General Transformers thread, sort of. I have a few thoughts as a returning fan.I stopped being into Transformers shortly after the end of Animated. Never watched Prime. I've been returning to TF lately, watched clips of Earthspark, the Bay films, Prime, and finally saw Transformers: One a few days ago. I've also been reading the IDW comics and just finished All Hail Megatron. I've been enjoying the IDW comics for the most part, with a few absolutely retarded issues (Spotlight: Arcee, Cliffjumper, the whole THE DARKNESS Arc, the weird retconning back and forth...), and I am excited for MTME and RID. As for TF:One, I thought it was good and I had fun watching it, though it did remind me of why I've dropped the franchise before. tldr; Hasbro needs to make up its mind if they're going to cater to new fans/kids, or older fans.More in depth; Transformers is already a hard sell from the getgo. Alien robots that transform into vehicles is going to be alienating (heh) to most casual viewers/fans. I can only see the franchise making money from autists who can bypass that barrier, but most of these fans are going to be adults with their own money. And most adults want slightly more mature stories. I am not talking blood and gore, or sex even, but the stories need more complexity and personally I think all the robots need design overhauls to make them less blocky and lego-like if they want to appeal to wider audiences so that they can make enough money to keep the franchise alive. As a returning fan, I do enjoy the slightly more mature vibe of IDW and TF:One, but ultimately it doesn't quite live up to that maturity - by chickening out when any sort of complexity is introduced, by reducing the violence (TFOne in particular), and the constant retcons are not doing anything any favours. Hasbro is the king of "safe", but ultimately I think this safety will doom this franchise to death once all the hardcore fans get too old or too tired. Anyway, talk about some robots.
I miss Hot Rod
>>147096453I really loved the old Mainframe shows the most. Beast Wars, Reboot and War Planets. I know only 1 is Transformers but they're kind of a trinity in my eyes. Beast Wars despite the old cgi will probably never be topped for me. The writing, characters and mysteries with all the alien stuff was just too good.
>>147096453>movie flopped for unknown reasons>new game gets cancelledis it over for this franchise?
>>147096483>>movie flopped for unknown reasonsIt was marketed as a kids movie and kids don't care about Transformers. They should've marketed it to its niche adult audience and it would've sold better.
>>147096465watch Cyberverse and read Void Rivals.
what was the most memorable thing he ever did other than having one 1 cool line in the '86 movie?
>>147097088In the cartoon he's part of the season 3 ensemble, but nothing really more memorable than having better things to do tonight than die.In the comics he got to lead the Autobots' commando squad, and trying to fill the shoes of their previous leader who got TWO heroic deaths.
>watching BW>find Silverbolt and Blackarachnia a cute couple so I search for fanart of thembiggest mistake of my life
>>147097139thats a problem with Transformers shippers, even the straight ones like Optimus X Elita still depict Optimus as a bottom who likes to be pegged by his wife. these people can't fathom the man being the man in the relationship not even Optimus goddamn Prime, who is the space dad of all 80s kids.
If (you) could make a new transformers series, with the caveat you have to put at least one literal who on each faction, who'd be your starting cast? >>147096604The franchise is basically dead if kids don’t care, look at GI Joe. Kids liked Beast Wars, Armada, the 07 movie, and even RiD 2015. Those revitalized the franchise at needed points.

The dinobots kicked so much ass even 'cons respected that.

>>147100384He looks pretty rad. Shame he got relegated to a DoTM MT toy.He looks like he'd fit Galaxy Force/G1 way better.
>>147100818A lot of the trilogy non-movie toys are like that, they feel like they could be part of the UT/Classics.Even the Movie 1 screen-bots feel more like Cybertron versions of them than movie accurate
>>147100845Love the camo, but damn is that gun clunky. Even the chestplate that's effectively the rotors looks awkward, but I appreciate they tried to make it look like a harness and minimise kibble.Still neat though.
>>147100845I didn't even know other toys used the same mold lolCan't fault them I guess, I'm a fan of the design.I always thought it'd be cool if he could detach two of the helicopter blades to use as swords and the other two to spin around really fast in front of him as a shield thing. When shielding he could use those burner things on his legs to hold him in place so he doesn't fly off from the force.I dunno, I just always loved this one-off bot. Looked cool.
>>147096453I don't think I've ever seen any movie or game being done this dirty by it's trailer before. I went in expecting Buzz & Woody with a more hormonal D-16 and I got a good-looking story of Megatron's change that was written so well that I fell for the character even when I disagreed with him.

