Elves are a vague conglomerate of fantasy creatures hailing from European myth, they didn't go from anything, they all existed in their own corners of Europe until they were collected into an umbrella term under someone codifying these ideas.The Tall Majestic Elves are from stories about Fae and Gods where they're meant to be a race of otherworldly beauty and grace, the tiny elves are from stories about house and woods spirits who cause mischief or lend a hand.
