Was this the most embarrassing of the MCU killers
>>

yes

>make one bad movie
>give up
lol
>>
It's pretty funny that they had a whole-ass animated logo for a cinematic universe that exploded in the hangar. How many times did that "Dark Universe" graphic ever actually get used?
>>
That shit Mummy movie tanking saved us from Invisible Man with Johnny Depp and Bride of Frankenstein with Angela Jolie. Just let it sink in for a moment how shit they would've been.
>>
>>147160931
They tried to fix it by making the other entries actual horror movies with a low budget. Unfortunately, none of them are good either.
Now all they have is a theme park.

Having the audacity to proclaim yourself a "Universe" when you only had one movie ready to go is just insane to me. They should've just made Ahmanet the main character instead of Cruise.
>>
>>147162323
I thought that last Invisible Man movie wasn't bad. A better modern interpretation than Hollow Man at any rate.

Although the same director's releasing a Wolfman movie next week which critics are saying is pretty bad. Makes me wonder if it'll make people give pic-related a second try.
>>
>>147160931
Nah, this got the dignity of stopping at movie 1. The SSU managed to make 6 shitty films.
>>
>>147162332
She IS the titular Mummy, after all. Thinking about it it's kind of weird that the lead of the Dark Universe was Tom Cruise, who was NOT one of Universal's classic monsters and was never intended to become one.

It would be like if the MCU's main character was some unrelated figure who showed up in Iron Man 1 and merely reacted to everything Tony Stark did.
>>
>>147162349
the ssu had profitable movies though
>>
>>147162349
What makes the SSU worse is that everyone in charge think these movies are competent and "unfairly maligned" by critics.
>>
>>147160931
Dracula Untold wasn't that bad.
>>
>>147162339
I mistook this as the new Wolfman movie. Anthony Hopkins is like 100 now, can’t imagine him running around in a wolf costume at his age.
>>
>>147162413
Fun fact: It shares writers with Morbius.
>>
>>147162362
She's too powerful. Would be a one-sided affair if she fought a werewolf or fishman. Only Dracula could possibly stand a chance.
>>
>>147162451
Is Dracula even that powerful if you don't amp up the black magic angle ala Castlevania? I mean he gets taken out by an eccentric Dutch university professor, a cowboy and a couple of white collar yuppies.
>>
>>147162413
It was silly, but I am sad we won't see any more of Charles Dance as a hammy ancient vampire.
>>
>>147162273
The mummy was good but the backdoor pilot in the middle with Russell crowe was stupid
>>
>>147162332
I don't get how the stand alone ip's benefit from a 'universe' framework.
>>
>>147162468
I don't know but Mummy vs Dracula would be the sickest fight ever. I'd buy tickets to that
>>
>>147162339
>I thought that last Invisible Man movie wasn't bad
It's a great movie, too bad the chick is a scientologist
but then again, so is Tom Cruise
they should just make a Scientology Dark Universe, call Travolta to be Frankenstein's monster and call Aaron Kyro to direct
>>
>>147162740
Presumably they were thinking ahead to movies that had multiple monsters.
>>
>>147162468
He's pretty powerful, he's probably weaker than her but the caveat is he's unbound by any bullshit besides fucking dying. Mummy's schtick is you can always bind them by an artifact.
So if there WAS an Monster Mash crossover, I assume he's their heavy hitter that can somewhat fight the Mummy on equal terms but would eventually be overwhelmed because it's Bats vs the Desert but the other Monsters and Tom Cruise do the grunt work rebinding her. Also Tywin is probably the Loki.
>>147162740
Because then every movie in the universe has a potential piggyback. Most Marvel movies are exactly this, they COULD be standalones outside the crossovers but you get to rope fanboys into watching all of them because it MIGHT matter in a crossover 2 years from now.
>>
>>147162468
He wasn't actually defeated by them, in a manner of speaking. They just fought the gypsies that were transporting him.
>>
>>147162896
Wonder if they would have included Erik in the "monster" group. While lumped together, their existence outside is because of looks-based discrimination instead of being actually undead/cursed etc. Maybe split the difference and have the Phantom be a ghost who was known as the Phantom even before he died.
>>
>>147163406
*his existence
Originally I had more than one listed, but determined that one was already decided and I don't see how the other would work.
>>
>>147160931
I thought the only good one was Del Toro's fish man movie but that wasn't even a part of this. They turned him down so he made his own fish guy fucker movie with blackjack and hookers and it was more of a success than any of this slop. There's probably some fuming execs out there.
>>
>>147160931
>in a world where
>we couldn't find four guys under 60 who wanted to make our movies

>>147162247
no they made a dracula movie too

>>147162273
it's a shame they made such terrible decisions because Universal's monster movies go back to the very start of Hollywood movies, it's a great premise to revisit and there's a real opportunity to get creative filmmakers to do more with effects to really showcase the weirdness of these stories than at any other time in history

instead we get ego actors feeling entitled to another franchise, MBS's bum chum and the CGI equivalent of a guy in a monster suit shuffling onto the set while the camera is pointed elsewhere
>>
Universal
>Dracula Untold was more or less a superhero vampire story that they tacked extra stuff onto to try and make it the start of their Dark Universe and failed.
>Tried again with the Mummy.

