What prevents cartoons from having long-running serialized stories like One Piece? This has has been running since 1999. While in the west, we have longer running series (The Simpsons, South Park), they're episodic. It's difficult for a story-based show to get to even four seasons, let alone run this long and gain popularity as it ages. Why can't a show like ATLA still be running to this day? What prevents that?

They quickly turn into soap opera shit

Ratings suck on reruns of anything you're supposed to watch in a specific order. Producers will trade a thousand fans of an ongoing story that talk about it online in between episodes airing weeks for one dedicated kid who'll watch Spongebob any time it's on, whether he's seen it a million times or not.

Largely unlike Japs people in the west get bored of the same repetitive thing, especially on animated content. Long, serialized plots that go over a few years start reminding people of the shitty soap operas people meme about. Long runners that go over a few years lose people, like how Pokemon's anime was the hot thing for about half a decade then lost all popularity and got relegated to the Disney XD subchannel no one gets

Uhhhhhh i dunno, Americans don’t go all out in animation unless it’s 3D or that vague time in the late 90s-00s where everyone was making 2D kids movies like Prince of Egypt, plus there’s probably only like two other shows that have been going on as long and consistently as OP…. Like Detective Conan I guess? Not sure what else

And also when they make cartoons they have a problem of making the world around the character. What oda did was make a world and put characters explore it.

Why do you cite One Piece when it's pretty much lasted longer than a ton of it's contemporaries, maybe other than that shitty vampire manga and othe big stars, with a creator who spends 90% of his time working on it? If you ask me, it's actually struck gold compared to a bunch of other titles that get axed less than 1/4th of the story in.

Weird comparison but One Piece filled the Venture Bros sized hole in my heart

>long story
>creators are total nerds of other things and add what they love
>tons of freaks that are super important to the story
>central cast that are always getting into shit
>Zoro is there
