Just watched the entire franchise over the last 2 months with my fiance and enjoyed way more than I ever would have thought. This show is very easy to say mean things about and I have no idea how /co/ feels about it since im viewing the series completely seperate from it's fandom and I never watched it during the peak of it's popularity, but I feel like if anyone actually took the time to watch it and get to know these characters and their world, they'd get just as sucked in as I have The music is also just so great, especially in the movie Grey and Amethyst are the best characters overall and Blue Diamond/Peridot give me feelings
>>146736303>grey *GregI also absolutely loved everything with Larse and Saddie and their whole character dynamic and growth and I think future was better than a majority of universe
It's extremely divisive here and a lot of fans were burned by the direction the show went on later. Keep in mind that there were several year-long hiatuses when it was coming out which often resumed with townie episodes, which didn't help. Reception seems to have become more generally positive over the last few years though. Also based taste in gems
>>146736303It's surely a different viewing when you're watching it non stop because back then people were speculating and theorising and the series couldn't deliver. Also the "bomb" format that they did could only drive short bursts of progress so people had more time to let their imaginations run wild.>GregBased.
>>146736325This song was so good, it's what inspired me to post in the first place I had no idea futures release schedule was so shitty, I can definitely see being burnt out waiting for so long for angsty Steven
>>146736366Oh Future's wasn't that bad, it was seasons 2 - 5 that had a horrendous schedule.
OP likes adventure time too?
>>146736602I grew up with early adventure time but grew out of it by the time I was like 15I remember watching the very early Nick toons animation when it came out and I had my brothers girlfriend at the time knit me a finn hat that I would wear to school I swear I was one of the first to do it, but I digress My fiance has seen it in its entirety and told me its fine, she likes the music mostly I dont have much interest in the later seasons but I've seen the bmo in space and lesbian episodes from the newer seasons
>1. Death>2. Taxes>3. Blue Diamond being fine as fuck
>>146736808Holy macarole *bashes own head with hammer*
To fully grasp /co/ - and the wider internet's - feelings on Steven Universe, you really had to be there. Nowadays you must be able to watch it with a level head and consider it hollistically, but back in the day, when the show was one of the hottest things on /co, had been for years, underwent multi-month hiatuses on the regular, often leading up to a bunch of episodes even the die-hard fans hated because it wasn't about what they actually liked, and all the shit with it being one of the first - and probably the most definitive of the - "gay teen cartoons", it's just an entirely different beast.People hate SU because of what it did, not because of what it was. And because of what it was. But less so.I think getting into Steven Universe requires a bit of emotional openness - that's hard. Complaining about inconsistent animation, poor scheduling, behind-the-scenes drama, fandom drama, mushy messaging, and The Gays - that's easy.
>>146736882I appreciate your input, posts like this is why I wanted to reach out and hear what everyone here had to say
>>146736325>Reception seems to have become more generally positive over the last few years though.I'm just glad that we don't have multiple threads up about how much people hate the show at this point, those were fucking weird.
>>146737061You worded that kind of poorly but I know what you mean. The ones that were like "I wish I could break Steven's arms"
>>146736808No stay big
>>146737085Yeah those ones, people realllllly focused in on Steven and it got to the point of violent autistic fantasies like you'd see out of Deviantart or something.
Blue is a peak SU design. I don't mind some of the weirder looking gems since we got such a bodacious babe in exchange.
>>146736303>your biggest takeaway from Steven Universe is that Blue Diamond is hot OP is truly one of us
>>146737179I truly never thought about the idea of a woman being big before and that being an attractive trait Always thought the size theads on /d/ and stuff were just plain bizarre But alas, the appeal.. I done went and seent it
>>146736303>The music is also just so great, especially in the movieSU legitimately has some of the best background music in Western animation. Or at least the first few seasons did, it got a lot more subdued later on. I think the songs are very hit or miss but damn it had some good BGM.
The show would have gotten at least 20% less blowback if it weren't for Keeping it Together. That one episode implied a bunch of shit about the direction the story would turn, that ended up being total bullshit.
>>146736808shrink smaller

I loved how they blended digital instruments in with traditional orchestral ones, reminded me a lot of PS2/Gamecube-era RPGs.
