Just started Jack Kirby's run on DC from Jimmy Olsen #133 and currently at the 1st issue of The New Gods (1971). I'm not into comic books so all the story surrounding this series, Kirby's reputation and transfer to DC, etc. were all brand new to me (and honestly, I don't have much to comment as I'm surely missing the details). I was recommended this series because of its beautiful panels and creativity, and so far I can see it. Was shocked to learn plenty of relevant DC figures, and Darkseid of all characters, came from a Jimmy Olsen spinoff, and from a series that seems so detached from the current DC I hear of. My main praise of the series, from the little I've read, is how effortlessly it transitions from what looks like an average "criminal using funny pistols to rob the bank" type of story into a cosmic battle, specially by the visuals. My favorite part so far is Superman contemplating going to "superworld" (which I assume is New Genesis?) so he doesn't feel lonely anymore, only for him to be reminded of his sense of duty, all portrayed so swiftly into few panels. Only problem is that I haven't found good scans, but I'll stick to what I have anyways.

>>147162059He doesn't really do much in his early appearances in Jimmy's comics so I assume he was included to better tie Superman into the story. That, or Kirby had a clear idea of who Darkseid would later become, and the inclusion was thematically deliberate (specially with his first subordinate being the news' chief).
okay...
