Well I've finally got my rant done about how PauloxDaisy has the potential to be interesting. The only thing I forgot to put in it is that Daisy would perceive Paulo as only going after Lucy. Hopefully I unfry the brain of that one anon from last thread with this.

BCB fails at being a slice of life comic because it's characters aren't endearing and unique enough to sufficiently pull it off. The common theme of the chapters are also very uninspired.
The comic could lean into the more absurd and succeed that way comedically or write something very relatable.
Instead its just "Blahblah school setting, bland thing happens." earlier on it did at least try to do slapstick and I guess somewhat crude humor? But it's lost all it's edge and style and is extremely watered down from what it used to be.

BCB fails as a romance because the characters are not unique or compelling enough, the characters have too much overlap in personality because Taeshi literally cannot write what she does not know.

Thus everyone defaults to BPD personality, anger issues cuz shitty parents or being a le-stupid-and-or-nice character fill in.

The shitty-parent angsty ones are the closest it gets to being good, but she decided Abbey and Augustus were played out and would rather focus on Paulo/Mike/Lucy/Daisy pissing and shitting over stupid melodrama instead which
usually amounts to 'WAAH, WHY WON'T x LOVE ME?!"

I don't care about any of these characters because they are all shitty and awful. In order to make this plot work it would need an entirely different writer who is less insane and more mature.

Oh yeah I agree with this, it's just that I was trying to show the potential of a PauloxDaisy arc getting more into a pursing of dreams vs. love type deal. All of the previous ones the characters never really discussed the future other than maybe Paulo and Jasmine. Rachel couldn't discuss the future with Paulo and kept him in the dark (well, very obvious hints that he couldn't pick up on) about wanting to actually stay together. Of course, any actual interesting plot developments rely on it not amounting to "WAAH, WHY WON'T x LOVE ME?" and maybe something more interesting like "Do I put off my dreams for x." or "Do I string x along until I go off to pursue my dreams." Which I believe these more interesting questions Daisy has enough forward thinking to introducing into the plot. (If the chance is taken)

Yeah it's basically splitting. People are either all good or all bad. If they are "perceived" as all bad from good, someone with BPD will often go through devaluation - where all their once good attributes are twisted to be all horrible.
Then it can shift frequently, so they'll be the scum of the earth unworthy of your time to a perfect flawless angel of a person.

There also is a low tolerance for abugity. So somebody has to be constantly screaming their adoration from the top of a mountain and constantly tending to them for someone with BPD to feel "secure". If someone is vague with their emotions or not entirely comfortable with people totally honest 100 percent of the time - something most humans do - then that can be cause for splitting.

-Characters have too much overlap in personalities and all behave nearly identically.
-This means every character acts as if they have Borderline Personality Disorder because the creator is too crazy and childish to write anything else.
-Lack of stakes (School setting, the biggest things is friends getting pissed with each other, no typical teen drama plots)
-Repeated plotlines and chapters
-Constantly resetting status quo
-Dropped plotlines (Alejandro, Sandy's mom modeling drama, Lucy's therapy and recovery, Abbey's therapy)
-Constant teasing and dismal of romantic couples for view-farming - in spite of the comic's main draw being "romance"
-Lack of good comedy, romance and drama
-Tedious retconning of previous chapters

This chapter sucks because DaisyXPaulo is a bad and boring ship, there's no faith that the things that could make it interesting (their fundamental incompatibility) will be addressed, and the setup to getting them together was a Lucy ex machina which had to bend space and logic to get Daisy to gush about her feelings to Lucy because ???, while Paulo somehow overheard from a space that was without space until he popped back into visible existence.

Also, the Burgertron's layout and location is apparently a shifting nightmare: the interior is a bizarre non-euclidean geometry of angles and spaces that can't exist, and the street location apparently slid from downtown to a rural road next to a forest. It's not interesting, because the plotlines are recycled. How many times has Paulo had a crush he confessed to? How many people has he dated? How many times has his heart been broken? Same with Daisy, how many unrequited love moments has she had? Had many emotional blowups that play out exactly the same everytime do we need?