>>146736303In most places I have seen the general consensus is that everything up to the Cluster Resolution is a very good show, with the rest of the series pre-future feeling like a mess with more lows than highs, leading to a souring of the overall experience which has calmed down. This has led to a yearning for the kind of show it was in season 1, with more blending of gem and townie stories alongside to more mystical presentation. Also the Movie is loved and Future is generally will liked outside of dude who are mad Steven went off to find himself instead of becoming the God King of Gemkind who fucks all the gems, that they can self-insert into.
8/10 concept5/10 execution
>>146737414I've seen the midpoint of season 3 often cited as the point the show started to notably decline. Mr. Greg is in the first part of that season and is widely regarded as one of the best episodes of the series.
>>146736705yeah you need to watch the rest of it. there's better episodes in the later seasons. if you can give steven universe a pass you need to give adventure time a pass. don't be hypocritical.
>>146737613>You HAVE to watch my show now or else you're a hypocrite!Least forceful adventure time fan
>>146737613I'm not opposed to giving it a shotIt's either that or gravity falls nextI would get on regular show but that's another one where i got the peak while it was airing when I was a kid and have only heard of it declining from then on
>>146737634Regular Show gets worse, then kind of pulls itself up towards the end, has a weird last season, but bizarrely sticks the landing. IMO it's not as bad as some people make it out to be but it has a handful of infamous episodes later on. I think its overall quality was more consistent than either AT or SU but it hit highs that weren't quite as high and lows that were worse than either.
I was on Tumblr during most of SU's course, so it's kind of hard for me to imagine that it was a hot thing here. Even with all the shit it got, it definitely did something right to get engagement all the way through. Is there a key to making a show that's gay while also popular with homophobes?
>>146737771>Is there a key to making a show that's gay while also popular with homophobes?Attractive women who's edges cann all be sanded off so that they can be a "trad wife" and appeal to their saviour complex.Thank you Pearl.
>>146737771Yeah, make the characters fuckable.
>>146737771Just have SEXO designs. It's really that easy.>TumblrMan I remember that Alexandrite controversy where it made a showrunner leave the site. So stupid.
>>146736303Even with its flaws all three iterations of it (OG, movie, Future) are probably my favorite CN thing in many years. Would be nice if we got more, but I'm OK if we don't.
>>146737826>that Alexandrite controversy where it made a showrunner leave the site.SpillI wasn't a tumblrina until long after this show entered quiet retirement
>>146737869Pretty basic. People were looking forward with what the fusion of all the gems would look like and there was a big meltdown since people thought it looked "ugly" and how the colour scheme did not make sense (despite Alexandrites do have purples and greens). One of the creators or something, forgot his name, tried to reason out the philosophy of the design but was just met with threats and awful shit. He then left Tumblr and iirc for good. This also pretty much buried the "Garnet is a fusion" theory since we do see both Ruby and Sapphire when they unfused.
>>146737791>>146737815>>146737826Could that potentially work with gay guys (preferably twinks) or only chicks?
>>146737926Absolutely. Look at (any anime)There are guys who hate faggots and yet are into fucking JoJo.
>>146737924God damn. That sounds very fundementally early-to-mid 2010s internet fandom though. Well. Fandom in general. But especially of that time period - it was the era after the 2000s, during which most creatives didn't understand how to use the internet, but before the late 2010s, where they had seen what happened to those who tried and failed and now weren't willing to take the risk. For what it's worth, Alexandrite did always look a bit off to me. She doesn't look "complete", which she technically isn't - it took half a decade, but at least the "all the gems in one" concept ended with a bang and maybe one of the best designs in the series
>>146737941Most of the Jojo guys aren't actually gay for what it's worth. Most. They're just very fuckable.
>>146737771The designs carry hard to the point homophobes seethe the show is not cathered to them

>>146738239>Ruby higher than Sapphire>Garnet near the bottom but Jasper is up top
>>146738239Here's mine. Ranked on fuckability alone, no personality taken into account.
>>146738287Ruby is a better character than Sapphire, even if they work well as a unitGarnet is a character I dislike because - in a series where every character has a major flaw they try to overcome - Garnet's only flaw is that she's sometimes not herself due to no fault of her own.Jasper is up top because she's a character who is immensely flawed, entirely due to her own beliefs and actions, but is still sympathetic and a frankly wonderful foil to all of the nicer, softer characters. This is also why I like Lapis, but not as much, because she's not handled well and comes off as a sad sack rather than a pile of meat and anger.
