Anyone else prefer Zenith to Morrison's early DC work?
>>147158122Idk why but it's one of those comics were you reread it the second time after "understanding" everything and it just doesn't hit the same for the first 2 parts so i just skip to the last w , the multiverse arc was pretty cool though and i still enjoy re-reading it it's my favorite, the last one with the cosmic egg thing was just really freaky and i liked it for that.
>>147158218Yeah, 3 and 4 are the best parts.
>>147158122I don't like Morrison.
>>147158122No, it just feels like a very, very rough draft of everything else he's ever written. Also, the printed copies I got were not good quality, especially the 3rd and 4th trades.I think Doom Patrol is a lot more interesting and fun, and I think Mozzer's JLA is a better version of the story they're trying to tell here. I do think it's interesting that they've been working on variations of the same idea or ideas pretty much the whole time they've been writing and it's interesting from a historical perspective to see the early seeds of that stuff, but having read it once I'll probably never read it again.
Zenith is fantastic, albeit a bit derivative of what was being written at the time, especially Moore's stuff.Animal Man is his best early work, start to finish. Gets a bit wacky in the end, but the playoff is neat.Doom Patrol has great highs (the brotherhood of Dada), but the run is a bit of a mess and I really hate the plot twist.
>>147158122Not really. His early DC work is still among my favorites but Zenith just didn't click with me.
>>147159049>a very, very rough draft of everything else he's ever writtenZenith ran concurrent with Animal Man and Doom Patrol for a little bit, and Phase 4 of Zenith came out after his Animal Man had ended and after 3/4ths of his Doom Patrol had been published. That being said, I think Phase 4 of Zenith is better than anything in Animal Man, Doom Patrol, and JLA. Phase 3 is also up there.I think I value Morrison's more British exuberance and Steve Yeowell's terrific, atmospheric inks over the less satisfying art of his early DC work (aside from his Batman).>>147159230Yeah, Zenith is a very noticeable remix of Moore's 80s comics, from Captain Britain to Miracleman to Watchmen, with some Luther Arkwright and Paradax thrown in for good measure.>>147159242Neither is my favorite, but I find his early DC to be overrated.
>>147158122yeah, probably
>>147158122Literally who?
He's all but admitted that this is a Paradax ripoff at this point right?
>>147160626Ah, well.>>147161223Zenith by Grant Morrison, a superhero comic published by 2000 AD. >>147161306Zenith himself is a Paradax rip-off, visually and conceptually, though their powers and all are different. Brendan McCarthy even drew the concept art. I think both are based on Morrissey. The stories are a mashup of Lovecraft and Alan Moore comics.
I seriously cannot take british "social commentary" seriously, the fantasy concepts are great, and the story is splendid, with the finale being one of the best payoffs I've seen... But anglos are just too concerned with their own view of history and morality for a normal person to relate to without feeling a bit, well, disgusted with the hypocrisy.
>>147162306Hypocrisy was the worst part about the Neil Gayman debacle.
>>147158122I read it when that one guy story timed all of Morrison's work. I wasn't feeling it.
>>147161639>MorrisseyZenith is Rick Astley.
>>147158122Yes
>>147162306I’m reading the autobiography of Pat Mills (co-creator of Judge Dredd) right now and it’s absolutely awash with this. Why are these fuckers so obsessed TO THIS DAY with Thatcher, and why are they so relentlessly determined to undercut the immersion in everything they write with “clever” nonsense? It reeks of insecurity.
>>147162306a normal person being an American?complaining about a British comic that was published in a British magazine by a British publisher for a British audience for being too British. is an odd complaint
>>147162306What hypocrisy?>>147163458What "clever" nonsense?
>>147162306Now you understand how the rest of the world feels about characters like Superman and Captain America.
>>147163458>Pat Mills (co-creator of Judge Dredd)he was only really creator due to being the 2000AD editor it's kinda like saying Roy thomas was co-creator on Wolverine due to being the editor of the Hulk at the timeand it's not like Mills didn't create anything noteworthy strips like ABC Warriors, Nemesis the Warlock,Slàine ect and that only focusing on his 2000AD work
>>147163578people love those characters tho?only people who genuinely do not get them hate them, like Garth Ennis.
>>147163749Ennis likes Superman, though. His dislike of Captain America is based on his bias of growing up with war comics with non-superpowered soldiers instead of superhero comics.
>>147162306I think socio-political aspect rounds it out very well, even if it's not exactly on the pulse.
>>147158122It was okay.
>>147161639What’s a paradax
>>147164729This dude.
>>147158122no
>>147162306But British politics and culture is within the same sphere as US politics and culture. You must be an ESL.
>>147158122uh, sure
>>147165328not really
>>147159931>'s terrific, atmospheric inks over the less satisfying art of his early DC workMaybe it's the versions that are commercially available but I found the art to be probably the weakest part, especially in books 3 and 4. I found it less "atmospheric" and more muddled and incomprehensible. That's interesting that they were coming out concurrently with his early DC work, I hadn't realized that.
>>147164804Oh what’s his story?
>>147165328nigger, anglos are a blight on the world since the moment they set out from that fucking island
>>147167942
>>147167195That incomprehensibility is probably the shadows almost consuming the surroundings and characters, evoking a very oppressive atmosphere. Though I am seeing some of the copies online have that shitty, lossy quality to the art. Bummer.>>147167226A New York cabbie finds a supersuit that gives him the ability to phase through matter and becomes a celebrity superhero. Very short-lived. One of his stories is also a proto Morrison Doom Patrol. McCarthy would have been perfect for Morrison's Doom Patrol run, certainly a better fit than Richard Case.
