Would it be wrong to recommend someone who is interesting in reading Amazing Spider-Man just start at the beginning? For me, despite them being old, I still think they're great comics and I would recommend someone read 1-300 and then choose when to stop after that, because I really believe those 300 issues are just solid great comics. Like, O'Neil's run is in there, and at worst that's just meh and kinda boring. Would that be throwing too much at someone?

If this person is very open-minded and not super jaded or used to something much quicker, like manga, it might be okay.
>>
No that's how most people recommend it. Plus it starts with the best stuff. If people get bored after Lee or Conway's run it's not like they have to keep going. I usually tell people to read until it gets bad and don't specify when that is.
>>
>>147151261
It wouldn't be wrong at all.
The only point to worry about is whether the person in question is happy reading Silver Age Marvel, or if they're a complete pleb who's scared of thought bubbles and overly exuberant captions.

>and don't specify when that is.
I can. It's when Carnage shows up.
>>
>>147151400
>used to something much quicker, like manga
Manga has also suffered from decompression. So I would never call manga "quicker".

>if they're a complete pleb who's scared of thought bubbles and overly exuberant captions.
Do people really not like those things?

Who cares about what you think? You can't pay attention to something for more than 12 seconds.

You can read a 220-page volume of an average shounen manga in the time it takes to read about two of these Silver-Age issues. It's absolutely quicker.

Stop.
>>
>>147151579
Including the cover and splash page at the beginning. Amazing Spider-Man #1 and #2 are combined 50 pages. I'm genuinely curious how you can say that's not as quick to read as something more than 4 times the page count.
>>
>>147151599
It's about 5-10 chapters worth of story versus just 2 in about the same time.
>>
>>147151646
I'm curious how you read 50 pages at the same pace as 220
>>
>>147151693
Because manga is quicker.
>>
>>147151707
I ask again. HOW is it quicker?
>>
>>147151693
not all,but a lot of the manga that ends up being popular is meant to be basically scanned quickly with your eyes.
>>
>>147151723
Less words, bigger, flowing art, basic concepts.
>>
>>147151725
Some modern comics have taken this approach
>>147151740
So less work than a silver age comic.

>ould it be wrong to recommend someone who is interesting in reading Amazing Spider-Man just start at the beginning?
Where the fuck else would you start?
>>
>>147151853
>Where the fuck else would you start?
Some jumping on points. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to recommend someone silver age stuff.
>>
>>147151815
Less work for the reader, yes.
>>
>>147151693
I think people oversell how decompressed manga is, it's not all garbage like Bleach and One Piece, most of it is comparable to modern comics I'd say.
Anyway it isn't inherently better or worse for a comic to be more compressed or wordy, it's just a different kind of thing. If what is written is worth reading then it's all good, and Stan gives Peter a likable voice so it doesn't get tiresome (like a lot of his stuff)
>>
>>147151504
>Do people really not like those things?
You'd be surprised at how many comic book readers completely write off anything Bronze Age or older on the grounds that it's "too wordy," or "too silly," or "too dated," or even just because they can't stand pre-digital art.
>>
>>147152043
To be fair, it's not very good most of the time.
>>
>>147152122
Go away
>>
>>147151261
I don't think so at all. The vast majority of those stories still hold up and it provides a good foundation for the character
>>
>>147152269
What's wrong with you?
>>
>>147152313
>Durrr old comics are bad
Nothing wrong with me. You're just retarded.
>>
>>147151883
I always recommend it. Either start at the start, or start where-ever and quit bitching about not knowing everything.
Continuity isn't hard, you're just lazy
>>
>>147152370
Most comics at any given time are bad. How is this retarded?
>>
>>147152450
Bait used to be believable.
>>
>>147151261
I've been reading comics for a long time, and I just started Ditko Spider-Man recently. It's not well-written, but Ditko's art carries it.
>>
>>147151261
ive been doing that and i like it so far
