Self-inserting sometimes factors but it also can just be simply someone likes the characters and thinks they'd go good together, for example Hank Pym and Rita Demara haven't had much interaction especially since she died in The Crossing but I'd think it'd be a fun pair based on personality meshing, them both being size changers with Rita having stolen Hank's Yellowjacket costume and modified it plus the funny factor of Rita going after another person who had romantic interest with Janet after she fancied Black Knight.