I'm looking forward to the Age of The Primes line of figures coming this year
This is pure personal opinion but I have two key things I want out of the 13 Primes used consistently moving forward.>Zeta Prime should be the 13th, last before OptimusForget Optimus being some sort of reincarnated bullshit. Just have Zeta be his predecessor, and base is design off TFO's. >Liege Maximo shouldn't be evil, merely misunderstood I never liked the idea of Liege Maximo being literal satan. Two have 2 deceitful Primes kinda makes Megatronus's fall/betrayal lesser. To me Liege Maximo should be "The Prime of Lies" in the sense that he's essentially the "Loki" of the Transformers universe. Not a trickster and shifter like Amalgamus Prime, but more the Prime that was forged to think outside the box and lie. He looks terrifying to scare the enemies of cybertron, he deceives and has dark thoughts so he can understand evil in an effort to confront it. After all early Cybertronians were very much set in their ways, beings of specific function. It makes sense that a Prime like Liege would be the start of bots developing concepts of lying and making choices
>>147102169>have 2 deceitful Primes kinda makes Megatronus's fall/betrayal lesser3 if you count Quintus for being the creator of the Quintessons
>>147099879what I don't get is why he makes such a big deal about honor when historically the decepticons (and by consequence the predacons) always used underhanded tactics
>>147102434See that's another thing; I don't want Quintus to be the Quintesson creator, nor do I want Quintessons creating cybertronians.I think its best if Quintessons had a brief occupation of early Cybertron, exploiting the infant/impressionable bots who mostly upheld their functions. Quintus should be the Prime that either tried to negotiate with the Quintessons, or helped unveil the lie to start a resistance. Like for example lets say Prima, Solus, and maybe one or two other Primes were imprisoned after the Quintessons showed up, Quintus may have been the next Prime forged that helped save his brothers. He could have even been the middle man "leader" of Cybertron that later became a Prime after discovering the truth
>>147102480I think it's better if Quintus created the Quintessons but his creation somehow got corrupted similar to Hank Pym and Ultron
>>147102512Disagree entirely. Quintessons work better as purely alien, invaders that are a dark period of Cybertron's history. They're techno-organic bureacrats who favor business/profit. It makes total sense that they would want Energon
>>147102169So weird that Age of Primes Liege Maximo looks like a background demon from Spawn when his TFO self looks dignified
>>147102545They're basing Liege's design of the original Marvel comic incarnation, when he first debuted. Same thing with Megatronus having his IDW design.

>>147102678>Ratchet is actually a major lore character while Ironhide is a literal who)Depends if you're a comic guy or a cartoon guy. Ironhide had a bigger role in the cartoon, and as one of Optimus' oldest friends was one of the only guys who would openly question him.

>>147106246Human females craves Cybertronian males, anon. And I think Cybertronian females prefer Cybertronian males.
>>147106575This might be your own narrow experiences anon. Plenty of kids my age liked Transformers in the 2000's. There's a reason they kept making toys. They wouldn't be making them just for 20+ year olds before the collector market really eclipsed the kid's market in the 2010s. >And if I have to imagine a reason Transformers struggles so much in particular is the franchise never truly established enough mainstay characters to keep momentumIrony is, attempting to chase that is what's stagnating the franchise now. In the 90's-2000's, Hasbro was basically"do whatever" with the franchise. Around Prime onward, in the wake of the movies, they started shifting to what you're suggesting: keeping things consistent, regular casts...and it's also been a time of stagnation for the cartoons. Not that the 2000's cartoons or even Beast wars were runaway hits, but they did survive and got toys on shelves and kept afloat. Now it's been like 8 years where Optimus always has to largely resemble his 80's self in most series, which itself was based off a 70's truck, so we're trying to keep things similar to a nearly 50 year old design with just some updated bits, instead of really trying something new. Transformers wasn't ever designed to really be like superhero franchises where it maintains consistency, it should have some classic elements while it evolves to suit the times.
>>147106873Yeah, it kinda suck when Optimus and Megatron are the center of the franchise, when the first Marvel Comics had bloody Ratbat and Circuit Breaker (a filthy fleshbag) has the Decepticons leader.
>>147106890>Circuit BreakerMan I still can't believe they bothered to make sure Marvel would keep the rights to the character.

