Bump if you're reading.
And that's it. If you liked this, support your LCS or whatever.
I hated it. The worst issue so far.

The best Absolute book so far, although I can't stop staring at Diana's nose

another great issue. the best art that the big 2 is publishing, and i enjoy both the story and diana's characterization. she feels very aspirational and heroic.

some ironic (or unironic, idgaf) shillposting ITT aside, the story seems good. like bro said, this is a berserk redo, but since it would be cool to see guts interact with DC characters that's not a bad thing (yet). If anything, I'm more annoyed by the clear lesbo art style. seriously, there were so many shots in the island flashback where at least some chest would have been visible, since that is how actual irl clothes work. but no, it is still current year and male gayz bad. no, this is not about the schnozz, i actually fuck with that. It's not even the muscles, it's the constant fridge bodswhatever, not that it matters when absolute threads on this board are already dying, we have like no genuine posters discussing this rn

I think the best Absolute book so far was Batman's #3 since it dove into the lore of that setting enough to get it beyond the stupidness of the first couple of issues, but this one was great. Great artwork. I loved this depiction of the tetracide >>146899382I feel like I want to see the story move forward more quickly, especially since that's what Bruce's and Clark's books seem to be doing, but it is working for Diana. She is depicted as a true warrior and hero here. I think WW can be difficult to write effectively, but Thompson is doing a good job so far.Is this the first time in this series where she is depicted with bird symbolism? I don't know what the peacock feathers would mean, but the owl on the cover looks like a clear nod to Barbara's introduction in this issue.I can't really tell what kind of animal whose spine, ribcage, and skull is depicted on the cover. Could it be a head of the Hydra?>>146901477Barbara obviously parallels Casca. As for Griffith, I think it will be one of the gods. We already know Apollo is antagonistic toward her, so they won't have an amicable foundation to get ruined. Maybe Ares or Hades?
>>146899377This needs another artist.

Wild that this is the only good Absolute title so far.
>>146903451"What if Wonder Woman was Guts but doing Buffy's job over a hellmouth" is pretty hard to fuck up. Absolute Batman abandons its premise almost immediately since despite being """"poor"""" he still ass pulls all the same gadgets but we're just supposed to pretend they're improvised even though they're just as if not more effective than regular Batman's, and despite not being a billionaire he still has city spanning information networks and knowledge of all of Gotham because he worked as an intern a couple places.
>>146901437Let me guess, the Twitter Wonder Woman fans are saying this because they are obsessed with Cheetah and Wonder woman pairing
>>146903584I think he probably stole everything he needed for that giant batmobile or whatever it's supposed to be. I wouldn't say that they've completely abandoned the initial premise, since having him essentially make a deal with the devil to come into wealth is going to result in consequences that his mainline version would not encounter.
>>146902048"Pretentious" means something pretending to have greater importance and depth than it actually possesses. This is not an edgy deconstruction of Wonder Woman, it's not a """subversion""" or trying to make some meta commentary, it's literally a 100% straightforward and earnest story of a brave hero defending people from monsters because it's the right thing to do and trying to be an aspirational example. This is among the LEAST pretentious books D.C are currently putting out, if anything it's refreshingly uncomplicated and unapologetic. Wonder Woman doesn't bitch about how privileged Steve is for not being raised in Hell and how he doesn't deserve a strong independent woman to save him or about how actually all soldiers are servants of imperialism so he deserves to rot in the underworld, she thinks he's a good man and knows a sacrifice can help him so she gives up her own arm to free him without a second thought because to her it's the Right Thing to Do (TM)
>>146899394I've seen enough hentai to know where this is going.
>>146902243It's got good art and good writing, therefore it's pretentious."Pretentious" is the midwit's favorite insult when something's actually quite good but they want to win some good little contrarian points by hating it.See also: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Monster.
>>146899422>>146899435They want her to be Guts so bad.
I don't know why everyone is calling her Guts beyond some superficial similarities (giant sword and missing arm) they're nothing alike. Diana is brusque but never really rude and is constantly putting the safety of others first. Guts for most of the book is an asshole using his unpleasantness as a way to keep people away from him
liking this the most of all the absolute booksthat said the pacing feels it needs to pick up a bit
>>146904677I agree. They've got to get away from the Gateway City coastline next month or it may get boring.
>>146904694even just within this issue just feels that it ended just a couple scenes too early- I get the visual of the green cloud going over the city feels a good cliffhanger, but unless they're going in a weird direction with the story, then it feels the more natural cliffhanger would've been the populace becoming deaf and having an immediate reaction shot of it
>>146904552Guts is like that at the start because he had a horrible upbringing that made him actively push people away for fear of getting attached, if he was raised by Circle he'd be a lot like Absolute wondy and you can see the comparison better by looking at how he acts near the ending of Berserk when he's not such a wreck
>>146900339It's the best book so far out of the Absolute line
>>146901028It's the absolute line seems to suffer from the fact there seemingly is no real end goal for these books the way the Ultimates has with "Stop the Maker"
Having a magic arm is cool
>>146905305>It's the absolute line seems to suffer from the fact there seemingly is no real end goal for these booksI'm pretty sure we're just looking at these counterparts lives until booster gold comes back into the story.
>>146899377im bored. only the first issue satisfied me
>>146905305>the way the Ultimates has with "Stop the Maker"But that's just with the Ultimates though. Spider-Man, The X-Men, Black Panther their just doing their own thing. Now to be fair, two of those books are dealing with the Maker Council but outside of that, they don't really care to stop the maker. Who knows what will happen when they all band together
>>146899435>>146899436how the hell did they manage to build a backup arm with this much functionality that far down the underworld's taint? is this a box of scraps situation? it has fucking gears!
>>146906077Hephaestus
>>146903650nigga what could i possibly else mean
>>146905305Batman's and Superman's Absolute stories have set up gigantic shadow organizations. Batman has what looks like Joker funding Black Mask and his party animals plus the Arks being set up all over the world, and Superman has a repressive corporate military police going by Lazarus. I haven't seen any real indication that these books are taking place in a shared universe, and the fact that neither WW or Bats have encountered Lazarus could indicate that they don't. However, it's entirely likely that Lazarus is only operating in the Global South. WW has the Harbingers and the Tetracide, which is quite different from the other two, but it's possible they could have been summoned. Hell, Braniac may have done it as a pretense for Lazarus to operate in the united states. Joker's cartel and Lazarus could be working together. So there are substantial threats to the world in each of these books, and in the case of Wonder Woman and Batman, each of them has admitted they don't have what it takes to go it alone. That makes me think that Superman will come to a similar conclusion in his #3. These things together with the fact that Flash and Martian Manhunter are getting Absolute books makes me think they are building up to an Absolute Justice League. The Justice League seems like a natural step for them all to take as characters who have been stripped of the support structures they have had in the main canon.

