You probably will die. The difference is the repercussions from the fall will be instantaneous so it's easier for us to wrap our head around the cause/effect. Booze, cigarettes, drugs, bad diet, etc, work a lot slower so sometimes people die from something else before they work their magic, sometimes people change their habits and their bodies can heal before it's too late, and for the rest, they tend to only experience conclusive proof that those choices were bad right before the end.

You may not die from emphysema or lung cancer, but even light cigarette smoking can contribute to a host of other health problems. The digestive system can deal with occasional sugar and fatty foods, but other than coughing shit up, the lungs don't really have a mechanism in place to deal with anything other than fresh air.