>>147102951I would prefer Minerva as fembot doctor.
I mean, it really just depends on the person. Kids are fickle and rarely have a set interest from childhood to adulthood unless they're autistic (not to say it's the only reason, just that is a common factor in many cases), and of course older fans may or may not have grown out of the franchise for various reasons (lack of money to buy the toys, disappointment with the shows/movies/comics, etc). The franchise definitely needs to make some bolder changes, especially since it's clear that sticking to too many constants (Optimus and Megatron as the leaders, similar teams, only Cybertron and Earth as settings) is clearly wearing thin for some people or not even catching the interest of others. It might be time to see something akin to Beast Wars, maybe even going a step further with new leaders. Prime being a title has been established for decades now, and while Rodimus was very divisive, I would think as long as a new Prime is introduced without the highly questionable origin of Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime, fans would be accepting of a newcomer. Heck, just to be bold, why not have a Prime who was once a Decepticon that defected to the Autobots? That would alone add a plethora of intrigue and layers to a new leader who has to live up to the legacy of Optimus, but also contend with their former allegiance.
I just want more of stupid sexy Starscream.
>>147100788That's literally the tetrajets
I'm getting tired of Shockwave being regulated to small appearances for the "Oh Shit!" factor. I wish he could be with the Decepticons instead of being on Cybertron all the time.
>>147106873I say it's time for Firetruck Optimus.
>>147108452That's makes him more special and memorable.
>>147108494But every time? How's he supposed to have that memorable factor if they use that trick everytime?
>uses fucking TIME powers in G1>never brought up or mentioned againHer name is literally "Elita 1"11 as in first, PRIMEBoom, there's a free hacky story idea you can use as you wish.
>>147106587also by Animated Megs
>>147102678>>147105551weird part is, Ironhide and Bulkhead could co-exist without much issue. Ironhide being an edgy gruff son of a bitch like a Brock Sampson or Wolverine type while Bulkhead is physically strong but is this big teddie bear of a bot, also could be a labourer and or a engineer as well. besides Ironhide and Ratchet sharing a design if anything should make it easier to justify having them if you're adamant on saving money on character models. we can have Arcee and Elita both in the same projects even though they're both pink fembots.
>>147109393Makes sense. Ironhide is usually portrayed as being very gungho while Bulkhead has at least twice been showed as a big lovable oaf. Could even be a chance to address things like how Prime made Wheeljack a wrecker instead of a medic, maybe having him either go into medicine because he wanted to do more than just wreck shit or something to that effect.
>>147106353Given how Hasbro's been basically fumbling every IP they've had in recent years. Probably for the best they cancel all major projects for a bit and re-figure out what they want to do with one of their golden gooses, before it goes with the way of Power Rangers
>>147109802Honestly, I think it's for the best. While they did have the big bucks to make sure the movies could have insane budgets, they were also demanding a lot of things and making sure the films were made to their specifications. Not having them be in charge might be the ticket to helping the films be able to experiment more now and not have to include/exclude characters based on Hasbro's whims
>>147108174>>147106890RiD2015 was apparently the last time the show was a hit with kids, and it made Bumblebee the star and had no proper Megatron.Hasbro is still very touchy due to the 86 movie, but I don't think modern kids are so attached to Optimus/Megatron like 80s kids were, maybe Optimus. They'd do well to learn from Ultraman and make the Optimus look more an archetype with new successors again (like the 90s Convoys in Japan) with the original existing to give his blessing and preside over Cybertron while a new Prime has the everyday adventures
>>147109393>>147109583The real answer is that Bulkhead is green with a very different body type, while Ironhide is red and a "big car" with a window chest, which makes him too similar to Optimus for marketing. G1 year 1/2 is full of very similar colors for characters because the line was cobbled from existing releases, these days they wouldn't design a core cast like that.
>>147109988So you mean like have Optimus' appearance be a template of sorts? I guess that could work to some degree, given Ultra Magnus was (at least his toy) meant to look like Optimus, just with armor. Though I'd be fine with Primes that have their own look, and just having Optimus be the former leader or off on his own adventures while the main focus is on whoever the new Prime character is. And we know multiple Primes can exist at once, so it's not like they have to have the Matrix in order to get Primed, they just have to either be created/blessed by Primus or given the rank by the Cybertronian council.
>>147109929>they were also demanding a lot of things and making sure the films were made to their specifications. They barely had any control and their demands were more like "Can you PLEASE put recognizable vehicle parts on the robots ad not have them all mute?" We almost got a movie where all the robots were black or grey and didn't speak in 2007Aaron archer will talk about it on his podcast now and then. Paramount got the license in the "anything goes" era of adaptations and Hasbro didn't have much pull or look into the process
>>147110119>And we know multiple Primes can exist at once,For me Optimus being the sole prime while we know that in the past multiple primes used to exist at once is one of the things that emphasize the decaying state of Cybertron
>>147110156Yea, but if we're talking having him not be the focus, another Prime or two doesn't seem like a bad idea. Considering he's almost always the example of excellence, it could be fun seeing a Prime who still has a ways to go as leader. We almost got that with Rodimus, but season 3 felt like it ignored his maturity from the climax of the movie. And Bumblebee was just "leader" in rank, but not really holding any kind of weighty title, and I'm sure there are loads of Bee fans who would have loved to see what kind of Prime he could have become.
>>147110154They had control of the budget, which was why the things were able to have such insane effects. And the original movie was made entirely because they wanted to have proper original toys and not just the reused Diaclone/Micro Man figures, and we all know how that turned out when they rolled out a movie that killed off 80% of the characters kids had been associating with for two years. The point is that them not supplying the budget hardly seems like the end of the world some people make it out to be.
>>147110119Really just how BWII-Car robots did it, you have a "convoy" that uses elements of G1 Optimus but can have their own alt-modes and quirks to their designs. You could deviate from the head as well and just keep buts like the crest and anenna but have them different(like Big Convoy's horned look, or Animated Optimus having it more like a cap). Then you could really go wild with the alt-modes, having rocket ship Otimus or APV Optimus, etc. I also might say go with Optimus ___ like Optimus Primal so the Prime name is more for matrix bearers>>147110156They weren't all Matrix bearers though, which I think confuses the lore a bit. the first ideas of a 12/13 original TFs didn't have them all as Primes, but since they made Vector Prime one they were sort of committed to the idea, even though alpha Trion is also one and doesn't have it in his name
>>147110284It's seems like these days Prime is both a rank and a kind of "race" I guess you could say, since most iterations have the Primes be the first children of Primus, sort of like the angels predating man. I feel like having it be both works fine, though it definitely has to be played just right since Cybertron being on the brink of total collapse is what makes up most plots in the series, and if Primus is just able to be called up and turn anybody into a Prime would kind of make things feel a bit cheap. Though I guess you could get around things by having Optimus or whoever is the holder of the Matrix be able to grant Prime status/body to someone who the Matrix resonates with. Which could allow for some occasional swapping of who gets to hold the Matrix, allowing for some displays of power when they prove their worth and use it to save the day.
>>147108520But I think it worked pretty well so far. He's always in the second way of decepticons and you always expect that shit it is going to get real after his appearence. If he was one of the group from the start I doubt he could sustain the same aura.
>>147110265>And the original movie was made entirely because they wanted to have proper original toys and not just the reused Diaclone/Micro Man figures,There's a big difference between the 86 movie, which was basically directly commissioned by Hasbro, and the 07 movie which was licensed out though. You're right in that Hasbro pulling out won't mean much though. Paramount will keep making movies if they think it's worthwhile(and they may, failures aside, it's one of the few franchises they have)
>>147109393Of course they absolutely could exist, they are not literealy the same characters, but they share the same archetype, which means if you build a small team you need to pick one and there is no need for a second one until the plot needs to. Same thing would work for Ratchet since there are other autobots medic/repair bots, but Ratchet sticked in his niche better that the rest of them.