It fails to be compelling because Taeshi fundamentally does not know how to structure narratives or write characters you can be invested it. Why? Why should I care about Paulo's romances if he is constantly crushing on people and dating so many? Why would it matter when nearly every outcome is the same? Because there's been no development on the part of the characters. THAT'S why it was boring. Eternal Flame was interesting for a while because it seemed like Mike and Lucy were finally gonna grow as people, but the ending happened to reinforce the status quo. This chapter had NO emotional growth for these characters, Daisy didn't have to face her fears and Paulo didn't have to grow past his aversion to affection towards Daisy. There were hardly any hints Paulo actually liked Daisy, she was right to be scared! For less perceptive readers, this may have come out of nowhere on Paulo's end. Here's some ways Taeshi could have made this more interesting.

>paulo overhears lucy and daisy talking in school from behind a corner but only hears part of it that makes him wonder what that was all about for the first day, until he confronts her. daisy could run away, causing paulo to run after her again or she could be cornered and have no choice but to spill the beans herself.

>daisy gets bullied arc. because how the fuck are you gonna tell me this nerdy fat girl isn't getting bullied in the 2000s? not possible. anyway, paulo gets pissed and tracks down the bullies and daisy is impressed at how far he's going for her. maybe he has some passionate confession in the midst of beating their fucking asses and he gets suspended and daisy goes to his house and they have their moment there.

>another girl comes into the picture. she's a lot like daisy, smart and sweet, kinda curly but thinner and has slightly bigger breasts. at first she and daisy are friends, perhaps meeting in their advanced class, maybe she's a transfer student and daisy offers to show her around and she integrates into the main group, but she gains an eye for paulo and realizes daisy's insecurities and turns out to be a catty pickme bitch and constantly tries to throw daisy under the bus to earn paulo's affection. dealing with this whore could be a great opportunity for character development for the both of them.

But instead it's zero effort on their part. Daisy vents to a friend who already offered to hear her out without her having to actually tell anyone she's in pain, and Paulo hears the conversation oh-so conveniently. I don't understand why Taeshi strays away from more emotionally powerful plotlines, she has BPD and grew up on those overdramatic shoujo animes, where's the drama?

I don't know who you're talking to, but I actually like this comic for the art and that it's a time capsule for a very specific point in the 2000's (which I wish the artist would stop trying to undo with redrawing all of it). It was also fun when it was a deconstruction of the tsundere trope.
Though, I will admit the artist seems very burned out and is just phoning it in at this point.

Personally, I found Eternal Flame interesting in the same way someone spontaneously swerving into traffic is interesting. It opened with Mike and Paulo both getting the reset button, then went into assassinating Sandy's character offscreen, then Mike freaking out and acting out of character, then Lucy popping into existence at just the right time and place, followed by lies and desperation as >>147121972 said, then finally confirmation that Lucy is insane. Oh, but actually none of that nonsense mattered, because Lucy's still mad at Mike and Mike's still hung up on Sandy.

It was a mess from start to finish, entertaining largely due to the slightly nervous sense of "where is this gonna go?" stemming from the knowledge that Taeshi loves School Days.

I think a big issue actually is that Sandy doesn't even HAVE a character. She's this huge device driving the plot forward, but we never get to know what she's up to. The comic would be a lot better if we got glimpses into her life and what the felt as she ghosted Mike. I'm sure Taeshi will drop it all in one big chapter down the line but it would feel a lot more gratifying and suspenseful if we got these snippets along the way.

Honestly, it feels like BCB is Taeshi working out her BPD in real time, rather than something made with the intention to tell a good, coherent story. Character's motivations switch on a dime, the people they like switch on a dime, none of these dudes actually act like teenage boys aside from Paulo who acts like what someone THINKS a teenage boy would act like. Paulo always jumps straight to violence without any kind of attempted gaslighting and denial first. When it comes to Lucy, she gets away with EVERYTHING, people get angry at her until she drops some final line nobody knows how to respond to and they just shut the fuck up and listen, but that doesn't happen in reality.

BCB during 2009-2011 was the peak of the comic because it felt like Taeshi actually cared about making interesting shit happen, but now it feels like it's all about showing off how much of a ~*superior healed borderline*~ she is.
