes missing, the drones start laying eggs to keep their numbers up while a new queen gestates. If their old queen was kidnapped, wouldn't they just make one? Bees only live about a month, they don't really have time to go on a quest to rescue the old one.
>>
>>146382912
>If their old queen was kidnapped, wouldn't they just make one?
If they were still mindless drones running purely off of instinct, sure.
Here the entire hive got turned into a family that probably sees the queen as their mother.
They likely could replace her, but writing off your mother to die or suffer is a lot harder for creatures suddenly saddled with morals and empathy.

I got impatient and read all of it and the implications seem to be that sandor killed her father and helped get the meds that her mother ODed on. But the story ends right before he admits to it.

Just as a reminder, bees make wax from the sugars in their honey. They make honey from the nectar they get when pollinating. The pollinating that these bees have not been doing. Millions of flowers to make one pound. 55 to 90 thousand miles flown to make one pound. One bee makes, in the course of its entire life, about.8 grams of honey. So about 570 bees die making one pound of honey.

And these bees kept thousands of gallons of wax boiling in a hydroelectric dam somehow so they could shoot it out the top like a medieval castle. Even though they don't pollinate anything.

I know it's just a stupid fucking comic but this shit is seriously irritating me.

Was gonna give it the benefit of the doubt and assume it was one of those saltguns people use for shooting flies.
But no that was just a whole bullet hitting a single bee.
>>
>>146389172
If I had to defend the comic it never said the bees didn't polluntate, just that they didn't pollunate stuff at the farm.
It probably isn't the case and the writers didn't think about it enough. It could easily been one line of the bees working the land the other side of the damn for miles.
>>
So which one of the people behind this book is the vegan?
>>
>>146388150
Just same as before
Some ideas that should have been more thought out and fleshed out.
Could have had the bee colony be almost like rivals of the bees ruling a neighboring land or something. Or a flashback of the farm trying to make a deal with the bees but when they didn't want anything they traded for they resorted to slaving tactics.
We've spent over qp issues of hinting at what Sandor did we should have just had the reveal at this point cause right now they keep hinting at something murderous while still giving us flashbacks showing why he wouldn't be the type of dog to do that.
>>
>>146389172
>about 570 bees die making one pound of honey
A standard 10-frame beehive box in an apiary contains ~25 thousand bees.
A typical hive found in nature will have ~50-75 thousand bees
A hive the size of a dam, formed as a collaboration between many, many hives, could contain tens of millions of bees, and could conceivably produce tens of thousands of pounds of beeswax.

Alternatively, it's a fucking comic book, don't think about it too hard.
>>
>>146387973
Thanks for this one.
>>
The book is still just entertain enough to not hate it.
I wouldn't mind owning it physically but I would probably skip over it when recommending comics to others.

Like comparing this to say Y The Last Man this book has like 3x the potential and 1/3rd the thought put into it.
Ythelastman had characters I got muchmore invested in and while there is a lot you could logically point out how the world would instantly collapse it for the most part kept focus on things it did think about and things that make you go "oh yeah this job would become super needed or this thing happen".

Like this Walled City we're going into now, which is shaping up to be a humans only cult. It would work if it hadn't been a year or two into the Wake, kinda like we had at the beginning with the preacher working people up into suicide bombers.
But now unless they are just the world's best scavengers with the US military gear, how are they still feeding themselves or keeping things running without any animal help like we just saw at the farm barely able to keep afloat. I get the feeling we're not gonna get a lot of questions answered reasonbly while we focus on bigbad human cult.
>>
>>146396705
It's definitely just entertaining enough to read for free online while I do other stuff, but I only think I would buy this if I could get it all at a bargain bin price, and mostly for the novelty of being from an out-of-business indie company.