>>147110366I'm not sure why people get tangled up in the nomenclature of Prime but not ConvoySure, it's partly Hasbro's fault for having the 13 and the lineage of the Matrix both be called PrimesBut I haven't seen the same autism over the name Convoy, even when there are multiple coexisting Convoys orbthr same guy changing his name
>>147110506I imagine a lot of that is because Convoy is the Japanese name, and even a lot of Japanese media seemed to start shifting towards using Prime as a name/rank/whatever.
>>147109802>fumbling every IPBarbie and Baldur's Gate 3 did fairly well didn't they?
>>147110506>>147110541Because the whole Convoy concept inJapan is fairly cleanly delineated, all the Beast Era convoys have energon Matrixes(Matrices?), while the 13 Primes has been sort of unorganized
>>147110587They don't own Barbie(that's mattel) and they're currently fumbling the BG3 success with no followup in sight and no longterm DLC planned.
>>147108174>It might be time to see something akin to Beast Wars, maybe even going a step further with new leaders. Bear with me. I don't think the problem is the characters. I don't think Optimus and Megatron being present is the problem. Less focus on them would be good, give other characters a chance to shine to breathe some fresh life into the franchise, but I think they need to reinvent Transformers entirely. And this is going to sound crazy, but...I think they need to make them more human, less vehicle. Now, I don't know how to do this entirely, but I think they need to make the designs less clunky, less old. Machinery nowadays and futuristic sci-fi exists beyond "block 1 goes ontop of block 2". We have paper thin metal now, we have metals that are bendable, and they are aliens, there's no reason for the designs to be as stocky and cartoony as they are. They need to be able to transform, but I think they need to do away with very visible car parts that make the designs look so... old-fashioned and goofy. You want the general public to be interested and the general public want something more humanoid before you can introduce the wilder aspects; look at how well the Sonic movie did. Also look at the positive response from female viewers of Nosferatu. Things can be alien and freaky, but there must be a human element, or else the general public can't get into it. And unfortunately, the general public have the money they need to keep the franchise alive, but I do believe we can achieve a happy medium with this.
>>147110672I mean, they have done a fair bit of making the Transformers act like people over the years, at least compared to G1 where they would act like people, but then also make a ton of "by the way, we're robots" jokes. As for the designs, I feel like they could be more varied, but it doesn't hurt having some of them be more blocky. If anything, it could be a way to help tell the generations of Transformers apart. Older ones, closer to the early days of Cybertron are more angular in their shape, while the newer ones are a bit like Bayverse/Prime with sleeker designs. Might even be able to work in bits of evolution, since that was kind of the name of the game with the Beast era, even if Beast Machines fumbled the ball in the eyes of many people. Of course, that might require Primus/Cybertron to be more active, or at least have some kind of excuse for the newer generations of Cybertronians being fancier than the older models.
>>147110672I was initially going to shit on this because this mentality is what gives us stuff like TLK Optimus where he has no real way of Transfoming in toy form without shellforming, or the Beast Machines designs, but I do get it. I think Transformers is sort of hurt having to stick so rigidly to design conceptions made 40 years ago and not modernizing in the same way Japanese mecha properties did. When they do try to modernize lately, it's not really handled by engineers and done just for CGI, so the way they transform doesn't work as naturally in figures. The frank answer is a lot of western tech designers aren't as appealing as Japanese ones, or care as much for how feasible the designs can work while maintaining fantasy grace and aesthetics . The Macross designs do an excellent job of working as fairly simple transformations, while looking very sleek and making them look more like mecha and not just re-cobbled jets. at the same time, I do think having recognizable bits is part and partial to the defining Transformers look. But like Macross, it could be done more gracefully and fresh instead of just adding greebles to g1 optimus
>>147110927Yea, they could try taking some gambles and letting Optimus not be a truck all the time, kind of like how Megs has been able to be tanks and helicopters, though I get you also mean changing looks further than just alt modes. And really, long as it's not too sleek like TLK Optimus where he was just a robot with no discernible alt mode features, that's fine with me
>>147110740> Older ones, closer to the early days of Cybertron are more angular in their shape, while the newer ones are a bit like Bayverse/Prime with sleeker designs.I love the way you think, anon. That is actually an excellent way to do 'show, don't tell' in a way that shouldn't be too hard to discern by just looking. Though, I don't really want them to follow the Bayformers formula either, those things are much too difficult to tell apart from one another with how busy they are.>>147110927>I think having recognizable bits is part and partial to the defining Transformers look.Yes, my bad, I don't think they should remove ALL the vehicle parts from the designs, just maybe as an example; instead of Bumblebee's chest being the entire body of a bug, have it more human shaped. Though, I think also maybe it's time to separate the toys from the media itself, to a degree. The transformation they do in the media should not need to be a direct 1/1 to the toys.
>>147110119I don't even think they have to follow a template. I mean, its like saying Picard must be like Kirk or Sisko should be like Picard. Transformers is a franchise with a large cast of characters, so why limit yourself to a few one?
>>147111033That's why I said something along the lines of Prime too. Sleek and cool, but not quite as overly technical as Bayverse (which were cool for the films, but obviously don't quite translate into less expensive animation or 2D quite as well) but still having that sense of "alien robot" that they were trying to communicate.
>>147111033>Though, I think also maybe it's time to separate the toys from the media itself, to a degree. The transformation they do in the media should not need to be a direct 1/1 to the toys. That's been the case for the last 15 years really, and I don't think that's a good thing. None of the Bayformers/Prime/Rid2015/ Earthspark designs were made with making 1:1 toys in mind like it was in the UT days. A good engineer, like Shoji Kawamori, can design sleek mecha that's feasible as a relatively simple transformation scheme achievable in a toy(Macross toys are generally pricy, but that's more due to the finish and build than being impossible to pull off the transformation on a lower budget)I also think having that limitation/consideration helps prevent truly bullshit designs like TLK Optimus which are more random concept art than a good design for a transforming robot
>>147111110That's why I asked, from the post and the use of Ultraman, I thought maybe the implied idea was something like having Optimus-like characters. Which isn't entirely unheard of, given Optimus Primal was heavily based on G1 Optimus in his robot form (and using the name back before Primes became the big title). Like I said, with Ultra Magnus, we technically had another Optimus, even if that was only more clear in his toy than it was the show.Which does make me think if any future works play more into Optimus and Megatron being brothers, could be fun seeing them share some physical traits, though I guess that would have to be a case of them being spark brothers or whatever as opposed to just brotherly pals.
>Tfw no autobot mommy leader....
>>147111123>>147111125Right, now we just need to get Hasbro to listen...
>>147111517I mean, it sounds like they aren't taking all their balls away and going home, they just aren't lending out the premium ball of near unlimited money. Though yea, whether they'd be on board with the ideas and turn them into toys that would be anybody's guess
>>147111241Elita though
>>147110029you know Transformers are malleable, he doesn't need to stick to that design per say. could always go Bayverse colours.
Other than OP and Megatron, are there any characters you DON'T want to see returning to Transformers ever again? Personally, I'm kinda sick of Bumblebee though I don't want him to be written out, I just don't think he's ever gonna be as popular as they want him to be. As for entirely written out, I've never liked Bulkhead.
>>147113214>I just don't think he's ever gonna be as popular as they want him to beHe already is, Bumblebee is arguably the second most popular Transformer after Optimus.
Imagine if Skybound Transformers got the animated treatment like InvincibleSeth Rogen has to be their Cliffjumper
>>147113329I have my issues with Invincible on Prime (Animation specifically) but I can't lie and say I'd love to watch that. Especially with Kirkman onboard. Skybound just rocks, having to clue in on a GI Joe run I don't give a shit about not withstanding.
>>147102951If they can turn Skywarp into a girl and it works then yeah they could probably make girl Ratchet work. Just depends on the quality of the writing.
>>147113214whatever idiot that has been appearing constantly during the 80's. I wanna see how a show with the entire toy cast of Generation 2 would go,
>>147113827Well the newer half of G2, the first two years and(maybe more than) half of the G2 line are all 84/85 characters.Irony is despite the name, G2 was more an attempt to bring the franchise back to G1 year 1/2. Realistic vehicles, familiar characters, no headmasters/targetmasters/pretenders/action masters