>>146738311> Smoky Quartz at the bottomI'm probably the only fuck who finds them cute.Captcha: GAYGP
>>146736303It literaly didn't care for its own central plot, and left multiple threads unaddressed. The slice of life crap was insulting, compared to the actual tensions of the plot.It had a truly noticable quality control problem. How does anyone like it?
>>146738311Same-o>>146738344The show's art style doesn't do them justice, but the fundemental design of eight foot tall bitch with shortstack proportions, dark skin, and a self esteem issues makes my gemstone harden. The two arms on one arm thing also does something for me.
>>146736303This moment in Stuck Together was pretty epic with Topaz ready to overthrow her boss. It's just too bad that she decided to pussy out of poofing Aquamarine at the last moment because of hesitation, instead of going for the jugular immediately.
>>146736325>Keep in mind that there were several year-long hiatuses when it was coming out which often resumed with townie episodes, which didn't help.Hiatuses killed /co/'s love for the show more than any other single factor.

>>146738446>I forgot you can edit theseyou can edit everything, anon.
>>146738437Was there any reason SU got shafted this hard? Was it cartoon network being incompetent? The crew? Both?
OP here thanks for helping keep the thread alive : 3 been checking back in What's everyone's favorite fusion? Smokey Quartz ended up being my favorite despite their design being ugly as sin at first glance, I ended up finding them. Incredibly cute, endearing and useful I loved the gameshow episode where the garnet+pearl fusion i forget the name of tries to figure out their purpose only to be needed saving with cool yoyo tricks
>>146738482Cartoon Network. They got really hung up on the "bomb" format and started to hold back on releasing episodes even when they were finished and ready to air. Effectively started to turn every episode into an event. Think like what Nickelodeon did with Spongebob in the late 00s.
>>146738485I really like Opal just for being the first fusion we (knowingly) saw and having a really cool design. After her it's probably Sardonyx, the gem whose name you're forgetting. Really like Malachite too just for the story usage and her design being so weird but not in a totally unappealing way.
Anyone had a "Gemsona" back in the bay? I remember mine. It was essentially Jasper but bigger, edgier, male and about as crazy as picrel.
>>146738578>male gemswe were robbed.
>>146738485Malachite.She's such a fucking monster.
>>146738617Yeah. I liked to headcanon/cope that they existed but were such a rarity, one Gem could likely go through her "whole" existence and never encounter one.
>>146736716>Why do I feel a buildup of air that wants to escape from this end?
>>146737627i'm pushy because it's a cultural touchstone that stays fantastic for 10 seasons plus tip and everyone should watch itwhen the show makes you feel uncomfortable emotions you should observationally detach from your ego and analyze why it makes you feel that waythat's the entire point of the "lows" in adventure time
>>146736882I still don't get how it's the most definitive 'gay' show. Korra definitely did it first. SU's gay pairing isn't even a human one either. They're two gems and the race has no males. It's not there was an 'option' for them to mate hetero when they met.
>>146738675
>>146738977I dunno I found the later seasons pretty mixed and don't think they're actual must-watch material. To each their own but preemptively accusing someone of being a hypocrite is pretty lame dude.
>>146739028we sometimes exaggerate for comedic effect here on the interwebz.
>>146738996Because Korra was a very last-minute decision that was done entirely to try and salvage its reputation, which worked for all of like two years before the flaws just overwrote the "WOO GAY" thing. SU was gay from the start.

>>146738977>for 10 seasons *9 seasons
>>146739923I'm sure it's at least a little conceivable https://files.catbox.moe/te6udu.mp3
>>146738996Because Steven Universe is totally and unabashedly gay. You can't get away from it - it's there from day one. Yes, all gems are female so they don't exactly have the option on homeworld, but when they DO have the option on earth, they still don't take it with the exception of Rose - a bisexual. The entire first season is dominated by Pearl's pining for her dead lover, and Garnet is a walking pair of scissors. And that's only the stuff that's hard confirmed; you can easily see Amethyst as gay for Pearl or Rose and even bisexual for Greg. And if you want to get into all of The Crew's sketchs, then pretty much every character on the damn show is one of the fifty shades of gay.All this to say gay stuff is inseperably wound into the characters of the show. I think it was the first Cartoon Network cartoon to have a gay wedding. At the very least, if not for its own merits as a show, it'll rpobably be historically important for all this.
