How did elves go from majestic tall fantasy creatures to this
>>
>>146895412
Just lucky I guess.
>>
>>146895412
Do you mean in universe or in mythology.

In universe i guess lack of resources and being enslaved by a fat guy, OOU i'm pretty sure elves have always been tiny creatures, either that or human sized light spirit creatures, Tolkien was the one that wanted to make them tall mostly civilized supermen with powerful spirits

>A majority of Elvish race left Earth long ago to journey to Alfheimr, ceding the world to the rising race of Man, but a surprising number chose to remain behind in secluded locales.
>Over time, their dwindling numbers and crushing isolation led a few Elves to interact with the outside world, confident in their supposed superiority.
>However, by this time the world of man had fallen into barbarity after the fall of ancient kingdoms such as Atlantis and Lemuria.
>These new savage men would capture and ravish all manner of creature from demons and angels to common fae folk, spawning monstrous hybrids. The Elves were no exception to this and each subsequent generation diluted the blood of the Elves, reducing their stature and abilities.
>These offshoots of Elves would also mate with fae folk, further shrinking them below even human height. Seeking safety, many went back into seclusion in small communities or lone hideouts.
>These new Elves now had to support themselves in the world of Man. Small groups of elves would perform chores for humans at night in exchange for food or or other gifts. Larger groups would assist humans in their businesses, such as baking or cobbling.

They're not elves, they're Nisse. It's just when the tradition came over Nisse got translated to Elves.

I like the in universe explanation

Elves are a vague conglomerate of fantasy creatures hailing from European myth, they didn't go from anything, they all existed in their own corners of Europe until they were collected into an umbrella term under someone codifying these ideas.
The Tall Majestic Elves are from stories about Fae and Gods where they're meant to be a race of otherworldly beauty and grace, the tiny elves are from stories about house and woods spirits who cause mischief or lend a hand.
>>
>>146895412
There's a lich out there that witnessed Santa tame and domesticate Elves over several thousand years.
>>
>>146896008
>>146895634
Basically both of these. Toss in the fact that alv(elf) and troll both had a tendency to be catch-all terms for all things fey, as well.
>>
>>146895412
Generations of their women betraying their race to fuck human men which just made them more attractive making them smaller and smaller
>>
>>146895412
That is an American Elf.
>>
>>146895934
Is she tall or short in that, and if she was tall, would she have been shrunken down into a shortstack after Santa's takeover?
>>
>>146897302
>Human-Elf war
>Humans win using their superior magic (trust me, all the powerful liches were human so they have to be the best)
>Elves were forced into tiny bodies which couldn't even hold a dagger without struggle

Christmas Elves are actually a subspecies of Gnome. They were mistaken for Elves by other denizens of the Arctic, who had heard of Elves before but never seen one. The Gnomes didn't bother to correct them, so the name stuck.
>>
>>146895412
Elves were like that before Tolkien. Elves were every kind of weird little creature before Tolkien. It was the same as a fairy or sprite - just a weird little critter of otherworldly origin
>>
>>146897362
>>146897369
Imagine hating humans and then being forced to make toys for them every year by some fat guy who enslaved you
>>
>>146898177
That “fat guy” is a saint. He’s got powers none of the Fair Folk can stand against. If he wants to shrink you down to a Keebler and make toys, it’s off to the assembly line with you.
>>
High Elves becoming Christmas Elves is definitely a strange yet novel idea.

>>146895412
The Immortal Claus conquered their home and ended their tyranny. As punishment he made them become humble toy makers and taught of simple yet true joys like singing and holiday cheer. It’s come to the point where the later generations now prefer the workshop to what they once had.

Selective breeding for the perfect living onahole.

>hmmm... this "Santa Claus" can travel the world in a single day, and is evidently a wizard of great power. Perhaps I will attempt an alliance? What's the worst that can happen?

So, they're gnomes?

Really like this idea
>Great grandmother: Ta'bih'ell, ancient Elf, so great with a bow she could aim the wrong way and still hit her target dead on, taller than any human male, one of the first deployed in the war on humans
>Grandmother: Tae'shal, Elf sage, so graceful she could jump into a pile of leaves and make no noise, one of the last to enlist in the war, missed most of her targets, taller than most men
>Mother: Alena, Elf diplomatic representative, known for her specialization in Elf-Human relations, average height for a human, short for Elf standards
>Daughter: Anna, Elf that grew up in a mostly human village, good with her hands, shorter than most men
>Granddaughter: Eve, Elf that followed her mom's footsteps and became a toy-smith like so many others, good with woodworking, shorter than most humans
>Great granddaughter: Hollybell, Elf often mistaken for a gnome by the humans in the city, great at making electronic toys the kids nowadays ask for, about average height for a modern Elf, aka shorter than a human child

>Miss Holly is the current Executive Assistant to the Big Guy. She started as a clerk in the North Pole Post Office, and then worked as a junior assistant under Mrs. Tannenbaum, Santa’s former Executive Assistant. When Mrs. Tannenbaum moved on to Toy Design, Miss Holly assumed the role.
>Likes: Miss Holly likes the new calendar software update for her data pad, which allows her to schedule meetings up to thirty years in advance.Miss Holly loves her subscription to L’Elf fashion magazine, and harbors dreams of one day being the editor in chief.
>Dislikes: Although seemingly unapproachable due to her fashionable appearance and strict demeanor, Miss Holly longs for a more active social life, hopeful that someone will ask her to this year’s Christmas party.
>Random Fact: Miss Holly always finds herself in need of a fresh mug of Fun Nog every Thursday at 10:30. Coincidentally, that is the same time that Brett, the rugged Fun Nog Cooler Service Elf, is delivering a fresh supply on his broad shoulders. Miss Holly’s mother thinks she can do better.

>Magee has been the North Pole Christmas Eve Command Center Coordinator for almost 200 years. Before her current post, she proved her managerial prowess as part of Toy Design, where she was credited with streamlining the development pipeline. She assumed her career would be in toys, but the Big Guy personally asked her to oversee Prep & Landing as NPCECCC, a role once held by Magee’s own mother. Magee receives a fair amount of unsolicited advice from her mother, especially when it comes to work and romance. Her mother initially held out hope that Wayne and Magee would marry, but the pair dated only briefly and instead became close friends.

>Likes: Magee loves egg nog lattes, one after the other. She prefers Yuletide Joe beans, but also enjoys selections from her International Coffee of the Month Club.
>Dislikes: Magee doesn’t like when Wayne offers friendly suggestions on how to better do her job.
>Random Facts: Magee makes her own jingle bell jewelry in her spare time (around 3 a.m.), convinced it helps relieve stress. On Wednesdays during off-peak months, Magee teaches Remedial Jewelry Making at the Rec Center. Magee is an avid figure skater, but hasn’t figured out how to skate and make jewelry at the same time yet, but she is determined to find a way.

Assuming the "majestic tall fantasy elves" still exist, either there are radically different kinds of elves, or "elf" is just a label that can be applied to all kinds of unrelated beings, much like how plants of very different lineages get lumped together as "trees".