>>147108452I think Prime handled Shockwave in one of the best ways in this regard. He's absent for most of the show only appearing in a single episode, keeping his wow factor, until the shows 3rd season where he becomes one of the Con's heavy weights for the rest of the show. It made his reappearance and addition to the series an actual "oh shit" moment.
By the BIGGEST twist reveal in children's media next to ikra being Aku.
>>147105747He had a girlfriend back home, remember.
>>147114807Heh, I had those four McDonald's toys way back. Think they're still lying around somewhere. Not the best TF toys around obviously, but they were neat.
>>147114927I'm not sure if "Mandala effect" is the right term for this, but it's not really the case. The only thing established in that episode was that Powerglide and Moonracer knew each other, there wasn't anything romantic established unlike Optimus/Elita and Ironhide/Chromia where it's a bit more blatant.
Is the 80s series and movie worth watching if I liked bumbleebee and tf:one?
>>147115132It's absolutely a kids toy commercial from the 80s but its one of the better of its era. The voice actors are all having a ball, you get the basic concepts and dynamics in the franchise still in use after all this time, crazy shit just happens and the chaos is fun to see ensue.Movie's a glorified rock opera but it looks great. It's all on YouTube and free, no reason not to if you're interested.
>>147115132lol I’m watching in the reverse. I started with G1 and now about about to watch TFOne and TFPrime. I definitely recommend the movie at least, there’s a good HD restoration that got posted to youtube on Christmas. Season 3 has a good number of awesome episodes but overall it’s really really pulpy, which I really like but I understand might not be for everyone.>>147114414UGLY ASS DISGUISES
>>147115550Watched first ep, 80s shows were very dumb. Also crazy how everyone had the ability to fly, kinda silly how the seekers still turn into jets anyway. And it was funny seeing Starscream being the dumb bitch of the group as soon as he's introduced.
>>147115132It's fun, but very clunky. First season was fairly cohesive, but the second felt like a hodgepodge of good ideas, bad ideas, retarded ideas, and some occasional fantastical ideas. Animation is all over the place, with some episodes being about as good as you would expect of a mid-80s cartoon, but then you get some truly jarring errors that it's hard to believe they weren't caught in time. The movie is a blast, but will devastate you if you became connected to most of the G1 cast. But the animation and music are some of the best in the entire franchise. Some errors are present, but nothing quite as janky as the cartoon. The third and final season (season 4 is literally just three eps, can hardly be called a season) has a lot of the same issues as season 2, but also suffers from questionable shifts in key characters (namely the leaders feeling like neither want to have skin in the game) and sadly most of the original cast get shafted to just being there in the background while the new characters from the movie get all the spotlight. It's by no means terrible, but it's easily the wartiest member of the TF media family. This is where a massive amount of concepts and lore would be introduced to varying degrees of success, and then see refinement as later anime, cartoons, movies, comics, and even some games would help expand the franchise.
>>147115882>Season 3 has a good number of awesome episodes but overall it’s really really pulpy, which I really like but I understand might not be for everyone.I also prefer Season 3, I never got the disdain for it. I get pair bonding with the Season 1/2 cast over a year back in the 80's, but binging it I was burnt out by the Season 2 format towards the end. Season 3 feels like it has some actual direction even if it's not as refined as later shows would be.
>>147116592Do you have a favourite episode from S3? I really liked the one with the Transorganics. I thought it was awesome the way they were set up, almost like Cybertron’s equivalent of Durin’s Bane. It was also really nice to see Arcee get so much screen time and some cool scenes.
how would you write the five dinobots to give them distinct personalities?
>>147114629Aye…
Post sexy sentinel
>>147117311
>>147117039Don't they already largely have distinct personalities? Grimlock is the leader and either an asshole with some good qualities (Marvel) or Captain Caveman (Sunbow). Slag is a psycho, Sludge is dumb, Swoop is the friendly one and Snarl is just kind of there.
>>147116592I liked that Season 3 tried to go beyond the standard Autobot vs Decepticon stock plots. Also liked that they were trying to do some genuine sci fi stuff. Heck the Quintesson Journal would probably be a decent Star Trek episode if you replaced the Quints with the Ferengi and the Autobots with Starfleet.
>>147116893Webworld. It's just a legitimate amusing piece of satire. And I love crazy ass Galvatron.