>>146739610Smoky absolutely trashed Jasper from beginning to end. Peridot delivered the final blow, but there's no way she could have weakened her enough by herself. The crown goes to SQ, no questions asked.

>>146736303I want to fuck this blue chick so fucking hard holy shit
>>146740906Her voice is literally sex incarnate, God I'd love to hear her orgasm
>>146737506I think the reception soured when it was obvious jasper was going to be irredeemable . The months long wait didn’t make the fandom get any smaller, if anything g it only went from strength to strength as there was always writers talking on twitter or leaks appearing out of nowhere . For me it passed me right off with the introduction of Smokey quarts , really ugly design and didn’t match either character . Jasper being side lined, lapis and peridot being side lined , plot being side lined for half assed townie eps. But it was still a great series and kept me coming back to /co/ to discuss and theorise . There never seemed to be a replacement either , nothing since has filled the gaps
>>146739646Greg won.
One thing I think is understated about this series is Steven.People fucking LOVE this kid. I have met people who have been beyond inspired by him. I've met people who decided to have kids, because of him. I've met people who've only half-jokingly compared him to Christ.
>>146742067There are also people who seem to fucking hate him, but in my experience they're people that either didn't watch the show or gave up on it after the first few episodes.
>>146742067Steven is such a fucking autist, but watching him grow over the seasons is actually pretty nice. I like him a lot more as the series went on. I hated future though.

>>146743564>>146743653It's to make it look like threads have more engagement than they do, because when the IP counter was active it showed that even the most active threads were only about 1:6 unique IPs per post.
It just, changes itself. It was mystery, then cartoon therapy, then crying, and more cartoon therapy. Lapis was an enigma turned into a meme, Peridot is based and handled the transition from mystery into meme fairly well. The townspeople omg, it's almost like the show apoligizes for people having normal lives and makes up for it by dedicating episodes to it, in a show about an impending alien invasion. Yes, Twin Peaks did it, yes everyone wants to do it, what they forget is Twin Peaks was cancelled BECAUSE people wanted to get back to the central mystery of WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER. It's not bad, it's frustrating, and what you see is 4channers showing their frustration which is of course by fapping to gem feet and calling everything shit

>>146736303I did the same thing and watched it completely in one long row (right before future started airing) and felt pretty similar. I think a lot of the gripe (beyond the usual 'ugh steven isn't MANLY enough' or 'UGH LESBOS') comes from the release schedule which I heard was pretty awful.
>>146770313It absolutely was. The thing that annoyed people the most is when a story centric episode left the audience with a lot of questions, then a long hiatus later the next episode...is a townie episode. The sheer amount of salt everytime that happened was hilarious.
>>146767043>Sorry, the only thing SU has going for it is the womenThat's how I feel about the whole thing really. I did try to get into SU back in the day but it just never clicked with me. The ladies however, are very nice to look at. Especially Pearl because I live me some cute, pointy noses.
I just can't stop thinking about Steven Bros... The finale of future was so good, I am still baffled thinking about the direction they took things and how well it was tackled. I've never seen a cartoon be able to talk about so many important things in such a presentable way that absolutely any age demographic can see and get something from it I don't think any piece of media has made me cry more than that final episode. When the music hit I just let go of everything, could not hold back how heavy it all was.
>Priyanka my belovedA few years ago I had a (probably shitty) idea for a story, basically an AU of the seriesInstead of Connie, Steven meets Priyanka, who in this continuity doesn't have a kid and wound up separating from her husband after a couple years of marriage. Instead of a doctor she'd probably be something like a college instructor, or maybe a private tutor (I'm not married to these changes,) and while she knows OF Gems and the Gem tech still left over on Earth from the war, she's never really had anything to do with it until she meets Steven. At first she's kind of curious about him, because he's such an odd (but sweet) kid, but over time she wounds up getting wrapped up in his adventures in much the same way Connie did. I figure she'd consider him kind of an adoptive son of nephew figure almost, she'd worry about him and be concerned for his general wellbeing. Steven would probably consider her as something of a mom-figure, at least in the human sense. The Crystal Gems are great and all, but they're not human, and Greg, for as hard as he tries, can't really be the mother-figure Steven would be craving. While getting kind of swept up in his adventures, Priyanka would focus on keeping him safe - he's just a kid after all, he shouldn't be dealing with all this war shit, and he DEFINITELY shouldn't be facing down mortal danger every couple weeks.(cont.)