>>146906397>These things together with the fact that Flash and Martian Manhunter are getting Absolute books makes me think they are building up to an Absolute Justice League.I figured that was the natural conclusion with the announcement of Absolute Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter getting announced and coming out in 3 months

Is this first time Thompson put out a real book?
I think Orson Welles had to something to say about homages.
>>146901028>the story seems goodI agree. In full disclosure, I've never read Wonder Woman except for The Hiketeia (which was nice) and for that matter it would be safe to say I haven't read any DC because I am prejudiced against capeshit. I haven't read Berserk either because likewise prejudiced against pretty much that comes out of Japan especially shit that has run for as long as Berserk has like One Piece or Dragon Ball. And then there's the shit like Attack on Titan that ended but not without incessantly lying to readers and hitting every storytelling error and trope on the way down.I seriously don't have any faith in comics anymore, the last thing I read was Saga and that has shit itself in such spectacular fashion it deserves an award for somehow being more shit than Star Wars and the Russians would probably use as the poster child of Western decline. I don't know why I read this given my biases and my shared sense with you that this board is practically already dead and the continued conversations about webcomics that have long become shit stands out moreso than the capeshit that everyone here has no fucking standards anymore. Maybe because there was a storytime and I was fucking bored but I am so happy I'm reading this story.Knowing nothing about Diana before, this character seems wonderful because (and it is rare to say this sincerely) she is earnest, forthright, innocently kind, and strong - like a homeschooled kid who had capable parents. The mother, knowing nothing about her character before either, really sells the infectiousness of becoming a parent. She is in exile, driven to endure, strong, and you get the sense that having no way to indulge in selfishness, she spends her will and energies to raising a good child, possibly out of spite to her jailers.I fucking love how often the little critters Diana befriends appear in all the panels or sleeping beside Steve. I love that the animals also love Steve.
>>146907868You've made a pretty great description of what makes Diana a compelling character and how we're seeing her at her best so far in this series. She is especially refreshing in 2024 in an age of morally grey brooding antiheroes.I have fairly similar tastes to what you describe, although when I was younger I did devour a lot of shonen manga. Western cape comics have never really interested me, but I at one point ended up giving Batman a try and ended up really appreciating the archetypal characterization seen in DC's trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. I don't follow their ongoing series, but I show up for books like this.If you enjoyed The Hikateia, there are some other short Wonder Woman stories worth checking out. JLA: League of One has beautiful painted artwork. It's about Diana taking on an ancient dragon which only she can defeat. I really enjoyed Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, though I understand a lot of people did not. As the title suggests, she wakes up in an apocalyptic wasteland. It devolves a bit into cape comic tropes toward the end, but it still sticks a satisfying ending. It begins with a powerful hook that will have you pulling for her as she goes against all odds. Sensational Wonder Woman is an anthology a la Legends of the Dark Knight so it's something you can pick up and put down as you please. Wonder Woman: The True Amazon is a solid retelling of her origin. Wonder Woman: Earth One is my personal favorite of the E1 titles. It's a Grant Morrison book, though, which some people don't like. He doesn't go off the rails with it until the end, and it does a serviceable deconstruction of the idea of Wonder Woman as savior. The last I'll mention is Azzarello's run on Wondy for the New 52. I did not much care for it, but I'm not a big Azzarello fan either. I only bring it up because a lot of people say it was the best series from the New 52.
>>146907998Thanks for the recommendations. I will get them and read them because despite how fucking bad /co/ has become the recommendations here on 4chan are the only online ones I trust anymore.>>146899457I cried a bit after thinking about this page. Here is a person who for the past hour the world has watched repel a literal monster and is doing battle with another bigger one. She is plainly and obviously better than all of us and she sacrifices a moment to bother warning everyone she's about to visit some temporary harm upon them all and then, this person who is clearly better than you, asks for your help to help her and she says she believes in you. There are few stories or moments where the author somehow crafts a character and moments that would have Jesus take notes and these past few issues of Absolute are definitely that. Even if this story ends up totally shitting itself towards the end it has already proven itself to be beautiful up to this point. It could just end fucking here without the next to-be-continued page and I'd be completely fine. It's going to be so fucking bad that something like this isn't going to take off. I'm not tired of capeshit movies or shows because I never watched that shit but the rest of the population is and won't give this the time of day. Like something like this has to find its way into the hands of teenagers before they leave high school so they don't enter the world aiming towards nihilism. There's no future generation of people who have a /co/ to give them gold like this. Arcane committed suicide by introducing time travel and all /co/ could do is go on and on about shipping.