>>147117737I want to go to one someday, but living in the middle of the country makes it near impossible with my budget.
>>147117737I had fun last year
>>147100384this guy fucks. but when it gets down to it, I prefer the AUTObots to be mostly cars. and the Decepticons to be military vehicles and war machines, it really emphasizes the differences between the union of Autobots joining forces to fight the evil empire. Yes, I know Hound was a military jeep. Im just saying the more air and weapon superiority to the Deceps is cool to me and it understates how tough the Autobots have to be to overcome them.
>>147116240it's got the most guts and mots of all transformer cartoons. its also silly and all over the place. thats its charm. but you have to watch it with a child brain, there werent a lot of mature themes until the movie, and even then its just rock n roll violence and coming of age shit. later episodes get better and its really about the characters and finding which one you like. you should only be watching it to see some cool robots do crazy shit.
>>147118683I agree overall, it just makes me cherish the few exceptions to the rule we get like this fella a bit more.
>>147119015I also like Jetfire so it's not a clean cut thing. A rare flying plane or chopper for the Autobots is cool. Especially if it's a rescue vehicle and less of a combat vehicle. It showcases that they are 'the people' and the Deceps are 'them.' One thing that I always liked about early G1 was that Megatron had air superiority in the form of Starscream and his gang. They moved fast in the air and had more weapons, they constantly shot up the cars in any chase. Starscream's guys were a tipping point in favor of the Decepticons. They were HIS guys, not Megatron's, so he put up with SS to have jets on his team. That's my headcanon and it works for me. SS usually challenged and tried to usurp Megatron several times, but his air force was a necessary evil so he tolerated him for that, in my mind.
>>147098788And hopefully would be voiced by Keith David one day.