Sony:
>Ghostbusters female reboot was meant to kickstart a franchise universe. They made the Ghost Corps department to faciliate this and allegedly needed the movie to make like a billion.
>Amazing Spider-Man was meant to be a universe, they set up all the villains gimmicks as just sitting in a room at Oscorp in 2. Sinister Six movie, Silver Sable, Black Cat were planned. In leaked emails they talked about Aunt May having a project. 2 didn't hit the right numbers and they cancelled.
>Tried again with Venom films, Morbius, Madame Webb but Kraven has halted this project for good.

Disney:
>Star Wars was meant to alternate between sequel and A Star Wars story film. But TLJ and Solo killed this plan. Obi Wan and Boba Fett movies were cancelled. Iger called it Star Wars fatigue. Mandalorian was helmed by Jon Favreau who did the Iron Man films and was built as a franchise spin off machine. All the old "A Star Wars story" movies were repurposed to be films.

WB:
>The Conjuring universe, with Nun and Annabelle films.
>DCEU, the execs wanted Man of Steel to do Avengers level numbers then panicked. They messed up Suicide Squad. They even tried to get Christian Bale as Batman to make the Nolan films the retroactive start. Snyder's vision was too divisive. Justice League flopped but then Aquaman and Wonder Woman both did respectible numbers, keeping the franchise going, both Flash and Black Adam were meant to be mini reboots.
>King Arthur Guy Ritchie movie was meant to kickstart a universe but the first movie flop.
>Godzilla MonsterVerse is still going just but has the problems of tonal inconsistency and bad characters.

Fox:
>MCU-ified their X-Men films. The later films were building up to villains like Mr Sinister before they flopped with Dark Phoenix and then Disney bought them
>>
>>147164182
There were like no actors under 35 that are big draws back then( still really aren’t, but PR teams convinced people to care about zendaya and Timothy Chalamet), this was a good set of actors to sell a universe, theoretically. I also think people were in denial about how old they had gotten
>>
>>147164291
>Godzilla MonsterVerse is still going just but has the problems of tonal inconsistency and bad characters.

The only characters anybody actually cares about are the monsters themselves, and I don't really have any complaint about them. Godzilla and Kong are handled fine, Mothra is great in her two appearances, Rodan and Ghidorah were cool, I even liked the MUTOs.
>>
>>147160931
I played the mummy metroidvania tie-in and it was solid enough, too short though
>>
>>147160931
Wait.. isn't this /tv/ ? Anyways someone post cropped mummy porn
>>
>>147164291
>repurposed to be films.
to be Disney+ shows
>>
>>147164460
>Only characters anyone cares about
Then can we just fucking stop with them. Serazawa was the perfect Human character in these movies after Cranston but they fucked that because his whole character is stare in awe, say how cool they are, unobtrusively progress the plot. Stop wasting my time with unfunny podcast guy and gay hippy, I don't care about the scientist chick and her deaf daughter who's apparently a thing. Kurt Russel was okay and the Giraffe chick was hot but everyone else was so fucking annoying in the tv show and I don't fucking care the girlfriend you cheated on got eaten by Godzilla. GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY AND LET ME SEE THE MONSTERS!
>>
>>147162265
Once, twice if you count that it had its own trailer
>>
>>147162362
Spoilers

Cruise gets mummy powers
>>
>>147162413
Dracula Untold was to the Dark Universe what Green Lantern was to the DCEU
>>
>>147162932
They killed him when he was incapacitated, they didn't straight up beat him like Hugh Jackman or a Belmont would
>>
>>147164336
I'm so very upset whenever somebody wheels out Brad Pitt as a romantic lead

some guys who can't act at the start get time to learn and go on to great things (Tom Hanks)

some guys who can't act at the start get time to learn and keep on alternating between eating while reading cue cards and slapping themselves in the head with a gun while crying, the two methods of acting natural
>>
>>147165183
Huh? Pitt can act, everyone calls him a character actor in a leading man's body
>>
>>147160931
>Cruise didn't get to bang the mummy
0/10 fuck that dogshit movie
>>
>>147165409
You'd have to slap Xenu's dick out of his mouth first, and I don't think you've got the thetan level to pull that off. Literally.
>>
>>147162339
>>147162774
Fuck you, it was absolutely awful.
A boring piece of Blumhouse slop with no redeeming qualities.