>>146771474(2/2)In return, Steven would want to do everything he could to protect her - she's not a gem, she doesn't have any powers; she's just an ordinary person who got caught up in shit WAY above her paygrade. While he gains a better understanding of the situation and all through the series, his biggest single motivator for trying to grow up quickly and become the kind of leader Rose Quartz was (except less selfish and stupid, so more like the leader Rose was THOUGHT OF as,) partly as a way to make her proud and so he can protect her better, and partly because he subconsciously wants to impress her and prove that he can take care of himself, but also because he's falling in love with her and doesn't really understand it yet.Once everything's resolved, Steven would wind up asking Priyanka to marry him, the same way he asked Connie, but she'd turn him down too, more for the fact that by this time in the continuity he'd be just barely 18 and she'd be in her early 40's.I can't draw for shit so this would wind up just being a text story, not a comic. Sound remotely worth reading to anybody?
Steven Universe isn't a perfect show but most of it's detractors got their opinion from a video made by a tranny that doesn't understand what a metaphor is
>>146771076It was certainly ambitious, and seemingly well recieved, but never sat right with me. Mostly because I was hoping it would expand on things the original series didn't, which it did in exactly two ways - it expanded on Steven's character, and it expanded on white diamond's weird ass pearl, who almost instantly became one of my favorite characters. It didn't expand on anything else, though. Maybe I went into it with the wrong mindset.also>that pic>lapis interacting with literally any of the main threeNever ever
>>146771592complete plapbait of a fusion
>>146771607>combine the depressed girl who's into abusive relationships, and the only gem with a body count who's lived to tell the tale>get a slutIt's only natural
>>146771537It still cracks me up that those people were constantly reposting a video by a literal fucking tranny
>>146736303I haven't really watched the whole series ever since future was finished. I recall watching a few episodes of season 1 but I never continued it. It's overall nice to hear you did enjoy it though, even with it being as flawed as faggot who's only occasionally not-retarded. Like I still sorta have the oldfag take (as someone who's been with the show since 2013) that if s4 was revamped a bit more and involved more of the plot/storylines in s5, we could've gotten a way more satisfying finale and better season 4 then what we have now>>146771651A peri/ame fusion ends up getting me feeling the same way tooYou just know she'd be even more bottom heavy and shit
>>146771592Holy fucking SEXO what a fusion this is
>>146771803There's at least one more image of her
>>146770498Cute dress
>>146769401It's a message both poorly conveyed and better executed elsewhere, that's the thing.
>>146771474You expected me to read any of this shit while having the gall to post AIslop on top of that? Fuck off.
>>146773556Maybe, but just because others do it better doesn't mean this series isn't good in its own capacity. That's silly
>>146773569Be more of a whiny retarded faggot. I just want to see if it's possible, or if you've achieved the apex of human potential.
>>146744512>that Amethyst.God I'm in love. Imagine the kisses that leave lipstick marks all over your face.
>>146736705>I grew up with early adventure time but grew out of it by the time I was like 15>I remember watching the very early Nick toons animation when it came out and I had my brothers girlfriend at the time knit me a finn hat that I would wear to schoolWe're kindred spirits you and I. I loved the pilot so much that my mom make me a Finn hat and I wore it everywhere as a kid.
I want these two to ask me out on a date
>>146767043I liked Steven Universe back when it was an episodic show about monsters and when they started delving into the whole Homeworld story. It went to shit when it became a townie show that does not even have the monsters in it.
>>146736808>>146736716Greg fucked this!?!
>>146774458It's still weird as fuck to me that after season 1 they entirely dropped gem artifacts, missions, and relegated the corrupted gems to background dressing at best. It's like the first season was establishing what the general episodes of the show would be and then the crew itself forgot about half of them.
You could say that I'm in the market for...*rare* couples
>>146771592Would, 1000% would
>>146773586But even judging it by its own merits it falls short. It's a show completely uninterested in engaging with its own premise ffs.
>>146773644>slopfaggot is a seething schizoYeah, that tracks.
>>146774565Same. I am into Lapis x Pearl.