Just finished all the relevant IDW comics before MTME and these are my final thoughts:Managed to get me to care about characters that were relatively new to me, like the Wreckers, Perceptor in particular, Blurr, Drift, Overlord, and more, which was nice. It's very apparent that the comics were planned from pre-2005/early 2005 because the amount of jacking off America got was so ridiculous. Reading it as a non-American in 2025 had me rolling my eyes so many times whenever Earth politics got involved. I'd rather they'd have stuck with the teenagers than try to sell me propaganda, but I understand that's just how it was gonna be so shortly after 9/11. The way they try to hamfist the MUH AMERICAN FREEDUM hurt the story, and it was only around the end of this whole spiel that they managed to reign it in. The Heart of Darkness/Dead Universe plot was very retarded, but I suppose it paid off in the end for the soft reset. The way the Earth plot was so quickly discarded and how the Decepticons mostly teleported back to Cybertron was kinda funny, very dumb, but funny. Very funny how nobody really reacted to Optimus coming back from the dead AGAIN. I feel bad for the guy, it's time for him to take a break. All in all, I'd give it a 6 or 7 out of 10 overall. It had some really cool moments and some absolutely retarded ones, but I am pretty excited for the MTME and RID comics and I'm probably gonna be the right target audience for it anyway.

How do you guys cope with the transformers movie for for the foreseeable future being a live action GI Joe crossover?
>>147139955Dana would pretty much be great as Starscream, like a Steve Buscemi-inspired onePeople would simp Dana as Screamer moreso than Nordic Bunny
>>147143819A) The live-action Transformers movies were practically GI Joe crossovers to start withB) TF/Joe is a classic and long-returning team upIt being Joe isn't a bad thing. It being made with the Bayverse/ROTB quality of writing is the worry.

>>147143819I don't believe in any relatively successful TF movie.

>>147139998Yay! It's coming out tomorrow! (Or in two days!)
Has transformers ever have a crossover with power rangers?
>>147145498Hasbro have made a Megazord I think, but other than that, no real crossover as far as I'm aware
>>147145546Actually to add to thatTransformers have an actual Sentai team which are awesome

Okay, hear me out...A combiners of all the weird gimmicks of G1, with Pretenders, Headmasters, Powermasters, Action Masters...
I can't believe this thread is still up.
>>147139643- originally a colonist that was supposed to make ancient Earth a Cybertronian colony, but the ship she was on crashed into the ocean.- some of the colonists survived, escape the crash site, and got up to mischief when humans started becoming a thing. many inspired human myths, Thunderblast being the (twisted and misremembered) origin of the idea of sirens.- later captured and imprisoned by a good survivor, then escaped in modern times and scanned a speedboat- her cgi model has tits and NIPPLES under her chest armor, most porn is accurate to canon. would sometimes flash underboob from time to time as she moved around, and showed her nipples on screen for a split second during one especially exaggerated movement. most people missed it at first because she was in the background. also, the tits bounced during one running scene.- bitchy and shallow, tries to moves up in status by always endearing herself to whoever is strongest at the time. it doesn't always work out.- multi-missile launcher is powered up by cyber key to reveal a singlar, MASSIVE missile launcher inside. leaders know she's a disloyal suck up, but she's got the offensive power to be useful- genuine friends with a stoner bike transformer that she knows from the myth days- ironically becomes the leader of the Decepticons at the end of series, simply by the fact that the only other Decepticons are Crumplezone, Ransack (who are idiots), and Thundercracker (who they kidnapped). They try to strike out on their own and immediately crash their ship on Mars.
>>147143819Genuinely can't stand GI Joe. I already hate American patriotism, I don't want more of it.

