I firmly believe we need more animated adaptations of comics to build a thriving ecosystem, similar to what Japan does. Creating animated shows that adapt comics and dividing them into seasons is what the industry requires. With each new season, publishers can attract new readers, as some fans of the show will naturally turn to the comics to discover what happens next. While originals are cool, adapting existing comics from publishers like Image, IDW, Dark Horse, and Boom can allow both mediums to flourish. Maybe mini-series and graphic novels can be turned it animated movies.
>>147156984I agree but cartoon adapters are retarded and refuse to do faithful adaptations despite it being successful every time it's done
>>147156984I would agree if we had more prevalent genres in comics besides capeshit.
>>147157027Sadly, fpbp>>147156984Us animation will never be as good as Japan
>>147156984People are only interested in writing comics in hopes of it getting picked up as a movie or tv shows. Animation is still disrespected, even by writers that are locked in the industry.
>>147156984There's not enough comics like invincible. Long running. One author. Self contained story with a beginning and end.
>>147156984The Invincible adaptation feels off.
>>147156984You are right, but you are missing a couple of key elements. What western animation needs isn't to adapt comics to cartoons *specifically*, it needs a strong indie pipeline in general. In your proposal, all it would mean for the most part is that Marvel and DC get even more cartoons, which wouldn't solve the problem. Marvel/DC already get adaptations all the time, and they basically never are successful as advertising for the comics because the adaptations and the comics have little in common save for the names of some of the characters. Which isn't really the adaptation's fault, because how can you make an adaptation of The Flash that is faithful to the character when even the COMICS THEMSELVES often don't do that? Canon and personality and powerset changing from writer to writer over time? Which one the adaptation should treat as the true canon will always be a matter of personal preference and what we usually get is a mix of reheated greatest hits.Japan's pipeline works because its not specifically manga to anime, catering to the existing megaliths. Its a pipeline for indie creators to make sales, get noticed, and get picked up for adaptation with minimal interference from the publishers that print their work. Anime doesn't just get made out of Manga, it gets made out of light novels and webcomics and visual novels and more. As long as it is a self contained work that gets popular enough to get noticed, it can conceivably get an anime adaptation in Japan is someone is willing to invest in it. America's system is very much top down "I, big executive, have decided what people will want in advance and I will instruct the company I own to make it. Oh no, I was wrong, how could this happen to me?". Japans system is bottom-up, seeding a thousand ideas and rewarding the ones that thrive on their own. Which can be pandering schlock, but is always pander shlock that has proven that people want it.
>>147156984yup there should be a faithful animated adaptation of the walking dead
>>147156984Animated shows do seem like they'd hit closer to an audience that might actually read comics. Your average Avengers audience, while bigger, doesn't go home wanting to read comics. Especially when the movies leave little on the table for comics. To your point about Anime, yes, western equivalents of Harry Potter and Game of Thrones let the True Fans hit the books and get ahead. Or at least be the one at the water-cooler to go "well in the source,...."For Marvel/DC, I think there's anxiety about not just starting over on story, but potentially finding a comic run features practically an entirely different character. I think those franchises would be helped if a TV/comic run lined up more explicitly, sharing a subtitle or stating in an end card that side character 3's adventures would continue in WhoCares Issue 1.Do you think games might be a substitute? Not Marvel Rivals - see my comments about Avengers audiences. While I can walk away from a Guardians movie going "that story ended," spending the time with them in the game left me wanting more. Maybe goes to a series vs movie thing and training people to want these characters indefinitely. Like, if Marvel took a handful of heros, and gave them all indie-in-scope games as primers to who they are, their villains, light feel of story or maybe cover a previous arc, and build attachment by playing as them - personally, that could get my invested
>>147156984>I firmly believe we need more animated adaptations of comics to build a thriving ecosystem, similar to what Japan does. You're years too late to suggest this when we've been doing this for nigh unto 50 years.
The Japanese system is horrible. In the case of Invincible working, it's because Kirkman owns Invincible and you can see that Amazon is trying to change Invincible to take the IP off Kirkman's hands, just like AMC did. That's why Mignola took Hellboy movie is because he doesn't want to lose his IP.
Maybe, but not Kirkmanslop.Wake me up when there's a good animated adaptation of Grendel that has atmosphere similar to something like HBO Spawn.
>>147157636>The Japanese system is horribleElaborate
>>147156984No thanks if you're going to adapt them the same way Amazon adapted Invincible.
>>147157630I particularly suggested publishers that are not Marvel and DC. And yes, I am aware of the fact that anime which are adaptations, uses source materials ranging from manga to visual novels. However, majority of the popular anime are adaptations of manga running in popular magazines like weekly shonen jump, week shonen magazine, sunday, and occasionally some shoujo or seinen magazines.
>>147157738I mean it got the comic a lot of attention so I its not objectively bad.
>>147157778>attracted a lot of attention to garbage>made retards think it was anything but trashNah, it's objectively shit in every way
You need comics to be worth buying and easy to find before this happens.
>>147157917They are out there, just need to find them.Like The Darkness, and Witchblade. A gritty show for both would've been great. Hell, The Darkness had two successful games.
>>147158253There's the issue though, you need to let people know where that is unambiguously. And it can't be overpriced. Like seriously just put your shit online for free or a really low price. Everyone ignores how Manga is doing great despite literally every relevant Manga being 100% free....technically so are comics but that's not as widely advertised by the fanbase. Also Witchblade had a tv show in the 90s and an anime.
>>147158323Well shit, I had no idea for the latter. As for the former you're right. If the barrier to entry was lowered, then it would encourage more to take it. Like at the local comic shop in town. They'll take a brown bag, assign a genre to it, and fill it with ten random comics, some indie, some not, and sell it as a mystery bundle for ten dollars. Might not always like what they have, but it gets me curious. Low entry, that's the appeal
>>147156984Adaptations are cancer.
>>147158928Adaptations are the surest sign of success.
>>147156984Nah, they are usually mid at best and don't really satisfy the comic audience. Video games might be a better choice because they already have a wide audience.
The most faithful adaption is the Maltese Falcon and that’s because the text of the book was mistaken for the script. And even that changed some minor details.
I just want to see this animated...>But that's fanartAnd?
>>147157627I did like some of the alterations the live action show made to the comic, but it lost its footing very fast. If you are doing an alternative take, you need to stick to it or lose the audience.
>>147156984I'm honestly surprised that White Wolf doesn't make many comics and cartoons for their table top games. The games are fun, the few comics out there are generally fun, and the choose your own adventure books are damn fun. I feel they could actually dominate the comic world.
