I felt the first episode of this series had a similar weird level of tonal whiplash in that starting thing where Andy was trying to fight Immaculate. The jump from dramatic struggle as she's being beaten half to death jumping to some chibi stylized joke version of the other accountants fighting the other Perm Gang members to me felt like it really hurt the scene. It's an odd level of tonal whiplash that I genuinely don't think I've seen outside of anime and anime inspired things. Bertie I think at least had the benefit of the joke only being in the lead up and once she revealed herself as the one behind everything and once she went unbound it was serious the rest of the way through. I just hope this series doesn't do another instance of tonal whiplash like the first episode again.

But look at new shounen they tend to take themselves more seriously and respect the fans more to be able to read and handle deeper and longer series. But these creators tend to replicate the age when they themselves were finding their footing as writers and a genre, because they based it off of our stuff. Andy herself was appalled by their careless disregard of their own daughter and when the two of them started fighting over recruiting Andy it drove that point even harder. It's not perfect since it's weird how they go from a seemingly happy family to caring about nothing but their dumb toe finger fighting style after only one defeat from Poblana, but outside of the suddenness, it feels intentional and something that's supposed to hurt more because the whiplash of their reaction shows how little they care while Andy is fighting back tears and anger.

The frequent attempts at humor are not anywhere near funny or entertaining enough to warrant undermining the serious drama it keeps trying to get us to care about. I don't feel like the show has done enough work to show Andy being taught fundamentals of how to fight or defend herself in the ring which is frusterating when the show is choosing to spending a bunch of time jangling keys trying to get you to laugh at Craig or some goofy chibi skit. When a new match starts, she kindof just downloads the moves she needs to get by and it feels a bit like cheating narratively. Her footwork sliding around the ring when fighting Mbrandon taking out his legs was nuts when all she was taught prior was an ankle crank and how to lean into a punch.It really needs to decide if it wants to primarily be a comedy or an attempt at emulating a more serious shonen, because it can't seem to juggle both very well. Which means this is only one boat ride and a day and a half away from her only having one move against Immaculate. Unless it turns out there was a master trainer on the boat that we just skipped over there's really no explanation for how she's this good already. They could have at least spliced in flashback moments of Andy practicing foot work back on accountant island by herself and smashing her head against rocks and trees to build up a damage tolerance. It would be weird to think she didn't use any of that against Immaculate but at least it would be some explanation for how she can do all this. Any explanation at this point would have been appreciated. It's almost funny how Mikey quickly picks up on how impossibly good Andy is getting and how she just is good enough to be in the ring with people every time she tries. Andy picks up on this too after he mentions it. The cast is aware of her explosive growth and I don't know if that really makes it any better. I don't even think they can really do an "accountants are naturally skilled at analysis so that's why she's learning so fast" thing since we saw Andy was kind of shit at accounting.I don't particularly mind the humor in recent episodes. It was egregiously bad anime in the first episode, but it has been more fine after that. Still, they still could have cut at least one or two jokes to give Andy some training on the side. I know it's sometimes a trope to make anime characters impossibly skilled at young ages but there are some tropes the show could have done without borrowing from.

He's constantly training in between them and we see primarily see the big moments of those training months but we know he's not just waking up one day and is ready to fight his next strong opponent.