>>147146647Much to talk about with cool giant robots
>>147146647god bless.
>>147129514I don't care for any beyond Bruticus and Superion. I think the majority of them could stand to have more distinct and unique forms. it's criminal that predaking is just another interchangeable big dude instead of some massive beast
Thinking about it now, its kinda weird how the dinobots don't really care for wheeljack despite him making them, not even an acknowledgment of their creators death. Any other transformers series would have that as some kind of scene or plot point. and yeah i know hasbro and the writers didn't really think that much about the characters back then since they just viewed them as product to be rid of.
>>147150560I saw a fancomic about it where the Dinobots hesitate when they see Wheeljack's corpse, it would be neat seeing it explored in some way.But yeah, it wasn't really done cause the character deaths in the movie were all mostly meant to just be fodder.
>>147143819The concept has been rightfully derided for being dumb and all that but I honestly just don't see how this is anything but a net benefit for Transformers in live-action, maybe animation. The parts nobody gives a shit about are human stuff anyways, barring a few standouts they're usually not that interesting to most people in Transformers anyways. If you can spice it up a little on that end I don't see a huge problem.
>>147121539I always thought Armada Starscream kinda came off like a weird Decepticon to the Hot Rod types.
>>147145546It would be cool for the autobots and rangers to work together
>>147146065People would even simp for thatFunny enough there is one person who'd nail Whirl well and it's pretty outlier for one.
Pretenders!
>>147132028TFP and TFOne because these where the first i saw and they feel really well made on their own :]
>>147150560Prime's death was already painful enough, don't traumatize kids even further. Dinobits known for their low INT stats so not giving a fuck about death kinda fitting.
>>147153238Have pretenders ever been seen in the original series. Or were they only ever a product outside of the show?
>>147152646And who'd be that be?
>>147153911Gary Anthony Williams
Would the sequel be called Transformers TWO or Transformers ONE 2
>>147153802They were in japanese Masterforce series. Kinda cool idea but I guess it wasn't very smart decision to give an outer shell for an already transformable toy.
>>147154012Transformers Tuah
>>147154012We'll never know I guess since it bombed at the box office.
>>147154012Transformers One Shall StandAnd the sequel to that would be Transformers One Shall Fall

>>147154970Honestly, the vehicle and ultra pretenders are stupid. Mega pretenders are fine, the shells can be imagined as similar to head/power/targetmasters, as in human like entities that transform into mechanical stuff.
>>147147195I'm surprised the current Scourge figure hasn't been retooled to be a new Thunderblast
>>147153802they were in the marvel comics the actual original series

>>147158889I think he's been fine so far, how the execution of his character is gonna turn out mostly depends on how long DWJ plans to drag out his PTSD shenanigans until he finally gets some confidence back
>>147132028Animated. Probably just nostalgia bias but the art style and animation (first season at least) are just so good. NTM Corey Burton nailing all of his roles. Also best megatron in general.
>>147160648>best megatronExcept for the fact that he didn't question why Starscream kept coming back after killing him over and over. That was kinda dumb of him.
>>147160943I mean, part of him probably thought it was weird, but would you really care if someone you enjoy thrashing keeps coming back for seconds, thirds, and fourths? Megs was probably having a blast

>>147096465It's funny how Mirage has been turned into a pseudo-Hot Rod in his latest incarnations. Hasbro likes the archetype and the attitude but they're afraid of backlash.Speaking of Hot Rod, it's still funny that even in the Transformers One poster OP posted, Hot Rod's the only transformer who's ever used the finger holes in the Matrix.
>>147156712So Hot Rodimus? Jokes asides, I like the headcanon that Hot Rod is his nickname, with Rodimus being his full name.
>>147156538What's wrong with just Hot Rod?
>>147163815hard to trademark as a character name since it's a generic term
>>147163149so Hot Rod is doomed to have Scrappy doo status forever
>>147163883And Bumblebee isn't?
>>147164260no, he's also been difficult. they just work at it more because he's more of a mascot that hod rod
is the TF fandom the oldest fandom with recorded internet activity?
>>147164467No, probably trekkies
>>147164119no. Cyberverse had him as a main character and people liked him in the show as did the writers.
Kind of hope they drop the mute Bee thing for a while. As amusing as it was, he's already regained his voice twice in the films (2007 and Last Knight) and once in the cartoons (Prime), so it would be nice to put that shtick to rest if only for a while. I know not many people were big on him being a chatterbox in One, but it's not like they have to go with one extreme or the other (mute or chatterbox)
>>147164740Now that the entire shtick is gone, as Hasbro's contract to make TF movies, is just a matter of when.
>>147145588Maybe TJ will finally be right in guessing he'll be the next HasLab
something I find impossible to take seriously in G1 is how Megatron's fusion cannon sound effect looks like something you would hear when a character gets hit by a pie at their face
>>147164681I need to catch up to Cyberverse, I watched the first 5 episodes and got bored to death so I binge weatched BW to take the bad taste out of my mouth. Apparently the second and third seasons are vastly better
>>147164984I'm kinda the opposite, I've heard that sound so much as Megatron's fusion cannon that it feels weird hearing in other cartoons now
>>147161448Voiced by Frank Welker too
Think it's possible to buy an Agent Knight KITT and repaint him into the Duke's of Hazzard's General Lee?
>>147164467There are Star Trek fans and Dr. Who fans, which also has usenet records I think
>>147164778Well it's about the only left in Victory you could sell 18,000 units of reliably
>>147165037Later season does gets better and funnier too.
>>147096465I miss video games.
>>147165037I wanna see it for the fembots, probably my favorite Chromia design
>>147166899There’s still video games. I played one earlier.
>>147164681
>>147164467>>147165791There's fan speculation for Star Wars on usenet before ROTJ came out. Comics also likely had online discussion back then too.TF has some mentions online in the 80's, but doesn't really start a tangible online fanbase until around 91-93, and the first usenet TF group(before then discussion was relegated to general cartoon or comic groups)
>>147163149There were many others similar characters, like Hotshot or Sideburns, or even Cheetor from beastwars. The archetype of that kind of characters is really fun and makes the group of main characters more interesting.
