1/2: What could have been.

Something I realized while watching this episode is that it's absolutely TRAGIC that Monty die right before a tournament arc. Don't get me wrong, it's sad that he died at all. But damn, right before a tournament arc?

Think about it. Monty Oum. The action guy. Who was famous for and was so good at fight choreography, he was half the reason anyone watched the show, DIES right before a tournament arc. An arc all about action. In the what is probably the most action pact season of the show. ABSOLUTELY. TRAGIC.

This is like a star athlete going undefeated during the pre-season, then they die right before the season really starts, along with your chances of winning the championship. Again, tragic.

Tournament arcs always help a series popoff. I hope everyone in here is old enough to remember how mha's tournament arc helped it popoff. And although I not old enough to remember, the chunin exams did the same for naruto. And Yu Yu Hakusho before that. And Dragon ball before that.

This arc could have been what the kids call peak. Just imagine it. A whole ass tournament arc of Monty Oum tier fight scenes. FUCKING. PEAK. It would have made the series absolutely blow up. At least comparatively speaking. People would be sharing insane clips. People who would never have looked at the series twice would give it a chance. Right now we'd be unironically debating whether or not this is one of the greatest tournament arcs of all time. But sadly, we never got that. Instead, we got this.

2/2: the fights

As I'm sure you guys can tell. I did not like the fights in this episode. And unlike last episode, I don't even think there was a good effort.

JNPR vs IDGAF sucked. With the exception of sniper girl (love you boo) there designs and weapons suck. I understand that not every weapons needs to also be a gun. But, my brother in christ, how the fuck do you expect to kill Grimm with this shit (picrel)? What are you gonna do against an ursa? Pyrrha should have been able to solo these guys just as easily, if not easier than she did team CRDL.

SSUN vs INDG also sucked. The black guy just watched that girl summon a twister, didn't do anything, and was out in 2 seconds. The gay one was taken out like a bitch. And the INDG girls danced more than they fought.

And it's super fucking lame how we got not one, not two, but THREE fights in a row where the whole enemy team was taken out in one hit. Super lame.

Imma be real with you guys. While I plan on finishing this watch though. Seeing how bad these fights get has really killed some of my motivation to do so.

On a more positive note, I liked crows introduction. And Blake plushing at sun.

>"Huh, those kids weren't half bad."

Ah RWBY. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Obviously, not much happened this episode and so there's not much to say. I will echo a few things though:

This is absolutely true. Especially so because, just like with volume 2, there's an obvious increase in production value here. With volume 2, Monty got to level up his fights, like with the huge mecha highway battle. You can only imagine what he would have done for the Vital Festival. I mean, the stuff he did on Dead Fantasy and Red vs Blue is just incredible and he could have really been let loose here. "If only..."

Agree with this as well. I mean I understand animation is difficult and takes a long time etc, but thanks to Monty, RWBY was arguably most well known for its fight scenes! Even before RT hired him for RvB, he was just animating fight scenes and posting them on YouTube and Newgrounds for fun. Haloid and Dead Fantasy, which Monty probably made on whatever shitty computer parts were available in 2005, is immensely more entertaining than everything on display here. (I still maintain that he was a greater creative driving force beyond just the fight scenes, but it's clear that action and fight choreography is where his true love was and where he excelled at).

I understand that Monty was unique and asking anyone, even some really talented animators, to match up to him is a herculean task... but this is RWBY after all, and having these fight scenes right after volume 2 does not flatter anyone.

This might sound odd, but I don't actually mind this attitude very much. If Monty wanted his show to be mostly improvisational, consistency be damned, then fair enough. The issue is they (Miles and Kerry, and probably Monty too) were also trying to do this long form storytelling and build up this world with deep lore. It made this "push and pull" feeling in the show, where they were trying to set up all these storytelling blocks to build off of, but also playing it by ear. You can do one or the other, but not both!

Great job finding "cover" Pyrrha.
