It's looking more likely that Nelvana will be shut down in a few monthsHow does this make you feel?
Saddened (the internet will always be a mistake for animation)
>>147172124This is still around?
>>147172177The problem isn't the internet, but the lack of infrastructure and distribution networks.
>>147172124I thought it died years ago. There have been a lot less quickly churned out Canadian flash cartoons in recent years.
>>147172223Probably not in the form you remember anymore
>>147172124Didn't all kids channels that regularly showed Canadian cartoons all die a few years ago?
>>147172124Haven't seen anything they've made since Beetlejuice.
>>147172124the raccoons was one of their best cartoons, along with the care bears of that time period. their later stuff was just crap
>>147172883Nelvana never worked on the Raccoons. It was actually two other Canadian animation studios: Atkinson Film-Arts (Season 1) and Hinton Animation Studios (Seasons 2-5).
>>147172925I thought Nelvana had a part in this also... weird
Sidekick in Italy was very popular in elementary school along with Total drama, even the K2 youtube channel, the channel where Sidekick was airing here, had a background image of Sidekick (When background images on youtube channels were still a thing). It was an important part of my childhood and it still one of my favorite cartoon.I wish it would be more serious with the story since it had a good worldbuilding but it was aimed at kids so whatever.I will miss Nelvana.
I'm pretty mixed on it. Growing up in Canada, their stuff in the 90s to 2000s basically defined my childhood. Scrolling through a list of Canadian cartoons sends a shockwave of nostalgia through my stomach, and no matter what the quality is now, I feel sort of blessed to have had the experience I did with a lot of these cartoons. ...but after the 2000s literally everything this company and Canada in general has put out is just incomparable dog shit, so it's less like seeing an old friend die, and more like seeing a sick dog getting put down. Good riddance.
>>147172815YTV is still around, Family Channel is still around, Teletoon got rebranded as Cartoon Network up here.
>>147172124Is this why I'm seeing Canadian voice actors more.
>>147174033You are? Where?
>>147172124Bets on who buys the catalog of shows? I can see Disney snatching Droids and Ewoks, Nick claiming full rights to FOP and Backyardigans... but what other players are there? WildBrain?
>>147172124their logo looks like a european candy bar.
>>147174715Majority of it is already tossed around all the free to watch streaming services anyway. Pluto, Tubi, Freevee, and Roku kids channels are majority Nelvana crap with some other stuff kind of added in there.
>>147174980But that's licensed, not full ownership.
>>147172124they still exist? what about DiC ?
>>147172124Surprised that Nelvana exists in the 21st century.
>>147174715Corus Entertainment will likely retain the catalog until they themselves shut down. They'll probably sell to Rogers or Bell or Quebecor. Anyone but Americans in this current geopolitical climate.
>>147175035WB owns it
>>147175054what do they do now? what have they made recently
>>147175082lots of peanuts stuff for apple tv.
>>147172124Wtf? Source?
>>147172124I thought Nelvana went out of business decades ago and that was how Genddy managed to rip them off for his shitty SW show
>>147172284Basically the world was not ready for the internet. >>147172448Man Canadian cartoons used to have their own identity but then globalism happened.
>>147174715CN will take more control over Total Drama, maybe even outright buy Fresh Tv.
>>147175045i'm sure it'll be Rogers or Quebecor that buy Corus. Probably Rogers i reckon but who knows.
>>147175455
>>147175455Source: Kids do not watch cartoons.
>>147175455>>147175710>>147175801Just look up any news article on Corus Entertainment, their parent company, about how much debt they're in.>https://www.wealthprofessional.ca/news/industry-news/corus-entertainment-sees-profit-drop-to-119m/388035>https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-corus-paid-bonuses-to-executives-this-year-as-its-shares-collapsed/Then look up articles about how Nelvana has scraped development and how they're heads are jumping ship.>https://www.awn.com/news/corus-pauses-development-nelvana-vp-athena-georgaklis-exits>https://kidscreen.com/2025/01/16/people-moves-january-16-2025/Then connect the dots.
>>147172124Wonder if they will auction off a bunch of their old stuff.
>>147175499No world would ever be ready for the internet, but it would have helped to stop corporations and monopolists from taking over it.
>>147174680I've been seeing a few pop up in games and cartoons like Ian James Corlett being in FF7 Rebirth
>>147175847Like some concept art for that stillborn Doctor Who cartoon of theirs?
>>147175054I fucking hate that these fucks have a bunch of decent Cinar cartoons they're just sitting on, can't even stream them.
>>147175832Exactly. All kids Entertainment that existed a decade ago is in trouble because kids would rather watch India slop and bad influencers on YouTube. This form of entertainment is dead and never, ever coming back.
vague memories of stuff on pbs. the world you grew up is gone, etc.
>>147176493I mean, Nelvana could've pivoted to making cartoons for teens and adults. They've done it before
>>147176549Still the best thing they ever produced
