A Night Off

I liked everything accept the last 5 minutes.

Glad to see more training scenes. So far, I haven't bought the whole: "we're so much stronger than we were before" spiel they've been going on. I'm glad to see actually training, especially training were we actually see them learn and experiment with new things, like Ruby splitting apart. And make visual improvements, like Jaune being able to keep up with Nora. I wish they would also show them making improvements in real battles, and be true to the whole, "1 day out there is worth 7 in here". But oh well.

Lot of cute character interactions, I don't like bmblbee, but the dancing scene was cute. I particularly like Weiss immediately hanging out with Jaune and Oscar. Her relationship with Jaune hasn't gotten that much attention, nor do I think it should, but little details like this can flesh it out without making it a main focus. It's nice to know she's not religiously against hanging out with him like she use to be. Now that I'm think about it, this moment kinda show how far both have come personality wise, Weiss can be friends with Jaune without vomiting, and Jaune can be friends with Weiss without trying to fuck her. Also Oscar and Jaune seem to be on good terms now. Again, it doesn't need focus, background details are enough.

Also, Ren and Nora finally kiss. I don't like it. I know in the last thread I complained about there relationship not being fleshed out, but this wasn't built up to at all. It's so forgettable, I literally forgot it happened. Hence why I made my complaint last thread. Ren NEEDS a personality outside of being stoic. So when Nora chips away at his stoic exterior, there's actually something she getting to underneath. Right now it feels like she chipped away at his stoicism, only find more stoicism.

2/2: Plot and politics

Me and my best friend <3, were discussing in the last thread about how this show HEAVILY reflects the time in which it was written, and how, in line with other media at the time (2019) it started to become more overtly political. But politics have changed, ALOT.

This episode was released in 2019, after the 2016 election and it's claims of Russian hacking and interference. The writers wrote a story about a billionaire running for office, against a "strong" women (of color), who wins by hacking the election, under the guise of "last minute voter turn out". This episode was written before 2020, were Trump denied the election results, due to delayed results. If this was written after 2020, I think it would be written VERY differently lol.

I find Marrows veiw on the law interesting. It gives insight as to why he works for the system he supposedly finds oppressive. He firmly believes in the rule of law. It's the only real interesting thing about his character.

This show is SUPER inconsistent with the whole faunus night vision thing. Why aren't Marrow and sheep girl not doing more to stop Tyrian? Why establish faunus have night vision if you never do anything with it?

P.s it's nice to FINALLY get a song in this show that isn't rock. Lord know this soundtrack needs more diversity.

Sheep girl is SO FUCKING CUTE. My god, her design is main character worthy, not just a background character for 2 volumes.

I pretty much agree all around, so much so I barely have anything to add. I guess to start with, my feeling on Nora and Ren is more like "well, finally it happened" lol. I was never super invested in their relationship, as it was obvious all the way back in volume 1 that they were going to end up together eventually ("well, not together together"). I actually sometimes had to remind myself that they weren't dating already. Like all things in the show, it could have been executed better, but at least it's finally cannon now.

On bmblbee, I'm actually surprised they're laying the groundwork for a relationship between them. I know they end up together in the end, but the way people talked about made it seem like it was more sudden and out of character. That they're setting things up 2 volumes in advance caught me off guard. There were tiny hints the last couple episodes that I noticed of course, but this was the most blatant. (just spoilering it in case some random is following along these threads (even though the spoiler has been mentioned a few times in past threads (including by me))).

(2/2) On the politics of it all, it is pretty funny. The surprise loss of Hilary, uhh I mean Robyn, despite her leading in the polls. Jacque's win thanks to the help of some shadowy foreign villains. Like OP (my bestie) mentions, in hindsight it all becomes pretty funny when the election conspiracies would jump from Russiagate to "fake" ballots and electorate schemes. I like that the show is at least trying to engage with the politics of the current times, but it kind of clashes with Tyrian and Watts. Those two are stereotypical villains who work for a Dark Witch who wants to destroy humanity. You get the sense that the writers are trying hard to connect the two plots, but it doesn't really make sense so far, and I agree with OP that the ending for this episode even felt contrived. But maybe the next few episode will turn things around.

I will say, I've enjoyed these last two episodes more than the rest of the volume.

>Those two are stereotypical villains who work for a Dark Witch who wants to destroy humanity.

Yeah, that's the problem with save the world plots. It kills motivation for the heroes. And makes any motivation for the villains stupid.

> Why do you want to save the world?

Because I live here.

>why do you want to destroy the world.

Because my sister died, and that's evil, so I'll kill everyone's sisters.

Smaller stakes are almost always better.

>Smaller stakes are almost always better.
Now that you mention it, I'd probably enjoy this politics plotline more if the writers just didn't include Tyrian and Watts at all, even if it meant delaying the Salem plot again.
